The MMES Buzz
News from Manchester Memorial Elementary School!

Principal's Note
Dear Memorial Families,
I am so excited to finally roll out PickUp Patrol (PUP) to our families! You should have received an email today to set up your account, and a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Schmidt for pre-loading all of the default dismissal plans into the system.
Once you have an account set up, please take a look at the default dismissal plan for each of your children and make any permanent adjustments needed to their default plan for each day of the week. This will be how we dismiss your child if you do not make any changes. You can make changes for a one-day change or even for multiple days/weeks at a time. This will be a huge time saver for all of you at home and for our staff as well. We have been using it internally and it has worked really well so I am happy to give all of you access to it as well. Thank you MMPTO!
A few notes:
- You can now report absences right in PUP if your child is ill or absent for any reason.
- This will avoid us calling home as we will expect the absence.
- You can also report a late arrival if you know ahead of time that your child will be tardy.
- This will avoid us calling home as we will expect the late arrival.
- You can manage and change your child's daily dismissal procedure right in PUP.
- Please note that ALL changes in dismissal need to be entered by 2:00PM, so please plan ahead :).
- You no longer need to email Mrs. Schmidt, your child's teacher, and Nurse Morrissey for absences, tardies, and dismissal changes as long as you use PUP to communicate those changes!
My hope is that this tool will alleviate some stress from the busy lives of families while decreasing the human error component with our former method of communicating these changes to our students' day.
If you have questions or need assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Schmidt or myself. We are here for you!

Have a great weekend!

Art in the Spotlight
The students in grades pre-K through 5th grade art class recently completed drawings that will be printed on all sorts of cool items for purchase through the Square 1 Art fund-raising program. Square 1 offers families the option to purchase gift items with their child's art printed on them. The MMES PTO and Friends of Essex Elementary school will be able to receive a portion of funds from the orders. These funds can be used for enrichment opportunities and items needed for the schools. The Square 1 order form packets will be passed out to students during their art class next week. All items ordered will be mailed to the student's home.
In addition to Square 1 Art lessons,
students in PreK to 5th grade have been learning about clay and how to make pinch pots, funny face mugs, bowls, and hand shaped soap dishes.
Once all clay items have been fired, the students will begin glazing them.
Look for brightly colored ceramic projects on display within the upcoming weeks.
High School Music Tour Stops at Memorial
Memorial grade 3 to 5 students attended an assembly this Thursday highlighting our high school music program. The high school pep band performed selections under the direction of our new middle and high school band director Mr. Harry Wagg. The music was selected from a few pieces used at our home football games. They performed the NFL song and Crazy Train which really got the audience going! Our middle school chorus director Mr. Ben Icenogle directed the high school chorus and the acapella group "The Sound Waves". Their performance ended with a selection from the musical "Shrek" which the middle and high school music theater group will be performing this November.
This was a great opportunity for our elementary students to see and hear what they can accomplish when they continue their musical studies whether it be instrumental or vocal music or both! We hope that you have an opportunity to hear these groups at either a football game or the musical in November.
Lastly, if anyone in 4th or 5th grade has an interest in joining one of our musical ensembles, it's not too late.

Managing School-Related Anxiety for Elementary School Aged Children
By Dr. Gallo, Ph.D.
Now that the academic year is in full swing, it’s common for children to experience anxiety about some aspects of school, such as an academic subject, shifting peer dynamics, or riding the school bus. Anxiety is a normal human emotion, just like happiness or sadness, and is not necessarily a sign of a bigger problem. As caregivers, there are things you can do to support your children when you are noticing signs of anxiety or worry:
- Showing empathy and validating their emotional experience—this doesn’t mean you have to agree with their behavior! Try to avoid blaming them or criticizing them for feeling nervous or scared. Express confidence in their ability to handle situations that might be eliciting anxiety. Example: “I understand that you feel anxious about going to school. Let’s talk about it. I’m here for you and I know you can do this.”
- You can teach your child ways to cope with situations that might make them feel nervous or worried, and you can model those coping skills yourself.
- For example, if you notice negative self-talk or a lot of “what if” questions, you can teach them to notice those thoughts and encourage them to think about other ways things could turn out.
- You can model that it’s normal to feel worried by talking about worries that you have experienced and how you have coped with them.
- Child-friendly grounding or breathing exercises can be found online and can give elementary school children a tangible task to help them calm their bodies when anxiety starts to ramp up.
- Remember to praise brave actions—positive reinforcement is a very effective way to encourage behavior that you want to see more often.
These strategies can go a long way in managing anxiety in your elementary school student, but if anxiety or worries start to get in the way of your child’s daily functioning or enjoyment of their activities, you may want to seek out support from a mental health professional.

What's the Buzz with Ms. X?
Happy Friday MMES! There are so many exciting things coming up in these last weeks of October. Next week we have the Fall Book Fair and Halloween! If your student/family need support accessing the book fair, please reach out to me or Mrs. Silag. This month is also National Bullying Prevention Month! Though October is the designated month to prevent bullying and promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion – it truly is something that we should be working towards every day! It’s important that we know what bullying actually is and not confuse it with social conflict.
MERSD’s Bullying Prevention Policy is right on the school website and provides us with the Massachusetts Law definition of bullying ( M.G.L. 71, s 37O). The key points that differentiate bullying from conflict are its’ repeated nature, power imbalance (real or perceived) and intentional aggression. Bullying can be physical, verbal, emotional or nonverbal, and/or cyber related.
Now sometimes conflict can include aggressive behaviors between 2 people, unkind words, physical behavior, and teasing among others – all of which is NEVER okay. They cause also recur among individuals and the key difference is that both parties can express their views and experiences and there is no imbalance of power. Many times, social conflicts can be resolved between the individuals or with the help of friends, trusted adults, and school staff. While conflict is challenging and difficult, it is also an important lesson especially for our elementary age students as it allows them to work on and develop important life skills including perspective taking, problem solving, and communication.
If you have any questions or concerns about this topic, or about anything for the counselor – feel free to reach out!
