THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - December 19, 2025
A LETTER FROM HCS ADMINISTRATION
Dear HCS Families,
As the holiday season arrives and our school days grow brighter with anticipation, we want to extend our warmest wishes to every HCS family that makes up our community. This time of year offers a special opportunity to pause, reflect, and celebrate all that we share together.
We are incredibly grateful for the parents, grandparents, mentors, volunteers, and community members who generously give their time, talents, and care to support our students and staff. Your partnership brings warmth, joy, and strength to our school and helps make Hinesburg Community School such a special place to learn and grow.
Throughout the year, we are inspired by the kindness, curiosity, and resilience we see in our students, and by the way families and staff come together to support one another. As winter settles in and our days are filled with crisp mornings and snowy moments, these connections help make our school a welcoming place for everyone.
As you celebrate with family and friends, we hope your days are filled with laughter, connection, and moments of rest. We wish you a joyful holiday season and a bright start to the new year, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in the weeks ahead.
With warm wishes,
Tim, Alexis and Alicia

HCS COMMUNITY STORYTELLING PROJECT
Hinesburg Community School was buzzing with energy as we hosted an exhibition celebrating the people who make our community so special.
As part of an oral history project, pairs of seventh- and eighth-grade students selected a member of the Hinesburg community whose story they believed deserved to be shared. Through interviews, photography, and writing, students created short feature pieces honoring each individual’s life, experiences, and contributions. Along the way, they explored an essential question: How can listening to people’s stories help us better understand ourselves and one another?
Today’s exhibition highlighted this meaningful work, featuring 45 large-format photographs and accompanying oral histories of school staff, local business owners, police officers, and other community members. Parents, caregivers, and fellow students were invited to walk through the display and learn more about the neighbors who shape our town.
Be sure to watch for The Hinesburg Record, where many of these student-created oral histories will be published in the coming weeks.

THE CVSD EARLY EDUCATION LOTTERY IS NOW OPEN FOR 2026-2027!
The CVSD Early Education Program is now accepting applications for a random prekindergarten lottery drawing for the 2026-27 school year. This lottery is for an opportunity to enroll in one of our school-based classrooms which runs 4 partial days per week. Our school-based prekindergarten classrooms are 5 STARs, licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children in an inclusive setting. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS).
Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar. Children who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2026, who are not eligible for kindergarten, and live in the communities of Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George, and Williston are eligible to enter the lottery. Families who are selected for the lottery and choose to enroll their child in a CVSD program access their Act 166 publicly funded prekindergarten funds for the school-based program.
All applications must be received by February 5, 2026, and are located on the CVSD Early Education website under PreK Enrollment. Paper applications are available upon request.
For additional information, questions about our program, or any concerns about your child’s development, please visit our website or contact Director of Early Education, Erin Gagne at egagne@cvsdvt.org. Our Early Education team is also available for developmental screenings in the areas of communication, social-emotional development, motor skills, adaptive development, and cognition.
