March Lifeline: Perseverance
"I persist toward my goals despite obstacles, discouragements, or disappointments."
What is Perseverance?
Perseverance means not giving up. It is sticking with something even when it feels hard. It means working hard, finishing what you start, and trying again when you face challenges. When we persevere, we feel proud of ourselves for completing a goal. Perseverance helps us grow stronger and more confident each time we keep going.
Simple Way to Say It to Kids: Perseverance is when you keep trying, even when something is difficult.
Family Discussion Questions
Can you think of a time when something felt really hard, but you kept going? What did you do when you wanted to give up? How did you feel when you finished?
What helps you keep trying when something is tricky?
Who can you ask for help when you feel stuck?
What is a goal you are working on right now that needs perseverance?
Dear Boone Meadow Families -
What an action-packed week we’ve had coming out of February Break! The energy is high, classrooms are buzzing, and students have jumped right back into learning with enthusiasm. And if this week is any indication, March is going to keep us hopping in the very best way.
The next four weeks are full — and full of great things. Between academic assessment milestones like IREAD and ILEARN checkpoints, meaningful service through Do Days, community celebrations like International Night, Youth Art Month, plus special events including the Book Fair, an author visit, Kindergarten Round Up, and music performances — there is so much rich learning and community-building ahead. It’s busy. It’s exciting. And it’s filled with opportunities for our students to grow, lead, create, and shine.
Below is a look at what’s on the radar as we head toward Spring Break (which is somehow only four weeks away!):
- ZCS Do Days (March 3–4) - We are preparing several service opportunities, including a school-wide food drive to support our BME Food Pantry. Our Student Council is leading the charge on this effort, and you can find more details in the section below. We love seeing our students serve and support others in meaningful ways.
- International Night (March 12, 5:30–7:00 PM) - This is always such a special evening of celebration and connection. We are still looking for additional families, groups, or organizations willing to share their cultural heritage with our community. If you know someone who would love to participate, please connect them with Mr. Gatlin, our assistant principal. We hope to see everyone there for this incredible night of learning and community.
- Yearbook Sales — Deadline March 13 - Online ordering is the only option, and sales close March 13. Be sure to secure your copy so you don’t miss out on capturing this year’s memories! See the details located below.
- Music Performances (March 16) - Our first and third grade students will soon take the stage for their family performances. A big thank you to Mr. Doublestein for his leadership and preparation — we cannot wait to see our students shine.
- Book Fair (Week of March 16) - Preview Day is March 13, and PTO’s Family Shopping Night will take place March 18, aligned with the Bloodmobile visit from 3:00–7:00 PM. It’s a wonderful opportunity to build home libraries and foster a love of reading.
- Author Visit – Shannon Anderson (March 20) - We are excited to welcome local author Shannon Anderson, who will lead multiple sessions with our students throughout the day. Additional details and book pre-sale information are included below. In the meantime, feel free to explore her work at her website and get excited for her visit! Check out the additional information located below. https://www.shannonisteaching.com/
- Kindergarten Round Up (March 24) - It’s hard to believe that it’s already here! We are just three weeks away and would greatly appreciate your help spreading the word about early registration. Early enrollment truly makes a difference in helping us plan and prepare for next year’s incoming class. Information is included below — please share with neighbors and friends.
Yes, it’s a full stretch — but it’s also a meaningful one. These experiences help shape not only strong learners, but strong community members. We are so grateful for your partnership in making these opportunities possible for your children. Let’s make it a great March together!
All the best,
Team Meadow, Tom & Jarrod
Tom Hundley, Principal
Jarrod Gatlin, Assistant Principal
Kindergarten Round Up Is Coming!
Kindergarten Round Up will be hosted at each ZCS elementary school on Tuesday, March 24! This is an exciting opportunity for families with incoming Kindergarteners to learn more about our schools and the year ahead. Pre-registration is required and now open for families, so be sure to keep your eyes open for updates coming your way. Know a family with a future Kindergartener? Tell your neighbors!
International Night - March 12, 2025
We are excited to announce that International Night is returning to Boone Meadow!
This exciting event will take place on Thursday, March 12 from 5:30 – 7:00 PM. On this special evening, BME families will come together and learn about the amazing and various cultures at Boone Meadow. Years past have been a tremendous success, and we are excited to do this once again. If you had a booth last year, we hope that you will consider having a booth again. (See details below.) If you did not host a booth last year but thought about it, now is your chance! You can also bring your family and enjoy the evening as a participant. Whatever you do, don’t miss out!
**If you are interested in having a booth, please email our assistant principal, Mr. Jarrod Gatlin, at jgatlin@zcs.k12.in.us. Please specify your name, your BME student’s name, and the country you will represent.
Shannon Anderson - Author Visit on March 20th
We are excited to welcome award-winning children’s author Shannon Anderson to BME on March 20th!
Shannon is a former elementary teacher of 26 years who now travels the country sharing her love of reading, writing, and goal-setting with students. She is known for her high energy, heart, and humor — and for inspiring young people to discover their strengths and chase their goals. One of her books, I LOVE Strawberries!, was even featured on Bedtime Stories with Ryan, where Ryan Reynolds read it to children around the world! https://www.shannonisteaching.com/
During her visit, Shannon will lead engaging sessions designed to spark creativity, ignite curiosity, and encourage students to believe in their own possibilities.
Book Order Information: Keep your eyes peeled for a (hard-copy) order form that will come home next week. Families may pre-order books through March 18th, and Shannon will personally autograph all pre-ordered copies.
We look forward to an inspiring day of stories, laughter, and learning!
Student Council Do Days Project: BME Food Pantry Restock
In the spirit of ZCS Do Days, our 4th Grade Student Council is inviting students to bring in a canned food item to support our local Boone Meadow community. Donations will be collected on Friday, March 6th. All items donated will stay right here in our Boone Meadow community to help families in need. Thank you for supporting this meaningful opportunity to show kindness and care for others!
As we prepare for our upcoming Food Drive, we are focusing on collecting easy-to-prepare, shelf-stable items that can support students and families with simple breakfasts, quick meals, and healthy snacks.
For breakfast items: cereal cups or small cereal boxes, instant oatmeal packets, single-serve shelf-stable milk cartons, breakfast or granola bars, and applesauce cups or pouches. These items help ensure students can begin their day with something quick and nourishing.
Lunch and Dinner options: Easy, microwaveable meals such as Easy Mac or pasta cups, ramen or noodle cups, microwaveable rice packets, shelf-stable soups, canned ravioli or spaghetti, and tuna or chicken pouches that do not require a can opener. We are also collecting peanut butter or sunflower butter cups and jelly to help provide simple sandwich options.
To assist with protein and filling snacks: nut-free trail mix (if possible), individual nut packs, beef sticks, shelf-stable cheese crackers, peanut butter crackers, and shelf-stable hummus snack packs. These items offer important nutrition and energy throughout the day.
We are also collecting fruit and vegetable options such as fruit cups packed in juice, applesauce pouches, raisins or other dried fruit, shelf-stable veggie cups, and 100% fruit juice boxes to help provide balanced choices. In addition, popcorn bags, pretzels, Goldfish crackers, graham crackers, and animal crackers—simple favorites that are easy to pack and enjoy.
Shelf-stable milk and juice boxes to round out meals and snacks.
Thank you for helping us support our families in a meaningful and practical way through your generosity.

Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days before the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state-mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee for the full background check which will expire after 5 years.
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government-issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry.
