Coupeville Schools are Strong! Coupeville Schools are Strong!

Dear Coupeville School District Families,

Research from the University of Oklahoma's Hope Research Center shows that hope is a powerful predictor of success - even more significant than IQ, GPA, or standardized test scores. Hope isn't just optimism; it's the belief that we can find pathways forward and have the agency to pursue them.

In our schools, we actively cultivate hope through:

  • Creating supportive relationships between staff and students
  • Setting achievable goals while providing tools to reach them
  • Teaching problem-solving strategies when obstacles arise
  • Celebrating diverse perspectives that enrich our learning community

The science is clear: when students feel supported and valued, their hope increases, leading to better academic performance, emotional resilience, and life satisfaction. Our commitment to acceptance and inclusion isn't just about being kind - it's about creating the conditions where hope can flourish.

Every day, I witness acts of kindness, support, and understanding in our hallways and classrooms. Our counselors, teachers, and staff continue providing the stable, nurturing environment that research shows builds hope and resilience in students.

Moving forward, we will continue strengthening our support systems by:

  • Expanding counseling resources. Please see opportunities in this newsletter.
  • Enhancing staff training in trauma-informed practices. We are looking at curriculums that can support teachers in teaching lessons throughout the year.
  • Building stronger community partnerships. We value our Coupeville community and continue to welcome partnerships of support.
  • Reinforcing positive behavior support systems. Our schools have been launching their products and working to provide lessons that help build understanding of expectations.

Hope thrives in communities that embrace all members, celebrate differences, and support each other through challenges. That's the Coupeville way. Thank you for your continued support!

Together in hope,

Shannon Leatherwood, Superintendent

Skills USA Spotlight Skills USA Spotlight

Last week Everett Community College hosted the SkillsUSA Welding Sculpture, Welding Fabrication, and Technical Welding competitions, and our students delivered impressive performances! Delanie Lewis competed in Welding Sculpture with her creative project, the Nutty Giraffe. She completed an interview, presented her sculpture, and took a written knowledge test, earning 12th place overall.

Landon Roberts, Jesus Madrigal, and Danica Strong took on Welding Fabrication, where they followed blueprints to measure, cut, fit, and weld materials. Their project was a jet stove constructed from provided stock materials, and the team placed 5th overall. Kassidy Upchurch participated in Technical Welding, demonstrating her expertise in Oxy-Fuel Cutting, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, and blueprint-based project construction, finishing 9th overall.

Students also showcased their talents at the Pastry and Baking Arts competition at Arlington High School. Marz Halstead and Tenley Stuurmans crafted a delicious lineup, including a braided bread roll, two types of yeast rolls, a cherry pie, chocolate chip cookies, and a decorated cake. In a highly competitive field, Tenley placed 9th and Marz placed 11th, with less than 70 points separating 1st and 9th place.

Excellent work by all of our contestants — they represented Coupeville with skill and creativity!
