HCS Elementary School Updates
November 2024
November 13th is World Kindness Day.
No act of kindness is ever wasted: A small act of kindness can change someone's life.

Greetings!
Community Building Days
Thanks to Ms. Tatiana for planning and organizing the three Mountain Days. All three days the weather cooperated and we had beautiful sunny weather. Students, teachers and family volunteers safely climbed the mountains and then enjoyed the picnic and the parks afterwards. This is one of my favorite Highlander traditions!
Learning Plan Meetings
Speaking of favorite traditions, Learning Plan Meetings are a great way to connect with your child’s teacher and hear the areas of success and the areas of growth. It is a time for you, the teacher and the student to set goals and how to reach them, academically and socially. Be sure to contact your child’s teacher to sign up for this great opportunity!
Read to Succeed
What a great celebration we had on Tuesday, October 26th. We had 169 students complete the program and earn $1000 in their Collegebound fund. This is 35 more students who completed this year compared to last year. Thanks to the families for supporting your children in this incredible opportunity!!!
RICAS and NGSA test results
If you have a student in 4 - 6th grade, you will be receiving the results from last year’s standardized state testing. We were hoping for better results overall, but this year we have a new strategy to help the students who need support. This year we have built into every schedule, across the school, an intervention block where the teacher and other support staff can support the students who need it. We feel this will successfully meet the needs of the students with the most qualified people.
SIT meeting
Please consider joining us on November 12th at 5:00 for our first School Improvement Team meeting. We will start looking at our School Improvement Plan and break down each component. The link will be shared the day of the meeting.

TIP: Fall seems to be a natural time to think about gratitude, start a gratitude journal and share with your family.
Family Engagement
Thank you to all of the families that supported the many activities we had during October. From chaperoning, donating snacks to joining us on the many activities we had, my heart is full with gratitude for our Highlander Community.
We have many fun events for November which means opportunities for families to be involved.
We will have a Penny War Yearbook Fundraiser at the PVD Campus from Nov. 12 -22 and we will need help counting and rolling up the change. Please contact me 😉 (Ms. Tatiana) if you can help.
November 13th and 14th is our Title 1 meetings (one virtual, one in person) we encourage ALL FAMILIES to join us either day to learn about what it means to be a Title 1 School, but most importantly to share your opinion on how our funds should be use to support the school and students.
Please save the date Nov. 16 for a Gift Card & Toy Drive event hosted one of our Alumni Cam'ren Wheeler to benefit Highlander Families. More info in the next couple of days.

From the School Nurse
Hello,
If we haven’t met yet, either in person or over the phone (or on Dojo!), my name is Julia and I am Highlander Elementary’s school nurse. I am so happy to have joined this community! If you ever have a question or concern for the school nurse, please call the main office and they will send the call to me.
I have been a nurse for 15 years, and have worked in many different settings from hospitals, home care, schools, and prenatal care. One of my main areas of interest is diabetes prevention and management. I have two children, age 10 and 13, and my family is looking forward to adopting a dog for the first time this year.
Please keep in mind:
Highlander requires an up-to-date school physical form on every student. All students should have a physical exam completed by their doctor every year, and the school requires a copy of the school physical form for the health office record. If your child has already received a physical exam this year, please bring or fax a copy to the school. Highlander Charter Elementary fax number: 401-277-2603
If your child has any food sensitivities–for example, lactose intolerance–please have your doctor write this on the physical form or write a note for the health office so that the cafeteria can provide lactose-free milk as needed.
Highlander’s sick day policy states that students should stay home and rest with the following symptoms:
Fever of 100.4 or higher
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Itchy, red eyes that are draining or crusty
Rash that has not been evaluated by a doctor
Seizures
Any symptoms that will keep your child from participating in class:
Very tired
Frequent cough, runny nose, or sneezing that interferes with ability to do school activities
Severe headache, body aches, earache
Sore throat - a little sore throat is ok, but a bad sore throat could be strep throat, even if there is no fever. Call your doctor if concerned.
If a student has been sick with FEVER, the student should stay home until they have had no fever for 24 hours, WITHOUT the use of fever-reducing medications (Tylenol, Ibuprofen)
If a student has VOMITING or DIARRHEA, then the student must stay home for 24 hours after the LAST episode of vomiting or diarrhea
If a student has been prescribed ANTIBIOTICS by a doctor, the student must stay home for 24 hours after the FIRST dose of antibiotic (for example, strep throat infections).
COVID: If a student tests positive for COVID, the student may return to school when, for at least 24 hours, the symptoms are improving overall, and if a fever was present, the student has been without fever for 24 hours, WITHOUT the use of fever-reducing medications (Tylenol, Ibuprofen). Masks are recommended for 5 days after returning to school, but are not required.
Please help prevent others from becoming ill by staying home when you are sick. If your child is sick and unable to attend school, please send a Dojo message to the nurse on each day that your student is sick.
Thank you,
Julia Vaca
