Classes & Clubs

Students in ART 358: History of Modern Design and SOC 351: Home and Society recently visited the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY. Dr. Antje Gamble, associate professor of art history, and Dr. Ali Hendley, associate professor of sociology, coordinated the visit to complement the content in their respective classes.

"The goal of our visit was to see works we only see in digital images in person. Especially with craft media, the materiality of the objects is very important," said Dr. Gamble. "Not only this, but students were able to engage with the various ways of making that encompass the genre of 'quilting' and how various themes can be explored through that version of design."

Before their visit, students in SOC 351 had been discussing domestic arts/crafts and other forms of domestic labor. "These activities have traditionally been devalued, trivialized, and assumed to be apolitical," said Dr. Hendley. "They are often not seen as 'real' work or as Art with a capital 'A. However, the work displayed at the Quilt Museum clearly counters these beliefs. These quilts require a great amount of time and skill, and many relay strong political messages."

Majors and Minors

Designed to help students stand out to employers and add skills to their resume, the Business Ethics Certificate provides students with a credential they can put on their CV and a foundation in critical thinking, oral and written communication, and confidence in the skills that will be most useful to students in the business world. The certificate takes 12 hours to complete.

The business ethics certificate is a particularly good fit for students in the College of Business, especially those in programs such as Accounting, Business Administration, Management, and Marketing. The course hours are designed to fit into other Business majors with minimal other requirements. All but one course in the program satisfy other requirements, meaning that Business students only have to take one “extra” class.

However, the certificate complements other majors and programs outside of the College of Business, too. "More and more employers are looking for people with a strong foundation in the 'evergreen' skills like clear writing and communication, ability to analyze abstract and complex problems, confidence working in groups, and critical thinking," says Dr. Michelle Panchuk, assistant professor of philosophy. "Such skills are emphasized in all of the courses students will take with the Philosopher and Business professors in this certificate."

For more information about the certificate, contact Dr. Panchuk at mpanchuk@murraystate.edu.
