Principals' Message
Pleasant Valley Middle School Families,
It was a great week to be a Patriot! Students were hard at work, taking tests, improving their vocabulary and having a little bit of fun as well. We ended this week with a Fun Run in 5th grade to support our school via our PTA. In addition, we hosted our first PBIS Patriot Store of the year, ensuring that we are rewarding our students for positive expectations of being Safe, Respectful and Responsible. Finally, we hosted our School Board for a tour of PVM on Friday morning. It was fantastic having our educational partners at school seeing what your students have been accomplishing this year. A huge shout out goes to our teachers, students and our ASB team for their warm welcome and encouragement to our guests. Thank you families for being our partners in learning. We look forward to another great week with your students here at PVM!
Austin Brothers (Principal)
Erin Thompson (Assistant Principal)
Aerosols and perfumes at school
This is just a reminder that due to staff and student allergies and sensitivities, we ask that students and staff do not wear perfumes/colognes or heavily scented products to school. Also, any aerosol sprays should be kept at home, including body sprays, deodorant, hairspray etc. These items can adversely affect our students and staff with asthma and chemical/scent allergies and sensitivities.
We thank you for your consideration.
Picture day, Thurs., Sept. 26th
Picture day is coming up this Thursday, September 26th. Students will need to either bring their picture packet with payment on that morning, or parents may order online though the link below. Please do not send photo packets in early, just have students bring them to school on the 26th. Scans of the picture packet are attached below, if you wish to download them to better view the packet options, or you may follow the link to view online. The password to enter the online order site is CHEESE . The link below will expire 2-3 days after picture day.
Click to navigate to Bell Studios to view purchase options and purchase pictures online.
If your student is not able to be at school during our photography session, or you would like to request retakes after receiving your photos, we will have retakes at the end of October. The student must return all photos with the photo packet on retake day in order to get retakes.
Meal benefit expiration
Please be aware that free and reduced-price meal benefits (now known as the Child Nutrition Eligibility & Education Benefit Application) will expire on Wednesday, Oct. 9, for students who have not renewed their application from last year. Families must apply for meal benefits each year to continue receiving lunch and breakfast at a reduced rate, or to maintain access to free or reduced activity fees with the added completion of a consent to share form. Only one application is required for each family, and the information is always confidential.
You can reapply for meal benefits by:
The importance of regular attendance
The importance of regular attendance
Thank you for working to maintain your child’s attendance. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to student learning and success. The skills that students learn in primary school will help them be successful in middle and high school. A student’s attendance often can predict whether they are likely to graduate high school on time. Read more.

Upcoming testing opportunities - PSAT and World Language Testing
Students can register for standardized tests that are used for credits, college/university admissions and more. Upcoming testing opportunities include the SAT on Oct. 5, PSAT/NMSQT on Oct. 26 and World Language Testing on Oct. 26. Learn more.
Grade 8 may take the PSAT and World Language tests.
Required yearly update of student health/contact info - Skyward 2025 Update
Each year families are required to complete forms to update student health, contact, emergency contact and other information. These forms are online in Skyward. It is vital for student safety that we have complete, up-to-date health and contact information. Health information is NOT pulled forward each year and must be updated EVERY YEAR by a parent/guardian. This update is how our nurses will know if your student has a life threatening condition, allergies etc. Please review contact information and make sure phone numbers, address, emergency contacts are up to date.
- You will find the 2025 Update at the top of your Skyward Family Access account when you log in to Skyward.
- To log in to your Battle Ground Skyward Family Access account you may find the log in page link at the top of the BGPS district website, or follow this link: SKYWARD LOG IN . You may download instructions below on how to log in to Skyward.
- click “2024-25 annual student update” (do not select new student online enrollment) on the navigation bar in the left column of the webpage. See instructions.
- Please log in and update each of your student's information as soon as possible. If you have difficulties logging in, contact the school office for assistance, or stop by the office and we will help you log in on a school Chromebook. 360-885-5500
- If you would like to receive text messages, be sure to enter your cell number when you complete the update. You will see three fields for phone numbers. In the second phone field, choose "cell" from the dropdown menu, and enter your cellphone number.
- Students will bring home a "Family Emergency Plan" form to fill out and return to teachers. This form is strictly for teacher safety binders, so teachers/staff are aware of the plan for your student should we have an unexpected or emergency early release from school (power outage, gas leak etc). These paper forms DO NOT UPDATE SKYWARD ELECTRONIC RECORDS. Skyward records may only be updated online. Please include any person who is authorized to pick up your child from school if there is an emergency release, including all parents, on this form. We will require photo ID to verify identity before releasing the student. As non-office staff may be helping release students, even parents who are known to school office staff should be prepared to show photo ID upon request. Your child's safety is our top priority.
You will also find other forms, such as opt-outs for sexual health curriculum, and opt-in for busing etc under the district forms in your Skyward account.

Notes from the Nurse
Vaccination updates. Life threatening medical condition/allergy.
Hello PVM families!
Nurses are reviewing student vaccination records and will be sending out letters to families who have students out of compliance with vaccination requirements. Students entering the 7th grade are due for a TDaP booster vaccination. If your child has had updated vaccinations recently, please be sure to get record of the vaccination(s) to our nurses so we may update them in Skyward. Nurses will notify affected families about upcoming exclusion dates, if necessary.
WA immunization requirements
Life threatening health condition/allergy
If your student has a life threatening medical condition/allergy, we must have updated health information each year as well as medication at school forms for any rescue medications that need to be kept at the nurse's office at school. Parents and nurses work together to create an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for what to do for your child in the case of a medical emergency. Please contact our nurses if your student has a life threatening medical condition/allergy and you have not already alerted the school and had an EAP created. Students and parents will need to meet with nurses before a student may self-carry any rescue medications.

Updating contact and health information
Parents/guardians please make sure you are updating the School Health Form in Skyward each year so that we have correct and current information regarding your child/ren (complete the "Update" in Skyward Family Access. Update opens August 1st each year to update school forms.). Skyward does not pull information forward each school year. There are many School Health Forms that have not been updated for 2-4 years. We need current information and this is how we most often know if your child has a Life threatening health condition. We want to keep your child/ren safe while at school and we can't do our job if we do not have correct and updated information.
Thank you for your time in this important matter.
From your School Nurse Janel Salisbury, BSN, RN & Building Nurse Diane Davis, LPN

S.O.S - Signs of Suicide program
During the month of September, 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be taught Signs of Suicide. This year school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.
SOS has been used by thousands of schools for over 20 years. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students’ self-reported suicide attempts.
Through the program, students learn:
that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
who they can turn to at school for help
Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening form. This form cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should seek help from a mental health professional.
At the end of class, students will complete an exit slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk.
We encourage you to visit www.mindwise.org/parents for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.
If you have any questions that the website did not answer please feel free to contact Mrs. Friesen.

Cross country meet dates
Cross country will be having meets on the following dates, all starting at 4:15 pm. Students will be transported to meets, but must have their own ride home from the meet. There is a long break between when school lets out at 2:40 and when the meet begins at 4:15, so it will be good for students to bring a snack or small meal with them for after school, as well as a water bottle.
Student supervision is not provided after meets end, so it is important that students are picked up promptly, right at the end of the meet. Consistent late pick up from practices or meets may result in the student being unable to participate in meets, and being required to end practices in time to ride the primary bus home.

New safety protocols
This year, Battle Ground Public Schools joins most Southwest Washington schools and districts in using the Standard Response Protocol for emergencies. Depending on the situation, a school will be placed in a hold, secure, lockdown, evacuation or shelter. See what these terms mean. This common language helps schools, first responders and the community communicate clearly and effectively to reduce misunderstandings in emergency situations.
