7th Grade C.C.R. Meetings

Our school counselor, Ms. Strate, has sent out special invitations to 7th grade parents and guardians to meet with her to discuss your student's career and college readiness!

These Plan for College and Career Readiness (CCR) meetings are an essential opportunity to collaborate on your child's educational journey. Held during September and October, these sessions provide dedicated time to review academic success strategies, address attendance goals, and learn key habits for navigating middle school and beyond. Together with Ms. Strate, families will explore the student's individual interests and aptitudes, set a targeted S.M.A.R.T. goal for middle school, and address any questions you or your child may have. Invitations to schedule your appointment are being sent directly via email, so please keep an eye on your inbox so you can reserve a time slot that works best for your schedule.

General Information General Information

Tutoring Opportunities, Credit Recovery, Summer School and Grade Retention

The following information outlines a variety of opportunities for students to receive additional academic assistance if they are struggling in any content area. All of these opportunities are free of charge. Margaret L. Hopkin Middle School teachers and staff are working very hard to help students be successful at little or no expense to their families.

  • Teachers are available after school: Teachers are generally available for student assistance after school Tues-Thurs until 3:05. Required meetings may alter their availability. Several teachers spend additional time (beyond contract time) at the school to individually assist students. Students or parents can ask individual teachers when they are available.

  • BEACON After-School Program Tutoring/Homework Club: Adult tutors are available to all students after-school in the BEACON Room from 2:35 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday- Thursday as part of our Academic Assistance Program. Snacks are provided. If your student would like to participate in this program, there is paperwork to complete available in the MLHMS main office. More information on page 22.

Credit Recovery

If a student earns a failing grade (F) in any of their core courses (Math, English, Science, and Social Studies) at the end of a quarter, they will be required to complete an online course for credit recovery. This online course is a course that covers the material that was covered in the failed course. This course will take place after school and on top of the students regular course work. Once a student completes this online course, their grade will change from an F to a P for passing.

Summer School

If a student fails to complete the required online credit recovery course by the due date, they are then required to attend Summer School. They will also pay a fee that will support instructor compensation and student materials.

Retention

If a student fails to complete Summer School, this puts them at risk of retention; meaning they could be held back a school year because they do not show comprehension in one or more core subjects. This is why it is vital that students show that they put forth an effort to understand the subject and material all year round they could be considered for retention; Students do this the following ways starting the first day of school:

  1. Attend school every day - attendance and being present in the classroom is key to understanding the subject and the material.

  2. Working with their teachers after school - their teachers will record that they attended in the school’s SIS system.

  3. Attending Parent Teacher Conferences with a parent/guardian - students will be required to sign in at the main office so attendance can be recorded.

During fourth quarter midterms, a committee will meet to review any students who failed a quarter and evaluate the effort that they put towards their grades. It will then be determined whether the student will be retained or not.
