Bronco Families,

Welcome back from winter break! We were all so excited to see all the students enter the halls after being away for a couple weeks. Please see below for all the new happenings at PHS.

As we return and get back into the swing of things, we want to remind everyone about the importance of attendance. We have spoken with all of the students here and presented our attendance policy reminders and a few tweaks we have made to ensure that students are getting into class! We need your help with this as well, please call our office whenever your student is out so we can correctly mark their attendance.

This newsletter also contains information on athletics, fundraisers, the upcoming play and first looks at some important Senior information!

It's another great year to be Bronco Nation!

JANUARY SCHEDULE

The January calendar is below. Please note that this month is the final stretch for Semester 1, FINALS will begin at the end of January. Please reach out to teachers if you have any questions about where your student currently sits in their Semester 1 class and how you can ensure they finish strong! The daily finals schedule will be sent out as we get closer.

ATTENDANCE

Parkrose High School is committed to attendance both to school and in class. In the spirit of the new year, we have made every effort to ensure that students understand the importance of being in class on time and our policy around attendance.

Please help us by calling 503.408.2689 or emailing Tiana Davis (attendance secretary) at tiana_davis@parkrose.k12.or.us if your student is going to be late, leave early or miss all or any part of the school day.

Semester 1 Finals

Please see the below file for our Semester 1 Finals Schedule.

Please note that start and end times are different from a normal school day. We will have delayed pick up in the mornings for any school bus riders. Those new times will be posted in the school halls for students to check out. Afternoon school bus will be at the normal time.

** Special Request from the Pop Can Drive team **

We are seeking someone willing to help on site for the Monthly Pop Can Drive for Feb 4, March 4, and April 1 of 2023. The event runs from 9am-1pm on the dates listed above. We need a volunteer who can tow the pop can trailer from the Parkrose District Office to the Middle School and back on those date. The volunteer will need a vehicle with a trailer hitch and experience towing a trailer. The pop can trailer is 24 ft. long. Typically a large SUV such as a Suburban or Tahoe OR a ½ ton pickup works best.

I will continue to coordinate volunteers, however, we need someone who will transport the trailer to and from the middle school on the day of the event and be on site at Parkrose Middle School during the 4 hour event. Pleases contact Patty Meighen at 503-333-3969.

Inclement Weather Messaging

Cold weather brings the possibility of school closures or delayed openings/early closings due to severe weather conditions. As we are still in these cold weather months we wanted to remind you of the ways in which you can receive information regarding inclement weather for Parkrose.

Decisions to close school or delay starting times are always difficult. Before a decision is made, school officials monitor weather conditions and personally check roads in higher elevation areas. If conditions are severe enough to threaten the safety of students traveling to and from school, a decision is made to close or delay school. This decision should be made by 6am.

Local TV & Radio Media Stations will also receive our FlashAlert Messaging

STAMP (Language) Testing

We will once again offer the STAMP exam this year. The next exam will take place on Friday, February 3rd. Watch for information about signing up to come out in a couple weeks.

SENIOR ACTIVITIES

Commencement and all awards ceremonies are positive traditions at Parkrose. It is my hope that all students will be able to participate in the activities surrounding graduation. The school does no sponsor, support or sanction a "skip day" or "sleep over" for seniors. We also do not sponsor or support senior trips promoted by companies that are not affiliated with the school. If you are unsure of a company's affiliation, please call the school.

The PHS Senior All Night Party Committee parents are dedicated to giving your senior a great night of fun. The party is memorable for students and parents. It takes many hours to attend to the necessary details and every volunteer is welcomed. Please see future newsletters for sign up details for the SANP for the Class of 2023.

Please see below for a first look at some important Senior dates:

GRADUATION

The Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2023 will be held at the Viking Pavilion at Portland State University on Thursday, June 15th beginning at 7pm.

Each senior will be given 10 tickets to invite family and friends of their choosing to this event. Tickets will only be given to students once they have completed graduation practice the day before. Additional tickets may be available depending on capacity. Requests for additional tickets can be made to Nicole Maynard by email at nicole_maynard@parkrose.k12.or.us. Please provide your student's name, ID number and how many ADDITIONAL tickets above the 10 you would hope to receive. A decision about additional tickets will be made in mid-May based on requests.

Shaver Crosswalk

Bronco Families we are asking for your help! Before and after school we do our best to get car riding students out quickly and keep traffic moving. We also always want to keep the safety of our students at the forefront, to do so we have a crossing guard at the crosswalk between the MS and HS. There have been times when the crossing guard has come close to getting hit by a car while trying to provide our students a safe place to cross the street. Please help us by watching for the crossing guard if you come to pick up your student!
