🐾 Welcome Back, Janney Jaguars! 🐾 Welcome Back, Janney Jaguars!

Hello Janney Families,

Welcome to a new school year! In just a few days, our halls and playgrounds will be filled with the joyful energy of over 700 Janney Jaguars, and I couldn’t be more excited to begin this next chapter together. Whether you’re returning or joining us for the first time, thank you for being part of this incredible community.

As I begin my fifth year as principal, I’m proud to share our school-wide theme for 2025–2026: Together We Thrive. This theme was born out of reflection—on the challenges we’ve met, the ways we’ve shown up for one another, and how we continue to grow stronger together.

One moment that truly captured this spirit happened in a pre-kindergarten classroom last spring. During choice time, a group of students noticed that only one friend had signed up to go to a particular center. Quietly and without prompting, a few of them moved their own names so that friend wouldn’t have to play alone. It was a simple act, but one filled with empathy, kindness, and community—and a powerful reminder that even our youngest Jaguars understand what it means to thrive together.

This theme is also grounded in our refreshed core values—Community, Joy, Empathy, Integrity, and Kindness—which were co-created with students, families, and staff. These values will guide the way we learn, support one another, and grow throughout the year.

We’re also approaching the end of our centennial year, and it has been wonderful to celebrate this incredible milestone as a community. Look for ways to keep the celebration going as we close out 2025.

I look forward to seeing you all very soon—at school, Back to School Night, and at the many events that make Janney so special!

With gratitude,

Danielle Singh, Proud Principal

Janney's Three Parent-Led Organizations

Janney benefits from three parent-led organizations that collaborate to strengthen our school community—supporting our school leadership, teachers, staff, and families in intersecting but distinct ways. While each has its own mission, they often partner on shared goals.

🍎 Local School Advisory Team (LSAT): A committee of elected parents and teachers who meet monthly to advise the principal on teaching and learning, leadership, professional development, resources, safe and effective learning environments, and family engagement.

🍎 Parent Teacher Association (PTA): Builds connections between families and school staff, fosters an inclusive community, and raises funds to provide enhanced opportunities for students.

🍎 Janney+ Executive Board: Provides oversight for the organization’s fulfillment of its mission to the community: to add to the lives of Janney students, families, and staff by providing opportunities for enrichment and care that enhance the school’s educational purposes.

Interested in learning more or getting involved?

Contact the LSAT, PTA, or Janney+ Programs Exec Board- we’d love to connect with you!

Parent Volunteers Needed for LSAT Parent Volunteers Needed for LSAT

🙌 Join the Local School Advisory Team (LSAT)! We are seeking parent volunteers to serve a two-year term (SY 2025–26 and 2026–27). The LSAT is made up of elected parents and teachers who meet monthly to advise the Principal on the Local School Plan, budget, and school-wide policies. Past discussion points have included Janney's Technology Policy, school priorities in the face of budget cuts, and the usage of school space.

If you’re interested, please email Principal Singh at Danielle.Singh@k12.dc.gov with a short statement (250 words or less) outlining your interests and how you can contribute. Elections will take place at the start of the school year, and newly elected members will begin their tenure in September.

Submissions from interested parents are due by COB Friday, September 5th. Voting will be open to parents from Monday, September 8th through Friday, September 12th.

The picnic will take place on the blacktop and surrounding areas with plenty of picnic tables and a back-up plan for inclement weather. Dinner and dessert available for purchase from The Big Cheese Truck, PhoWheels, Captain Cookie, and Clayboys. DJ Rich Casey will entertain the kids with dancing and fun activities.

💙 Back-to-School Anticipatory Stress

Just a friendly reminder that the start of school can bring both excitement and worry. Some kids show anticipatory stress through stomachaches, sleep changes, clinginess, or meltdowns.

Try these mindful supports:

  • Ask intentional questions like “What made you smile today?”.
  • Create simple routines, morning breakfast, bedtime chat.
  • Normalize big feelings: It’s okay to be nervous when starting something new.

Small moments of connection help children feel safe and supported during transitions.
