Pumpkin Patch Landscape Lesson
Depth+Overlapping+Secondary Colors+Color Mixing
STEP BY STEP PRIMARY ART PROJECT
A Perfect Lesson for Starting the School Year
I've improved this lesson over the years to layer in as many concepts and meaningful learning experiences as possible. Students begin by learning about the horizon line they magically create by gluing down purple and green construction paper. They mix to make purple and green as students paint mysterious swirling wind and textured grass. The last of the three secondary colors are introduced next.
Who doesn't love Pumpkins?
Students use one of my two techniques to make construction paper pumpkins that they layer into their landscape while exploring foreground, middle ground, background, and overlapping to show depth.
Form Versus Shape
Students mix the color orange and paint the pumpkin lines. This is a great time to explain that artists create the illusion of form by making rounded lines from north to south. You can use annotation software to help students practice the lines digitally before they paint physically.
Learning Can Be Fuglefun
This lesson has entertaining videos that help students learn about overlapping, outlining, and color mixing. At the end, you'll find a 10 question review quiz where students can try to apply what they know about creating a landscape as they view the very sincere pumpkin patch from the Peanuts animation.
