Connections

Nan Hart is a new member of our congregation who jumped right in to working with the RE program. UCN and the Lay Pastoral Care Team has received the following request from April Hart.

“I am Nan Hart's daughter and I am helping to organize her after care for her upcoming hip replacement surgery. Surgery will take place on Friday, October 30th, and Nan will be in the hospital for one overnight (possibly more). My husband (Nan's son), myself and Nan's sister will be the immediate after-care team.”

April has organized a meal train with link: https://mealtrain.com/g5k16m

Dates, address and meal preferences are all indicated within the site.

The family is also seeking assistance with transportation to/from a few medical appointments. Nan lives in Grafton and most appointments will likely be Grafton/Mequon.

You can sign on to the meal train directly. If you’re able to provide transportation, please reach out to Judy DeLillo (720-935-0851) who is helping to coordinate with the family on behalf of our LPCT.

Ask the Minister

Ask the Minister - Responses XII

Because of time constraints, many of the excellent questions submitted during service on August 2nd were left unanswered. Over the next several months, I will be responding to those we didn’t get to and others that have been submitted since in our newsletters and regular mailings. If you have other questions you’d like me to consider, please write me at reverik@ucnorth.org.

Question: What is to be done with people who pit us against one another to profit from war/division? How can I keep hope alive when so much is going wrong? How do we come together for the well-being of the majority?

Response: All of these questions were submitted during service in August and all speak to a growing frustration we might be feeling regarding the state of the country, politics and what is clearly a reactionary shift in our communal values. After nearly a decade of the Obama administration, in which time several forever wars were ended, same-sex marriage became the law of the land and healthcare became available to millions of folks who could not have otherwise afforded it, it is not surprising (but no less disappointing) that there has been a backlash from the Right.

Bolstered by a specific (and inaccurate) reading of Christianity, the Right has successfully appealed to people’s lowest impulses, stoking fear in order to better control the narrative.

So-called “culture wars” around transgender young people, affirmative action and access to reproductive health care have been effective in dividing a populace against itself, further obscuring the disastrous effects of unchecked capitalism and wealth inequality that is increasing at an alarming rate.

Given the tenor of political and personal discourse these days, what with our elected leaders openly spreading lies and doubling down on inappropriate, inaccurate remarks, it might be easy to despair. It is, in fact, easier to shut down, turn away and tune out, hoping that eventually everyone will regain their senses (and moral convictions).

However, those who are in power and wish to remain in power are banking on this very tendency. This is what was meant by “muzzle velocity” as popularized in the pages of Project 2025, arguing that bombarding the public with many different crises at once will lead to fatigue and disengagement, making it all the easier for a minority to continue to rule with only its own best interests in mind. And it has worked, to a point.

But as Unitarian Universalists, we have an opportunity to make a choice, every hour of every day: the choice between Love and fear. In this case, choosing love means refusing to bend to the narrative that everything is already broken and cannot be saved. Love means refusing to demonize the other, even if their voting record is partially responsible for the mess in which we find ourselves. Love means advocating for rural farmers with the same gusto and conviction as we would for those suffering from poverty in the inner city. Love means talking to our neighbors and helping them even when we disagree with them. And Love compels us to refuse to believe that we are more different than alike, and that those systems that oppress one do not affect everyone else.

Unfortunately, though Love is a simple answer, it is no easy path. But it is places like Unitarian Church North where we get to engage in this love-creating mindset, replete with others who are struggling with these same issues and who hold common values. Hope comes from being able to engage, first in safety with those with whom we agree, and then in the vulnerable space between dialogue and true relationship with others. The less we can blame folks for their votes and more we can sympathize with how they may have internalized lies from people whom they should be able to trust (their elected officials, their pastors, law enforcement, etc.), the more quickly we might cease seeing other people as the problem and lay the blame squarely where it belongs: those whose wealth amplifies their influence and interests to the detriment of the rest of us.

Be sure to vote next week, and if you are in need of hope in these difficult times, please come to church.

Yours in Faith,

Rev. Erik

UCN’s Animal Ministry wishes to thank all who participated in the Animal Blessing service of October 18. At the service, the Animal Ministry distributed a survey seeking input on the animal concerns and interests that the congregation would like the ministry to prioritize. Social and Racial Justice

Upcoming Election

In just a few short weeks voters in Wisconsin can start submitting their ballots for the upcoming midterm election, November 3. Early voting using absentee ballots begins October 14. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is October 29; the request for one can be made through myvote.wi.gov. Register to vote AND confirm that you are registered to vote. Myvote.wi.gov is the legitimate and very useful website provided by the government to aid in the election process for voters. There are other "voter registration" sites that are not legitimate and are used to acquire private data on individual voters. Be careful.

In the past several years the Social Justice Committee and our ministers have strongly encouraged all of us to vote for those candidates and issues that support our values. Now is the time for each of us to begin our due diligence, researching the positions candidates hold and exploring the repercussions of proposed legislation, both statewide and locally as applicable to your area.

Statewide, there are three proposed constitutional amendments to consider. The Wisconsin Legislature already voted in favor of these amendments in 2 sessions, making the November 3 ballot the final step to approve or deny the adoption of the amendments. These amendments are disturbingly contrary to UU values and advances that have benefited many people in our state. The links below explain the consequences of the amendments that are not apparent in the original wording. There are many more that can be found with a simple search online.

Shall section 27 article 1 of the constitution be created to prohibit governmental entities in the state from discriminating against, or granting preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, public contracting, or public administration?”

League of Women Voters (LWV) explanation, in part: So, what does this amendment intend to accomplish? It prohibits the state from granting
“preferential treatment” to marginalized people. If this amendment passes, it will eliminate the equity-based gains Wisconsin has made over the last 60 years

Shall section 18 of article I of the constitution, which deals with religious liberty, be amended to prohibit the state or a political subdivision of the state from ordering the closure of, or forbidding gatherings in, places of worship in response to a state of emergency, including a public health emergency?”

Shall section 10 (1) (c) of article V of the constitution be amended to prohibit the governor, in exercising his or her partial veto authority, from creating or increasing or authorizing the creation or increase of any tax or fee?”

Thank you for reading and for voting your values.

STP Update

Coalition On Lead Emergency (COLE) is the next Share the Plate recipient. The goals of COLE are to prevent and respond to lead poisoning in Milwaukee. They do so in partnerships with those impacted by lead poisoning including families, faith leaders, neighborhood-based organizations, environmentalists, health care systems, academics, workforce development providers, non-profits, community activists, and dedicated volunteers.

COLE seeks an end to childhood lead poisoning in Milwaukee through policy changes, legislative action, governmental accountability, and infusion of substantial private/public funding for strategic work. Additional services include:

  • Creating training and employment pathways to do lead abatement work.
  • Engaging and supporting parents and families impacted by lead poisoning.
  • Providing families with resources to help children lower lead levels in the home.
  • Educating the community in lead poisoning prevention.

Half of the donations for November and December will go to Coalition on Lead Emergency. You can donate using PayPal or Breeze at www.ucnorth.org. Checks should include “STP” on the memo line. Your generosity to support moving towards a lead-free Milwaukee is greatly appreciated!

Bad River Film Screening & Discussion Panel, November 12th

At its core, this film is the story of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa's decades-long fight for sovereignty, land, and water, set against a legacy of broken treaties that stretches back generations. Understanding that history isn't separate from the environmental stakes, it's an essential foundation that too many of us never learned about. Event flyer.

The minister or Service Assistant (SA) will usually deliver the announcements. The text of a spoken announcement should be sent by email to UCN’s Sunday Services Committee (sundayservices@ucnorth.org) no later than noon on the Thursday preceding the service. The final decision on all spoken announcements resides with the SA, who will consider the anticipated length of a service and may abbreviate some spoken announcements. Please see the website for more details on spoken announcements.

We also provide New to UU and UCN Classes in the Spring and Fall. It is not necessary to attend the classes, however they are very informative, providing information about Unitarian Universalism and our church (its history and how it operates). For more information, you can contact Cecile Duhnke at cecileduhnke@gmail.com or Tannie Bemis at bemis.tannie@gmail.com.

  • Our photo directory of members and pledging friends is sent out a few times each year. If you would prefer a printed color copy, we can print them for $5. Just tell Lyn if you want one.

We will be keeping a paper sign-up sheet at church, or you can sign up by emailing the care team at care@ucnorth.org. Putting your name on the list does not commit you to helping when asked. Thank you!
