From the Desk of Mrs. Stariha
Cooper Families,
The cooler weather is on its way. This means the beautiful color palette of our surroundings will slowly become adorned by a glistening white wonderland. We will make it a priority to get our students outdoors for recess each day. Please prepare your student with weather appropriate attire. This includes layers for both an indoor and outdoor school day and gear to play outside comfortably. Your student will need a winter jacket, snow pants, warm mittens, a hat, boots and an extra pair of socks. Label your child's items in the event they end up in our Lost and Found. This will assist our school team in getting the items back to the student. Our Lost and Found area has filled up. If your child is missing something, contact your child's teacher or our office.
Also, we have had quite a few students that are staying after school on the playground/on school grounds after the end of the day. We do not have supervision for students outside of the After School Program, so if your child is at Cooper after 3:30, we need an adult to be with them. If you would like information on enrolling your student into the After School Program, please feel free to contact our front office.

Gratitude
What does it mean to raise a grateful child? Developmental scientist and psychologist Andrea Hussong from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says it’s a lot more than teaching your child about basic manners. In fact, it’s a lot deeper than that and parents play a crucial role in modeling gratitude, how they create opportunities for children to experience gratefulness, and even talking to their children about it.
After studying parents and children, she recognized components of gratitude: what we notice, how we think or feel about it, what we do and how we enact grateful behaviors.
“One of the big things that gratitude does that I think is so important for kids is it helps us find people in our environment that care about us.” Hussong says. “It strengthens our relationship with them, and it makes that support network surround us with a little more care. And we know social support is so important, particularly now, when we're dealing with these pandemics of loneliness and isolation. We really need that.”
In this episode of the EdCast, Hussong shares strategies that can help your child develop a deeper understanding of this vital virtue, how you can foster it in the young hearts and minds of your children, and the way to pivot as your child becomes a teenager. She also addresses the potential impact of gratitude on mental health. Click on the link below to listen to this EdCast episode.
