A Note from Mrs Voegeli

This year will begin like no other, but I truly believe it is in the best interest of students to start slowly with small class sizes. Our number one priority is to keep the students and staff safe and secure this fall. We will put many safety measures in place and ensure appropriate precautions are taken. Please be patient with us and know that there are many changes for students, families, and staff.

Hybrid learning:

⩥ Students with last names starting with A-M come to school on Monday and Thursday.

⩥ Students with last names starting with N-Z come to school on Tuesday and Friday. Some adjustments were made in this to equal the class sizes. Starting September 2, staff will have office hours on Wednesdays to support students and families. Appointments can be made according to this schedule:

• First four hours (A-G, H-M, N-S, and T-Z)
• 8:00-9:00, 9:00-10:00, 10:00-11:00, 11:00-12:00

⩥ The Hybrid model will be in place for a minimum of 2 weeks, then the superintendent and the board will decide what the next steps will be.

⩥ Students and staff will be required to wear a mask all day.

Virtual Learning:

⩥ All instruction is delivered online.

⩥ The students do not come to the building at any time for instruction.

⩥ Students will be required to log in and receive live instruction

⩥ Students are provided with technology and other curricular materials.

⩥ Attendance will be taken each day.

⩥ Virtual learning is a 9 week commitment. You must also have internet.

⩥ A virtual teacher will be assigned to support your child’s learning.

What precautions will be taken this year?

⩥ Masks will be worn by students and staff.

⩥ Classrooms will have desks spread apart.

⩥ Recesses will be split between 2 playgrounds and students will stay with their own class/cohort. Each class will have its own equipment.

⩥ Sanitizing will occur frequently.

⩥ Custodial staff will systematically clean door handles and other high traffic areas.

⩥ Water fountains will be covered. Students may bring water bottles.

⩥ The building will be a closed campus. Visitors will not be allowed in the building. Parents picking students up early can ring the bell and we will escort their child to the door.

⩥ If you need to drop something off for your child, there will be a desk in the vestibule for you to place the item.

⩥ Unfortunately, at this time, parents will not be able to visit the classrooms or have lunch with their child.

⩥ All teachers will have sanitizing spray to clean areas.

⩥ Students experiencing Covid symptoms will go to a Caring room. Students that have COVID symptoms will be sent home.

During the first four days of Hybrid learning, this will be morning procedures:

All teachers will be outside at 8:05.

Students in grades 3 and 4 will go to the North Playground or inside for breakfast.

Students in grades 1 and 2 will line up on the front lines or inside for breakfast.

Kindergarten teachers will be at their classroom doors.

Fifth grade will be on the sidewalk near the kindergarten rooms. Teachers will direct them to the back playground.

After the first 4 days, this is the protocol.

⩥ Breakfast students will eat in the lunchroom. Other students will stay out front until 8:15 and then proceed to these locations.

⩥ Grades 2,3,4 will line up in the morning on the north playground before school.

⩥ Grades. K, 1, 5 will line up on the south playground before school. They will enter through the building and walk to the playground.

⩥ Kindergarten will exit from their classroom doors. First grade will exit from door 4 and line up on lines in front of the building. Second and fifth grade will exit from door 1. Second will line up on the front lines. Third and fourth grade will exit from the north playground.

Thank you for your patience as we work together to keep everyone safe.

Visitor Management System

Dear Parents/Guardians of Loess Hills Elementary Students:

Loess Hills Elementary is pleased to announce that we will begin using a computerized visitor management system for the upcoming school year. We believe the implementation of this new technology will benefit you, your child, and this school by better allowing us to track visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools, therefore providing a safer environment for everyone. To ensure every visitor checks in using the new computerized system, you must enter the building through the main entrance.

The visitor management system is a computerized security program that offers many features to protect your child from outside threats. Let's review the basic functions of the system. First, any visitor entering Loess Hills Elementary will be required to provide a state-issued photo ID. If you do not have a state-issued photo ID, you may contact the school in advance of your visit to inquire about other acceptable forms of identification.

Once the ID is presented, a school representative will scan this ID using the latest in ID scanning technology. The system instantly captures the name, photo, and birth date of the visitor. When this successfully occurs, the software compares the identity of the visitor with the national sex offender registry. If a positive match occurs, school personnel will be immediately and discreetly alerted. Individuals with a sex offense on record will not be permitted to enter the building.

It is important to note that the computerized visitor management system only scans the visitor's name, date of birth, and photo for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders. Additional visitor data from the driver's license is not gathered, nor is the system connected to any other system such as the Department of Motor Vehicles. Therefore, any other information on the ID is not scanned by the system and is not accessible to any of the users.

Once an entry is approved, the visitor will be issued a badge that identifies him/her as a visitor. The badge includes the date and the purpose of the visit. All staff members are trained to recognize visitor badges. Collectively, everyone in the building will be working together to ensure all visitors have a badge on and have gone through the appropriate check-in process at the main entrance.

As you leave our facility, please pass through the main office to return your badge so we can scan you out of the system.

The safety of our students is our highest priority, and the computerized visitor management system enhances the safety practices at Loess Hills Elementary. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions, please call our office at 712-279-6843.

Sincerely,

Tami Voegeli

Communication and Preparedness

Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.

Focus 2022 Strategic Plan

The Sioux City Community School District Board of Directors spent time developing, with the input of multiple stakeholder groups, the “Definition of the Well-Educated Student.” The definition is the foundation for the Focus 2022 Strategic Plan. The definition identifies what students within the educational system will be able to do upon graduating from our district. Learn about the five goal areas of the strategic plan.
