What's Going On inthe Library?April 2019

We Have a Tie!

The American Library Association awards the Caldecott Medal to the artist of "the most distinguished American picture book for children." This year, first- and second-graders chose TWO titles for the Oak Lawn Mock Caldecott: Niblet and Ralph by Zachariah O'Hora, and The Rough Patch by Brian Lies. The Rough Patch actually garnered a REAL Caldecott Honor!

On the blog, I posted some of the kids' ballots with reasons why they voted for these books, as well as some of their illustrations of their favorite scenes. I shared the news on Twitter and tagged the illustrators. O'Hora "liked" the tweet, and Lies wrote back!

Rooster Games Are Coming!

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, students who read 7 or more 2018 RI Children's Book Award (RICBA) nominees qualified to participate in our second annual Rooster Games, This event will feature multiple rounds of gameshow-style activities that test kids' knowledge of the RICBA books.

Our 5 team members who are able to make the event - Madison Bogdon, Sadie Butler, Sophia Travisono, Marcus Whitfield, and Maisie Wynn - will compete against several other elementary schools on Thursday, April 11, at the Central Branch of the Cranston Public Library. Wish them luck!
