Senior Seminar Speaker
Western Michigan University
by Hilary Young
This week we had a speaker from Western Michigan University. I personally have never thought about applying to Western, probably because I didn’t really know much about the school. After the presentation, I had learned so much new information about the school. The speaker, Madeline, was super enjoyable to listen to. Sometimes the virtual presentations can be super boring, but hers was enjoyable and I actually found myself engaged. We got a lot of information in a short amount of time.
I really enjoyed learning about the campus life at Western, and what the school has to offer. I really liked that they have a pharmacy on campus where you can get your everyday prescriptions. Another thing I liked was that every freshman is assigned an upperclassmen mentor that's there for us as we need, but were not obligated to talk with them. Coming into college as a freshman is scary, but having that older classmate to talk to if needed is a huge stress relief. One thing the speaker mentioned was, despite western being a bigger, D1 school, the class sizes are smaller. 85% of their classes have less than 30 students.
She didn’t say much about the professors, but she did mention that 97% (or so) of students said they had teachers that made learning enjoyable. I need teachers like that for me to learn. If my teachers don’t seem excited to teach, why should I be excited to learn? Madeline didn’t mention the staff-to-student ratio, but I would assume it’s small enough that students can form a connection with their professors, and not fall through the cracks. Having a good connection with your professors can make college just a bit easier.
Overall, I learned a lot about Western Michigan University. There are many clubs and organizations to join, some for certain majors, others for different hobbies and interests. I also didn’t know Western was a D1 school, and for being D1 the class sizes are very small. There are many perks for full-time students, and the school really does care about their students' health. They offer free counseling to students to help with their mental and emotional health. In the end, I did really enjoy the presentation and learning all about Western.

Random Student of the Week
Note: The process for choosing our Random Students of the Week is truly random. Our staff rolls a letter-covered die to determine the last name of the featured students. We rotate junior high and high school grade levels weekly (7th one week, then 8th the next; 9th, then 10th, 11th, and 12th) and send an invitation to participate via email to the first student (alphabetically) on the class list. Some students do not respond to our request for information or do not wish to be featured. In that case, we roll another letter and begin the process again.
Haley Adamson
Haley Adamson is a Senior who has been a student at Dryden for almost 4 years. She doesn't really play any sports but she enjoys cooking in her free time. Haley’s favorite thing about Dryden is how diverse it is, many personalities, and that you can be yourself. She likes to spend time with her little sister and brother, and hang out with friends when she is not in school. Haley’s dream career is to be an Executive Chef when she gets older. Haley’s plans after high school are to go into culinary school, and she is trying to find the best one for her. Also, Haley loves going on trips and going outside, she's obsessed with animals (especially dogs), and she also likes to snowmobile.
