Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - September 15, 2025
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
Last week, all of our schools wrapped up their Open Houses. It is always wonderful to see such a tremendous turnout, which truly reflects the strong partnership and engagement our families have with our schools. We hope the experience was both informative and helpful as we continue working together to support every student’s success.
Friday night marked the first home football game of the season, and it was a perfect evening under the lights. The Hawk’s Nest was rocking, with students, families, and fans showing tremendous spirit and staying loud and supportive until the very end. While the outcome wasn’t what we had hoped for against an excellent New Canaan team, the Hawks played hard and showed great promise. We look forward to an exciting and successful season ahead.
Amid the excitement and promise of a new school year, we are also reminded of the challenges beyond our schools—acts of violence that heighten tensions and deepen divisions. This can make it hard to remember that we are connected by our community, that our differences—including differences of opinion—can make us stronger, and that, at the heart of it, we all want our schools to be safe, welcoming, and supportive places for every child.
As President John F. Kennedy reminded us, “For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s future. And we are all mortal.” In that spirit, I encourage all of us to lean into the connection and care that make Newtown such a special place. Our students benefit most when we show them, through our words and actions, the power of kindness, respect, and shared purpose.
I wish you all a peaceful week.
Warm regards,
Anne

NPS School Security and Safety Survey
We remind all parents, staff, and interested community members to take a few minutes to complete the School Security & Safety Survey and share your perspectives. Your feedback is an essential part of shaping both immediate decisions and future investments in school safety.
The survey will remain open through September 19th.
To help you make an informed response to the question on the survey regarding the CEIA OpenGate system, we encourage you to review this resource: FAQs: CEIA OpenGate Weapons Detection System at NHS. For more information, you may also reference last week's NPS Weekly Update's Message from the Superintendent.
Thank you for taking the time to share your input and for your continued partnership in supporting the safety and well-being of all students in Newtown Public Schools.
Celebrating Our Differences
At Newtown Public Schools, we remain dedicated to creating an environment where every student and family feels welcomed and included. From September 15 through October 15, we recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month. This annual observance honors the rich history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans, whose roots trace to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
This observance has a meaningful history of its own. First established in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson, it was later expanded to a month-long recognition by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The start date of September 15 is significant, marking the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile following on September 16 and 18. Columbus Day, or Día de la Raza, also falls within this commemorative period.

Meet the Leaders ~ Hawley
This year Hawley School welcomes back Principal Chris Moretti, who has served as Principal since 2014. Joining him is Assistant Principal Alison Carmody, who brings a strong background in elementary leadership. Ms. Carmody previously spent four years as an Assistant Principal in Watertown and, before that, two years in a role very similar to this one—supporting elementary students while also overseeing special education.
We are excited to welcome Ms. Carmody to Newtown and look forward to the great work she and Mr. Moretti will accomplish together as a leadership team at Hawley.
NMS Students Learn about Indigenous Nations
Seventh graders became living historians, researching a pre-colonial Indigenous nation and creating an engaging booth to showcase its culture, government, and key resources.
On Friday September 12, the classrooms became an interactive learning showcase. Students visited each other's presentations to trade knowledge, acting as both teachers and learners in a hands-on exchange.

Nighthawks' Week of Giving
Nighthawks Week of Giving is back! Our Fall sports teams will be supporting the Faith Food Pantry once again. Student-athletes from every team will contribute by gathering nonperishable food and essential household items to help local families in need.
This effort showcases the generosity, teamwork, and community spirit that define our Nighthawk family—proving that giving back is just as important as competing on the field.
A huge thank you to NHS Field Hockey on a great collection drive!
Friday Night Lights
Friday Night Lights returned to Blue and Gold Stadium, bringing our community together for an unforgettable evening of school spirit and support. Fans packed the stands to cheer on the Nighthawks in a spirited matchup under the lights. While the team came up short on the scoreboard, the night was a true celebration of pride, unity, and the vibrant energy that makes our community so special.
The boys will be on the road for a few weeks. The next home game will be October 17th, which will also be Senior Night for Football, Cheer and Dance!
A huge THANK-YOU to Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue for being part of our night!
Pink Out Shirts
Newtown Football is selling T-shirts for the Pink Out game on October 24th.
All proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research. These shirts are pre-order only. Please help support a great cause.

Get Involved, Be Connected, Have a Voice - Join a Newtown PTA!
Our PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) is a group made up of parents, teachers, and sometimes community members who work together to support our schools. The primary goal of our PTAs is to build a strong connection between families and schools to create a positive learning environment for students. PTAs often organize activities and events that benefit students, such as fundraisers, family nights, and volunteer programs. These events help raise money for classroom supplies, field trips, or other school needs that may not be covered by the school budget.
In addition to fundraising, the PTA acts as a bridge between parents and school administrations. They advocate for students by addressing concerns or providing feedback to school leaders. PTAs also host meetings, or informational sessions to keep parents informed about important issues, such as curriculum changes, testing schedules, or educational policies. By fostering collaboration among parents, teachers, and administrators, our PTAs plays a crucial role in enriching the school community and supporting student success.
You can find a link to each school's PTA by clicking on this link.
Meal Charging and Account Management with MySchoolBucks
Newtown Public Schools follows a Board-approved Meal Charging Policy that ensures all students have access to a healthy meal each school day, regardless of their meal account balance. While we encourage families to keep their child’s account in good standing, students will not be denied a meal due to a lack of funds.
To support families in managing their child’s school meal account, we offer MySchoolBucks, a secure online payment system that allows parents to:
- Add funds to their student’s account
- Set up automatic payments
- Monitor account balances and purchase history
- Receive low-balance notifications
We encourage all families to sign up for a MySchoolBucks account at www.myschoolbucks.com or through the mobile app. By staying informed and maintaining a positive balance, you help ensure a smooth and uninterrupted meal experience for your child.
For more information about the district’s Meal Charging Policy, please visit our website or your child's school.
Introducing Stopfinder: A New Transportation App for Families
We’re excited to announce that Newtown Public Schools will be launching Stopfinder, a new app designed to keep you informed about your child’s bus schedule in real time.
Stopfinder is a secure, easy-to-use, all-in-one app that gives you access to the most accurate transportation information—anytime, anywhere. With the app, you can:
-
View your child’s bus schedule.
-
Set up GeoAlerts to receive notifications when the bus arrives or departs from specific locations, such as your home, school, or other points along the route.
-
Customize Alert Zones for individual students based on their unique route.
An email invitation will be sent this week from no-reply@stopfinder.com to the primary parent/guardian email we have on file. The way the system is configured, one contact is designated as the primary Stopfinder contact—this individual will receive the initial invitation and will then have the ability to invite additional contacts (e.g., the other parent, grandparents, caregivers, etc.).
Once you receive the invitation, download the Stopfinder app for free from the App Store or Google Play, and follow the instructions to register. Please note: You must complete the registration process using the district’s invitation before you can access your student’s transportation schedule.
If you have any questions, please contact Stopfinder Support at stopfindersupport@all-startransportation.com for assistance.
