PTO Shout Out
Thanks to everyone who came to our first PTO meeting of the year, held last week. We had over 15 people in attendance, that's a record. Don't miss out on the chance and opportunity to be a part of this group that supports our school so much! Our next Meeting is Tuesday, October 7, 8 AM.
SIT and Parent Advisory Council
Community Night is This Week
Join us Tuesday evening.....Tuesday is our first United Way Community Night of the year. Please join us for a free catered meal, homework help for your kids, games, activities, and community resources. The fun begins at 5:00. We will be playing BINGO. This is open to all students and families in the North Buncombe district. It's a great way to connect with other families and build school community. Please join us!
Community School Coordinator Appreciation Week
This week, Sept 15 - 19, is United Way Community School Coordinator Appreciation Week. Our coordinator is Patty Schmid and she operates our Hawks Nest, a place for students to get supplies, clothes, snacks and resources. She also coordinates our Community School nights and coordinates the partnership with several local agencies for student mentor groups. We are excited to have Patty at our school, she is a real asset and great partner that helps strengthen community partnerships. Celebrate Patty with us this week at our first Community Night of the year, Tuesday night from 5 to 6:30. Send Patty a thank you email here.
8th Grade DC Trip Info.
The last day to reserve your child's spot on the Washington DC Trip is September 18. If you have questions about the trip, please email Coach Brown.
Spirit Week Coming Soon!
Our Student Council has chosen the week of September 22 - 26 as Spirit Week to match the Homecoming week at the high school. Spirit Days include:
- Monday, Sept 22 - Hawaiian Day
- Tuesday, Sept 23 - Camo Day
- Wednesday, Sept 24 - Rhyme without Reason (dress up with a friend or small group of friends and sport costumes that rhyme but don't necessarily connect thematically)
- Thursday, Sept 25 - Role Reversal Day (students dress as teachers and teachers as students)
- Friday, Sept 26 - Blackhawk Day (Black, White or Red)
7th Grade Health Requirements
Students entering 7th grade in North Carolina are required to have one dose of the Tdap vaccine (protecting against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and one dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). These vaccines are a booster of required kindergarten immunizations and protect against serious bacterial infections, including meningitis.
If your child is missing these vaccines, you should have received a letter from our school nurse. The deadline to have these vaccines is September 24. Students who do not have these by that time will be excluded from school, per state law. If you have questions, please email our school nurse Michele Bailey.
NC Bus Ridership Count Week
NC's Annual Student Ridership Count will take place September 22-26 this school year. This process is critical to our annual transportation budget. Encouraging students to ride the bus this week and accounting for these students will have a direct impact on our overall transportation budget. Our funding is dependent on the number of students riding the bus on those dates.
Book Fair Coming Soon
Our book fair arrives on campus on Friday, 9/19 through Friday, 9/26. All ELA classes will visit the fair and it will also be open during Open House on Wednesday, 9/24 from 4-6. Click here to visit our Fair's site.
Keeping Up With Events
Hawks Hideaway....We had it first
You may have recently seen on social media where schools are creating "serenity rooms" for staff. We are excited that we had this first, and we call it our Hawks Hideaway. This room is in a central location in our building and our wonderful PTO keeps it stocked with drinks and snacks for staff. (Donations are always appreciated). It's a great place to relax, sit in the massage chair, make a waffle in the waffle maker, or just get a cup of coffee! Our partnership with United Way helped first create this space last year.
After School Clubs and Tutoring
United Way generously supports our school by funding before and after school activities. If your student is interested in becoming involved with a club and/or would like to attend tutoring sessions before or after school, please click on the links below. Feel free to reach out to Tiffany Wooten with any questions!
The newest clubs to our school are the Adventure Club and Pickleball Club. Students can sign up for both of these clubs in the main lobby.
NB Youth Theater Stage Crew
Students who are interested in applying to be a part of the stage crew for this year's production of "Willy Wonka, Jr." can pick up an application in the main office. Forms are due to Mrs. Cooper (8th grade hall) by Friday, Sept. 19.
Open House and Tailgate
Mark Your Calendar for our annual Open House and Tailgate on Wednesday, September 24, from 4 to 6 PM. After being in school for several weeks this is a great chance to speak with your child's teachers. We also invite you to attend the home football and/or volleyball games we have scheduled that day. We will also have several food and treat trucks on campus that afternoon, including:
- 6 Pigs BBQ
- Kona Ice
- Mary's Mountain Cookies
- Crepes R-Us
- Nothing Bundt Cakes
Hawks Say Hello
Each year, our SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) Club sponsors our "Hawks Say Hello" week. Hawks Say Hello Week is coming up from September 22 - 26. Each day, students will take part in quick, fun activities designed to spark conversation, encourage kindness, and help everyone feel more connected at school. It’s a simple way to build community and remind our Hawks that even small actions—like saying hello—can make a big difference.
Gaga Ball at Recess
We are trying to improve our recess time, with equipment, as much as possible. Our latest addition is a gaga ball pit. We hope the students enjoy this!
