Kindergarten Lost Tooth Club ...
These boys lost their teeth within minutes of each other!
Sadly, we have had several reported incidents of gum stuck in random areas throughout the school, with children stepping on it or finding it in otherwise unwanted places.
Therefore, gum has been banned for the remainder of the year at GVS, so please make sure to remind your student(s) that it is no longer allowed. Please and thank you!
(Please note that this does not apply for those students who have gum as part of their IEP/504 plans).
GVS Library
The school library will be closed for business by Friday, May 29th. All books are due at this time and the last day to check out is Thursday, May 21st (Friday the 22nd is a teacher-work day).
Please make sure all library books are turned in by this time. Thank you for your cooperation!
But don't despair! Your library needs can be met this summer through the local Dunbar Free Library, which will have a summer program that all students are encouraged to participate in. More details to come!
Civil War Day
It's that time of year again when history comes to life on the grounds of GVS. Please join us for Civil War Day on Monday, June 8th.
This is a coveted all-day community-wide event. The day is staffed by reenactors and volunteers dressed in period-appropriate attire engaging in daily activities typical of a Civil War camp, replete with muskets, first-aid tents, marching, an officers' tent, an outdoor kitchen, a graveyard, even a cannon firing! You do not want to miss this!
Volunteers are needed to make this day a success. Many of the tasks (such as cooking/baking era-appropriate food) are easily done from home ahead of time if you cannot make it to school on the day of the event.
If you are interested in lending a hand, please contact Ms. Bechta: dbechta@gvshawks.org

A message from our School Counselor, Mrs. Widmann:
A message from our Reading Specialist, Mrs. Buckley:
SPOTLIGHT ON… Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a learning difference that makes reading, spelling, and sometimes writing more challenging. People with dyslexia are often very bright and creative, but their brains process letters and sounds in a different way. This can make it harder to read words quickly or accurately.
Authors specifically writing with dyslexic readers in mind typically focus on simple language, heavily spaced text, and larger fonts.
Some suggestions: Barrington Stoke, Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver, Elaine Heney, Sally Rippin, and Jeanne Betancourt to name a few. You can browse for physical and digital editions by searching specific key terms on Amazon Dyslexic Font Books.
A message from our Math Interventionist, Mrs. Hutchins:
Food will be for sale at the Start of Summer Celebration
There will be a food truck selling "fair food". As well, the GPTG will be selling slices of Dominos Pizza. To help the GPTG get their finger on the pulse of how many pizzas to purchase, please respond to the poll below...
