5th Grade Graduation

We are excited to welcome you into our school on Monday, June 1st from 1:30-2:00 for our 5th grade graduation at Meadowview! We wanted to send out a few important reminders for the event:

  • Each student is allowed to bring 2 guests to the graduation
  • Please do not arrive at school prior to 1:15pm. The seating will not be set up before then because students will be eating lunch in the graduation space, so there is no advantage to arriving before 1:15pm
  • We do not intend to check out siblings in other grades for the 5th grade graduation. Many classrooms have special alternate plans in the last 2 days that we don’t want to disrupt
  • The graduation is expected to be wrapped up between 2:00 and 2:05. We will then dismiss 5th graders to go get their backpacks and any items they need to bring home from the school year. If you will be bringing your 5th grader home after the event, you should arrange ahead of time to meet them in the cafeteria after they have their items.
  • If your 5th grader has a sibling who attends MVES, please plan to have them follow their regular dismissal routine.

SUN Bucks!

As we look towards the summer months it can sometimes be difficult for families to provide breakfast and lunch for their students. SUN Bucks can help provide groceries to families who qualify.

What are SUN Bucks? – SUN Bucks is a one-time per eligible school-aged child $120 payment to families to aid in buying groceries when school is out for the summer.

Who is eligible? – School-aged children between the ages of 7-17 whose households participate in public assistance programs (MFIP, SNAP, TANF, FDPIR, Foster Care) or children who have an approved application to receive free and reduced meals through the National School Lunch or Breakfast Program.

  • Families do not need to receive public assistance to obtain SUN Bucks IF they receive free/reduced lunch services.

  • If a family receives free/reduced lunch, but not public assistance they WILL need a copy of their approved free/reduced school breakfast/lunch application.

    • How do parents know if their child is eligible? – Take this quiz: https://www.summerebt.org/states/minnesota

  • How To Apply – Link to SUN Bucks Application: https://minnesota.summerebtapp.com/begin

Preventing the "summer slide" phenomenon!

Studies show that summer reading helps children maintain and even improve their literacy skills, preventing the “summer slide” phenomenon.

We would like to encourage this summer reading by hosting a schoolwide literacy initiative. Students K-4th can fill out a raffle ticket after each book they read. When they return in the fall, they will submit the tickets into a drawing for prizes. If you need additional raffle tickets this summer, you are welcome to stop in the MVES office during posted office hours.

Other Strategies to Prevent Summer Reading Slide

  • Let Kids Choose Their Reading Material: Allowing children to select their own books, including comic books, graphic novels, or magazines, increases engagement and makes reading feel less like a school assignment.

  • Establish a Daily Routine: Set aside 20-30 minutes for a "Drop Everything and Read" (DEAR) time or family reading time, which maintains consistent habits without requiring hours of work.

  • Visit the Farmington Library: Sign children up for free summer reading challenges and utilize library programs to find new books and engaging activities.

  • Read Together and Aloud: Even for proficient readers, reading together or using audiobooks on long car trips keeps reading fun and enhances comprehension.

  • Connect Reading to Everyday Life: Have children read recipes while cooking, read signs during road trips, or read about places you visit on vacation.

  • Create a Reading Challenge: Set personal goals, such as reading a certain number of books by August, and reward children for hitting milestones.

  • Explore Different Formats: Don't discount audiobooks or digital books, which can help children engage with stories even if decoding text is difficult for them.

Attendance Tip!

Getting to school on time is just as important as being at school. Research shows that continued tardiness leads to poor attendance. Many of the most important parts of a student's day happen within the first 15 minutes. This is often when they have a time to socialize with their peers, orient themselves for the day, take care of necessary business, and connect with their teacher before the day starts. Never underestimate the power of the first 15 minutes of school!

End of Day Routine

Please make sure your child's teacher has an accurate, up-to-date plan for your child's dismissal at the end of the day.

When changes are needed, please communicate those changes with your child's teacher prior to the start of the school day. We cannot always guarantee teachers will see emails during the work day (as it depends on the activities they have planned with the students).

For EMERGENCY CHANGES, please communicate with the teacher and call the front office no later than 2pm. Changes to end of day routines are difficult for students and teachers. If at all possible please change YOUR routine instead of your students routine.
