Roosevelt Report
February 2, 2026
Principal Points
Dear Roosevelt Families,
Winter in Michigan is truly something special! I moved here in 2019, and this may be the snowiest winter yet. With the fun and beauty of the season also come a few extra chores—brushing off cars, shoveling sidewalks, bundling up, and allowing extra time in the morning. While these moments can feel challenging, they create meaningful learning opportunities for our children.
At school, winter adds a little extra magic. Outdoor recess (when weather permits) gives students time to move, play, and connect—building snow forts, making tracks in the snow, and laughing with friends. Inside, classrooms are buzzing with seasonal learning, exploration, and problem-solving.
Winter also builds important life skills. Managing boots and zippers, helping with snow chores, and being prepared for the weather all foster responsibility, perseverance, and independence. We see this growth every day as students help one another and take pride in being “winter-ready.”
You can support winter joy by:
-
Sending students dressed for outdoor play
-
Talking about what they enjoy most about winter
-
Celebrating the small moments this season brings
Thank you for helping our students see winter not as something to endure, but as something to embrace. Together, we’re making this season warm, joyful, and full of learning—inside and out!
Warmly and With Tiger Pride,
Mrs. Samouelian

Car Loop- We Need Your Help!
We would like to give a big shout-out to our families who consistently pull all the way up in the car loop—thank you! Your help truly makes a difference.
As a reminder and a favor we are asking of all car loop families: on these bitterly cold days, pulling all the way forward instead of stopping close to the door helps our process move quickly and efficiently. While our cars have heat, our staff and students are working hard outside, and getting students into the warm building as quickly as possible is important for everyone.
To help with this:
Please pull all the way up in the car loop before your child exits the vehicle.
Students only may exit the vehicle in the car loop. This helps ensure safety and keeps traffic moving smoothly.
If you would like to exit your vehicle for a goodbye hug or to walk your child in, please park first. The car loop is designed for quick drop-offs only.
Thank you for your cooperation, patience, and partnership in keeping our students safe and our mornings running smoothly—especially during these cold winter days!

FEBRUARY CHARACTER TRAIT
Confidence is one of the most important skills children develop in elementary school—and families play a powerful role in helping it grow.
-
“I can try.”
-
“It’s okay to make mistakes.”
-
“I can learn and get better.”
Confidence does not mean being perfect or getting everything right. It means feeling safe, supported, and brave enough to try new things. How to help build confidence for your child.
1️⃣ Praise Effort, Not Perfection
Focus on how your child worked, not just the result.
Try saying:
-
“You worked really hard on that.”
-
“I noticed you didn’t give up.”
-
“That was tricky—and you kept trying!”
This teaches children that confidence comes from effort and persistence
.
2️⃣ Normalize Mistakes
Mistakes are a natural and important part of learning.
Helpful phrases:
-
“Everyone makes mistakes—that’s how we learn.”
-
“What did you learn from trying?”
-
“It didn’t work yet, and that’s okay.”
When children see mistakes as normal, they feel safer taking risks.
3️⃣ Encourage Independence
Allow children to try things on their own—even when it takes longer.
Examples:
-
Let them zip their coat or tie their shoes
-
Encourage them to solve small problems before stepping in
-
Give them age-appropriate responsibilities at home
Each small success builds a sense of “I can do this.”
4️⃣ Teach Positive Self-Talk
Children often believe the words they say to themselves.
Help your child replace:
❌ “I can’t do this.”
With:
✅ “This is hard, but I can try.”
✅ “I’m still learning.”
Practice these phrases together—especially before homework or new activities.
5️⃣ Ask Confidence-Building Questions
Instead of:
-
“Did you get it right?”
Try:
-
“What was challenging today?”
-
“What are you proud of?”
-
“What did you try even though it was hard?”
These questions help children reflect on growth rather than perfection.
6️⃣ Model Confidence Yourself
Children learn confidence by watching the adults around them.
You might say:
-
“I made a mistake, but I’ll try again.”
-
“This is new for me, but I’m learning.”
-
“I asked for help when I needed it.”
Your words show your child that confidence is about trying, not being perfect.
7️⃣ Celebrate Small Wins
Confidence grows in small moments:
-
Trying a new food
-
Reading a tricky word
-
Joining or participating in a new activity
-
Practicing something again
Take time to notice and celebrate these everyday victories.
Remember: Confidence is built one small brave moment at a time.

Kindergarten Families
Time is running out to sign up for the Competitive Edge Savings Program for your kindergarten student! This is a FREE program offered to families of LPS kindergarten students. The Foundation will designate them as beneficiaries of the Foundation’s educational savings account. The Foundation contributes seed money and those funds grow throughout the student’s LPS educational career. Upon graduation from an LPS high school, the funds may be used for any accredited post-secondary education or skills training program.
Online form is open for submissions. The 2025-26 LPS kindergarten students have until February 1, 2026 to register – do not miss out on this wonderful program that is totally free to you!
