Neabsco News
2025-26 School Year
August 28, 2025
News from the Principal 🤩
Neabsco Families,
A special congratulations goes out to our 5th Grade House Leaders chosen this year who will serve as role models for their peers by leading with responsibility, Star pride, and leadership. While our 5th graders have played an important role in setting the tone, I want to reassure every student and family that leadership at Neabsco is not limited to one grade or one position. Every child has the opportunity to lead whether through House events, classroom responsibilities, school projects, or student voice opportunities. At Neabsco, we believe that leadership is not a title, but a habit of the mind, and we are committed to empowering all of our students to discover their strengths and shine. The Leader in Me curriculum will continue help our students think as leaders and grow through challenges.
As we celebrate this year’s winners, we also look forward to the many leadership opportunities ahead. From House celebrations and classroom projects to family engagement events, tutoring and after school activities, there will always be ways for every Neabsco STAR to rise, lead, and make a difference in themselves and school community. I have provided this year's continuous improvement information so you are aware that we are focusing on making sure all students achieve and grow in all areas.
Families, enjoy the four day weekend. There is no school tomorrow, August 29 and no school on Monday, September 1. We will look forward to seeing all stars back on Tuesday, September 2nd!
Thank you for supporting our vision of building a community where every student is a leader, every day. We are so proud of our STARS and can’t wait to see how they continue to grow and shine in the year ahead!

Kiss and Ride
The Dos and Don'ts of Kiss and Ride
As teachers and parents/guardians we should all have the same goals in mind when it comes to Kiss and Ride, "Getting your children out of the vehicle in a safe and timely manner." Here are some dos and don'ts to remember while you are in line each morning:
DO:
- do, watch and wait to be directed by the staff on duty as you proceed through the line
- do, wait for an adult on duty to open doors and let students out of the vehicle
- do, have your student ready to exit the vehicle when they reach the drop off point
- do, continue through the parking lot once your child has exited the vehicle
DO NOT:
- do not exit your vehicle while in the kiss and ride line
- do not sit in the line to watch your child walk to the door (this impedes the traffic flow)
Q: What if I want to help my child put on their backpack before they walk away?
A: Please park your vehicle in a parking spot if you need to assist your child with their personal belongings.
Q: What if I decide to walk my child into the building when I am in the Kiss and Ride line?
A: Please exit the Kiss and Ride line and park your vehicle when you want to walk your child to the front entrance.
Q: What if my child needs special assistance from a Teaching Assistant each morning?
A: Please wait to be directed and pull to the front of the line so as not to block the flow of traffic
Q: What if my child is refusing to exit the vehicle?
A: Please wait to be directed and pull up your vehicle to the front of the line so as not to block the flow of traffic.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN KEEPING ALL OUR STUDENTS SAFE!

🐏 Fluffiest Sheep Ever 🐑
What would happen if you never had your hair cut? A hiker in Australia found a wild sheep that had grown so much extra wool, he became the size of a refrigerator. So champion sheep shearer Ian Elkins stepped in and sheared (cut off) all 89 pounds of the wool. The sheep, now named Chris, weighs half as much as before the haircut!
Wee ones: We like to think of sheep as white and fluffy. Find 4 white things in your room, and point to the biggest one.
Little kids: If your hair is 10 inches long and you cut off 4 inches, what numbers do you say to count down to the new length? Bonus: If you can make 20 sweaters from all that wool and you’ve knitted all but 1 of them, how many have you already knitted?
Big kids: If Ian started shearing at 3:08 pm and took 45 minutes, when did he finish? Bonus: If after losing the 89 pounds of wool Chris weighed just half as much, how much did he weigh with the wool?
The sky’s the limit: If Chris started with 3 pounds of wool at the end of March, and each month the weight of the wool doubled, in what month would he have reached 89 pounds of wool?
Parent Liaison
It's been another exciting week of school! From Kindergarten to 5th grade your students are settling into their new routines! Please make sure to stay connected with your teachers. A successful school year for your student begins with not only being at school everyday, well-rested and ready to learn, but also knowing that you as their parents/guardians are involved and communicating with their teachers.
I am excited to step into my role as the NEW Parent Liaison at Neabsco Elementary this year! Getting to meet our families and build connections to make this a successful year for all our students.
You can reach out to me directly if you need help navigating through our school resources. ParentVue is a good place to start for contact information for your students' teachers. For the Login access click on the following link, ParentVUE.

Growing Readers
We had a wonderful first few weeks of school. As we begin this school year, your partnership is more important than ever.
As a Title 1 funded school we are buzzing with energy and eagerness as we strengthen students’ reading skills through the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) by embracing the science of reading and building strong foundational skills.
One of the many ways you can support your scholar is to start with good routines by having a set time and place for them to read each night. In the upcoming weeks your student will participate in various task assessments such as the VALLS and the HMH Growth assessment. These targeted assessments are utilized to gain powerful insight into student knowledge, ensuring every learner gets the support they need to thrive. Be on the lookout for more information to come. Here are the dates for the task assessments:
- VALLSS (all grades) September 2nd - September 26th
- HMH (2nd - 5th grade) September 2nd - September 5th
As a reminder, our Annual Title 1 Family Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, 2025, 5:30pm at our Back-to-School Night. We look forward to seeing you there.
Let’s celebrate every step forward this year!

The Zones of Regulation 🔵🟢🟡🔴
Hello Families,
At Neabsco, students are learning to identify and manage their emotions through the Zones of Regulation curriculum. This program teaches self-regulation—skills like self-control and impulse management—which are essential for learning and life.
The Zones are:
Blue: tired, sad, or bored
Green: calm, happy, ready to learn
Yellow: excited, anxious, silly, or frustrated
Red: intense emotions like anger or panic
Students learn that all Zones are normal and expected. They practice recognizing their emotions, understanding what Zone fits a situation, and using tools to shift Zones when needed.
You can support this at home by using neutral language, like:
“You seem in the Blue Zone—what’s your plan to get to Green?”
“The Yellow Zone is great for playtime, but what Zone fits dinner time?”
“You’re in the Red Zone—do you need help calming down?”
Thanks for partnering with us to support your Star's emotional growth!
