American French Film Festival
French students at RHS attended the American French Film Festival on October 29 at the Directors Guild of America. Admission to screening was free and open to all high school teachers and their students in Southern California. The film was followed by a meeting with the main actors, during which students could ask them questions.
The movie we watched was called “La Nouvelle Vague” (French for "the New Wave"), an immensely influential French art film movement that emerged in the late 1950s. It was characterized by a rejection of traditional filmmaking conventions and a spirit of experimentation, pioneering the modern concept of the independent director as the film's primary "author" (auteur theory). The story was focusing on the filming of the movie “Breathless” by Godard.
The Key Characteristics of la Nouvelle Vague are: Experimental Techniques, Realism and Authenticity, and Low Budgets.
Legacy
La Nouvelle Vague had a profound and lasting influence on global cinema, helping to pave the way for modern independent and arthouse filmmaking and inspiring subsequent movements like New Hollywood.
Alumni Visit
We were delighted to welcome Gunnor Engblom back to Rowland High School for the first time since 1977! Originally from Sweden, Gunnor came to us as a foreign exchange student. Now residing in Lima, Peru, he has developed a remarkable career as both a marathon runner and a passionate birder. Gunnor's journey from our school to his adventures in South America is a testament to the impact that cultural exchanges can have on our lives. We hope to see him again soon and wish him all the best in his future endeavors!
