Letter from the Head of School
by Kara Lawler
Dear Grier families,
As we begin the last month of the school year, it is now time to turn to the many end of the year celebrations. May is very busy but full of joy! This month, we celebrate Grier and our people in big ways.
We are so excited to share this special place with the world on national television! Recently, Grier debuted on the World's Greatest television show. You can watch the segment by following this link: https://vimeo.com/1178449867?fl=ls&fe=ec
Next week, we celebrate our teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week. Our teachers are nurturing, knowledgeable, and with them, education is transformational, not transactional. Please join me in thanking them if you have a minute to send an email to one or more of them.
Of course, we have various performances ahead, our awards ceremonies, the long-standing You Make a Difference tradition, the prom, and the Senior trip. We culminate this month of celebration with our graduation ceremony. Our graduation is about celebrating not only the soul of Grier, but the souls of our graduates. Anna Quindlen, one of my favorite authors, writes about the soul in her book, A Short Guide to a Happy Life, "You are the only person alive who has the sole custody of your life. Your particular life. Your entire life. Not just your life at a desk, or your life on the bus, or in the car, or at the computer. Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart. Not just your bank account, but your soul." Here at Grier, we celebrate the lives of the hearts of our students each and every day.
This month, please join me in celebration of all that your daughters, our faculty and staff, and Grier in its 173rd year.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
My best,
Kara

Graduation Update
New Update!
May 1, 2026
Dear families,
I can’t believe it, but it is May! It is almost time to celebrate our seniors, and I send this letter as a follow-up to the one sent in January about the festivities. We begin the week with an overnight Senior Trip to Bedford Springs. We leave on Sunday, May 17 at 11:30 a.m. and we will return on Monday, May 18 around 2:00 p.m. The hotel room and dinner at Bedford Springs is paid for as a gift to our seniors! If they would like to book a spa service, they may do so at their own expense. Additionally, on Sunday morning, there are multiple options for breakfast, and that cost will also be their own. Kathryn Barr and I are the chaperones, and we will need a permission form signed in order for your daughter to participate. The permission form must be filled out by May 13 and is linked here: Senior Class Trip 2026 – Fill out form
The week is full of rehearsals and special activities for the seniors with the actual graduation festivities taking place over two days, Friday and Saturday, May 22-23, 2026. Family, teachers, friends, and our beloved seniors all share in this wonderful milestone culminating with commencement on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at 10:00a.m.
Enclosed you will find the following information about the Grier School Commencement:
a. Dress and shoe requirements
b. Graduation photo information
c. Seniors’ departure responsibilities
d. Graduation weekend schedule
e. Hotels and VRBOs close to Grier

“Wild Geese”
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

This is just a reminder that students are required to complete a total of 10 hours for 7th and 8th grade students and 12.5 hours for 9th-12th grade students of community service through the year. At least half of a student’s hours must be earned through Grier sponsored events. Students who enter the year mid-year are only required to complete half of their grade’s required time.
Packing & Shipping
Returning students are permitted to store 6 boxes. Students may count their fridge as one of their boxes. Students may also use 3 compartment bins as one of their boxes. However, those bins may not contain any liquids, must be taped, and appropriately labelled. Neither Walk’s nor the Grier School is responsible for damages that may occur during the storage and moving process of those containers. Stickers for labels will be distributed by Resident Advisors. Boxes for storage may be purchased in the bookstore. These boxes are approximately $7 each and are large.
Boxes for shipping are different dimensions and may also be purchased at the bookstore. Storage boxes may not be used for shipping. Shipping will occur on May 14th and 15th 11:30-4:30; May 18th, 19th, and 20th 11-1 and May 21st 10-2. Shipping must be paid for with cash or a credit card.
Teacher Talk
by Anthony Lang, Dean of Faculty
The green foliage and days of warm sunshine at campus are a sure sign that May has come to Grier School again. This year, students and teachers are once again preparing for AP and final exams, which come very quickly once May begins. Along with exam preparation, there are field trips to different STEM competitions and for the first time ever, the middle school teachers are planning end of year activities for the 5th and 6th graders. It is an exciting time on campus, as everyone works hard together to help the students show off what they have learned through the year. Along with the work and the progress, everyone begins to look back at another great year together and the memories they will take with them into the next one.
Senior Class Rings
We are very excited to offer a senior class ring this year! The classic ring features a timeless design, very similar to the class rings our graduates had decades ago. Featuring a genuine jade center, the ring is set in antique gold. With "Grier School" around the bezel, the inside of the ring allows for custom engraving with your daughter's initials and class year. Our motto, Sana Mens in Corpore Sano, is also engraved inside. Please find the information attached with three options for the gold and your customization preferences. Josten's will handle the ordering and payment but reach out to Kara Lawler with any questions. Kara has sizers in her office if students would like to verify ring size.

Looking Ahead
Looking Ahead to the Class of 2027!
To the parents of the class of 2027:
Rising seniors and their families are asked to begin thinking about senior portraits and baby photos for use in the 2027 yearbook.
Families may submit up to three different portraits if they would like a different photograph used for yearbook, graduation, and Senior Spotlights. Student counsel officers MUST submit at least TWO portraits (one for the senior section of the yearbook and one for use on the student council page).
Portraits need to be up-and-down and not in landscape orientation. We prefer high quality photographs over cell phone images. Selfies will not be approved. You may use your own photographer for senior portraits. Our photography students also love to do portraits for their friends, and they are happy to do so if asked. You can also book Mrs. Fernandes for a senior portrait session as well (there is a fee for her services).
Senior portraits and baby photos can be submitted at the link below. Please use the student’s name in the name of the image and save it as a jpg, jpeg, heic, or png. Please do not send pdfs. We’d like to have these submissions by November 1.

Please, direct questions regarding senior portraits to Christine Fernandes at: cfernandes@grier.org
Yearbook
The Pineneedle is looking for sponsors to help with publication of next year’s yearbook as well as for archiving digital copies for all posterity.
Publication sponsorships are $300 and archive sponsorships are $150. Businesses, individuals, or families will be listed by name/logo in next year’s book.
Archive sponsors will be given choices of publication years left to be digitized, and their name will appear with that digital version of the yearbook as part of our permanent records.
If you are interested in making a donation to this effort, please contact our yearbook advisor, Christine Fernandes, at cfernandes@grier.org and she will relay all pertinent information to you.
Attention parents and family of the Class of 2027! It’s not too early to pre-order a senior ad for the next issue of our yearbook. Senior ads are a way for family members to share photos of their graduate and send them a letter of encouragement and congratulations. We’d like to be able to feature as many senior ads as possible, but to do so, we need to know early how many pages to reserve.
The deadline to place an order for a senior ad is November 1 and the deadline for submitting ads (if we are not designing them for you) is December 1.
SENIOR AD PRICING:
Full Page: $200 | Half Page: $125 | Design Fee: $50 (or send us a Canva link of your self-designed ad)
To pre-order a senior ad, please contact our yearbook advisor, Christine Fernandes, at cfernandes@grier.org

Foxes Den
Greetings from the Athletic Department!
Spring has officially arrived and we are excited to be in full swing with our seasonal activities. Our recent Athletic Banquet was a great success, with 174 in attendance including athletes, parents, coaches, fans and even a special visit from FOXY! Everyone enjoyed an evening of award presentations followed by a delicious buffet. It was truly a wonderful night for all. Outdoor sports are now underway, with tennis, pickle ball and soccer taking full advantage of the beautiful weather. We are also looking forward to opening our pool very soon.

STEM Center Stage
by Dr. Nancy Burke, Director of STEM Education and Science Dept. Chair
April has been such a busy month of STEM activities for Grier students that it’s hard to know where to start, but let’s begin with our school-wide celebration of Earth-Day. We celebrated this important day in true Grier style by working together to improve the environment that surrounds us. Grier students volunteered to remove invasive species, pick-up garbage, and to lay mulch at a number of nearby environmentally sensitive sites. These sites included Historic Fort Roberdeau, Nature Works in Hollidaysburg, and Plum Hollow right here near Grier School. The day was spearheaded and organized by Grier’s Kallie Brubaker, a teacher in the science department and sponsor of the Sustainable Sisters Environmental Club. Every year Ms. Brubaker provides the Grier students with amazing opportunities to both learn about and help protect the environment.
Following this same theme of ecology, I am currently writing this message to you from The Chincoteague Bay Field Station in Virginia. I am here with eight lucky students spending four days getting a close-up look at the study of coastal ecology. We are spending our time on three different coastal islands, Chincoteague, Wallops, and Assateague. Assateague is a dedicated wildlife preserve with a number of species found only on the island, including the famous Assateague ponies. We started our day yesterday by heading out on a research vessel to do water quality testing and to collect organisms to identify in the evening lab (don’t worry all organisms were returned to their habitat the next day). Students next pulled on their waders and did a survey of organisms in the intertidal zone and again collected specimens for identification. Today, we will go to a private beach on Wallops Island which is owned by NASA. There we will learn about the importance of dunes and barrier islands in protection of the mainland. Tomorrow our trip will end with a short hike on Assateague Island to learn about the unique nature of maritime forests. Current research indicates that exposing girls to outdoor experiences is vital for fostering self-confidence, resilience, and positive body image, while also reducing stress and anxiety. Evidence suggests that these experiences help girls develop leadership skills and a "can-do" mindset by overcoming physical challenges. There is nothing like getting out in the field to bring learning to life.
I would like to end this month’s edition of STEM Center Stage by offering my congratulations to one of our Grier students who has demonstrated excellence in pursuing her education in STEM subjects. Olympia Rock has earned a spot in The Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences, which is a 5-week STEM residency program conducted at Carnegie University in Pittsburgh. During this program, students complete rigorous course work in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics while also getting hands-on experience in laboratory skills and research. This is a highly competitive and prestigious opportunity, as all costs for students to attend are completely covered through a variety of grants and corporate donations. The whole Grier community is very proud of Olympia’s accomplishment, additionally, we are pleased that Grier School is an environment where girls can achieve their goals in STEM, because at Grier School girls belong in STEM!

College Counseling Updates
College Counseling Updates
May 1st is National College Decision Day. Seniors celebrated this day by taking a photo on the colonnade in their attending school gear. We are so proud of all the accomplishments this senior class has achieved. We have much to celebrate with them in the coming weeks. We look forward to their graduation ceremony on May 23rd. The college counseling and academic offices will be sending final paperwork to attending universities the week after graduation. The junior class has begun their one on one meetings with Mr. Shelton and Ms. Barr. They will be finalizing an initial college list to research over the summer as well as outlining essays for fall. Mr. Shelton and Ms. Barr are available via email over the summer if questions arise for families.
College Visits
Over the summer, it will be very important for juniors to start visiting colleges they are thinking of applying to. This will help students discover their likes and dislikes regarding campuses and provide an opportunity to speak with admissions officers. It is very important that students begin the visit process during this time. When students return in the fall, they should have a more focused list of schools to apply to.
College Counseling Reading Corner
This month, we would like to recommend and oldy, but a goody for college reading. Colleges that Change Lives was first published in 1996 and has been revised several times since. This text looks at 40 schools spanning the United States in hopes of offering a view of different types and styles of schools beyond the hyped-up lists of mainstream media. The juniors recently visited Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA, which is one of the schools outlined in the text. In the May newsletter, we hope to offer some additional summer reading for students and families to consider.

How to register for TOEFL iBT at Grier School?
Details:
To register for a TOEFL iBT Exam at Grier School’s certified test center (STN11644A), students MUST complete registration by the deadlines provided above—no exceptions. BULK Registration has made updates to the registration requirements making the deadlines very important.
Step 1
· Student needs ETS TOEFL Account information available at registration (Name, ETS ID, etc.).
· No account? Create one.
o Name within account MUST match information on PASSPORT.
o Chinese TOEFL Accounts: Do NOT work in USA. Student MUST create a “US” account in order to test outside of China. Registration in China works differently than test centers outside of the country.
Step 2
· Use the links below for each month’s registration form.
o To register, students MUST use the monthly forms to complete their registration form.
o Information from this form will be used to submit their TOEFL registration through BULK Reg, which Mrs. Hallahan must submit on behalf of each student who registers.
· Registration Forms for 2026-2027 First Semester TOEFL iBT® Dates:
Step 3
· Students will be required to submit information pertaining to their TOEFL Account and upload a copy of their passport and consent form.
Step 4
· Registration is completed through BULK registration, meaning that students fill out an online form provided by Grier School’s Test Coordinator, Olivia Hallahan, and after all information has been collected, Mrs. Hallahan will submit a BULK roster to ETS.
Have questions about testing at Grier School? Reach out to Mrs. Hallahan (ohallahan@grier.org) or when school is in session, students may stop by her office—1st floor classroom level.
