OUR CURRICULUM OUR CURRICULUM

The SC1 and SC2 classrooms use the enCore adapted curriculum. This curriculum has a total of 36 units; each grade level (K-5) has 6 units each. Because our classes have multiple grade levels we can use two or more units simultaneously, if we chose to do so. For example, a teacher can use a Kindergarten unit, a 2nd grade unit, and a 4th grade unit to meet the different needs of those students. Each unit has an adapted Fiction book and an adapted Non-Fiction book. It takes six weeks to complete one full unit, we work 3 weeks with each book in the unit. In addition to reading, each unit provides activities related to vocabulary, writing, phonics, math, science and social studies.

The SC3 and SC6 classrooms use the Wit and Wisdom reading program. There are four modules. Each module has a variety of lessons which include writing.

Our Focus for this Week Our Focus for this Week

In order for our students to be successful at school and in their classrooms, they need to know and understand what their expectations are. As their teachers, we are focusing this week on student safety, routines, and procedures. Classroom routines and procedures will be reviewed daily. Once these are learned the classroom will function smoothly so learning can begin.

Students need to be safe while in their school environment. Teachers will make this happen by modeling and reviewing the proper way to move in the hallways, how to behave in their classrooms, and how to behave while playing at recess.

Students will also practice going to and from the cafeteria. They will learn how to give their student number to a cafeteria staff member and to make their choices in the food line, quietly and quickly. They will practice good manners and use an "inside" voice while at their class table.

We will introduce our students to our respective curriculums. Dr. Gitau is working with the unit for Peter Rabbit. Mrs. Bassery is working with 3 units: Peter Rabbit with her Kindergartners, The Velveteen Rabbit with her First and Second graders, and Jack and the Beanstalk with her Fourth and Fifth graders.

Ms.Turnbull and Ms. Goldwire will introduce their students to their units of study with the Wit and Wisdom curriculum.
