What We Are Learning in 5th Grade!
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social studies students are learning about the early settlers and how difficult it was to settle in the Americas. The early settlers needed to learn new ways of getting food and how to make decisions, among many other things.
LANGUAGE ARTS
MATH
In math we are currently working on division. Throughout November, we will move into number theory and end the month starting fractions!
HEALTH/PHY.ED
In PE, 5th graders learned how to play Capture the Flag. This game allows students to improve their teamwork and strategizing skills. We also just began a new unit called Homer Dome. This is a fun game with a twist on kick ball. One of the biggest changes in the game is that before each player can score, they must run the bases again, which in this game we call 'doing our homework.' Many students love the extra cardio aspect that this game provides.
We will start health class at the beginning of Quarter 2. We will start learning about decision making and peer pressure. As 5th graders are working on their own independence and responsibilities, this lesson not only covers our standards, but includes great life skills as well.
MUSIC/BAND/ORCHESTRA
The 5-8th grade bands will perform their concert on November 21st. The 5th – 8th grade orchestras will perform their first concert of the year on November 26th at 6:00 p.m.
MEDIA ARTS
We have successfully completed our unit on advertisements! Students explored various types of advertisements and how they are designed to persuade audiences. They then created their own product and developed an advertisement for it. Next, we are moving on to stop motion animation. We have discussed and watched clips from Shaun the Sheep, The Missing Link, and The Boxtrolls. For our stop motion project, students will select a quote that they will animate using a self-portrait!
REMINDERS
TABLETS: PLEASE have your child plug in their tablet every single night. We use them every day and need them to be fully charged. Thanks for helping with this!
WEATHER: We've reached the time of year in southwest Minnesota where we have glimpses of multiple seasons throughout the day. It starts chilly (fall), gets a little warmer (spring), and by afternoon we might be hot and sweaty again (summer)! Thankfully we haven't seen much glimpse of the W word yet, but it's bound to show its face soon. Because of the variations, we've seen lots of little ones very cold in the mornings in t-shirts and shorts. Please remind your child to dress in layers during the season. We do go outside during the morning/early afternoon and we'd rather have them warm and cozy and able to shed some layers, rather than cold and miserable.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS: It is much darker in the mornings--we ask that you please encourage safety with our walking/biking students and those waiting for the bus. Daylight savings time ends on November 3rd--we "fall back" so be sure to enjoy that extra hour!
