A Note from Dr. Neubeck

Every day within our schools, so many events happen that allow students to learn and demonstrate their passions and talents. This past week was a first for Byron Public Schools and it represented a culmination of the six "Cs" in our Profile of a Graduate. Thirty-five high school seniors presented their Life Plans to staff, students, family and visitors. The "Profile of a Graduate" is the guiding vision of our system, with its 6 "Cs", and the Life Plan is a reflection and a presentation that represents the student's learning over their years in Byron Public Schools. While students go through our system, they will do projects and assignments that are meaningful to them and they will collect them in an online portfolio. During their junior year in high school, the students work with staff to begin developing this presentation by having students reflect on the 6 "Cs", their strengths, and their future plans after high school.

It was truly amazing to hear what the students have learned about themselves, how they have grown as young adults, and their plans after high school. When given the opportunity to pursue their passions and tell their story, students do amazing work. I personally asked them what they were going to do for fun in their Life Plan because work is really not work if you are able to have fun. I also asked them what they learned about their strengths and challenges as they get ready for life after high school. I really enjoyed conversing with these young people. This was one day of presenting. Three more sessions will happen yet this year with every senior having the opportunity to present their Life Plan. After talking with these seniors, I am even more proud to say that I am a member of Byron Schools and community.

Cows, Farms and Fields, by Luke Bjellum

Congratulations to Luke Bjellum, grade 12, whose photography piece was selected for the My District, My Minnesota program. Students were invited to submit photos or drawings of life in their district. Each Senator then chose the one they felt was the best representation of their district. Luke's photo was chosen to represent District 24. It will hang in the Minnesota Senate Building for the rest of 2023. Luke is a student of Mrs. Boettcher's Photography 1 art class.

Untitled, by Jesse Pankratz

Congratulations to Jesse Pankratz, grade 12, whose photography piece was also selected for the My District, My Minnesota program. The plan was for each Senator to choose the artwork they felt was the best representation of their district. While most districts had submissions, there were a few that didn’t have any. Jesse's artwork was used to represent District 19 and will hang in the Minnesota Senate building for the remainder of 2023. Jesse is a student in Mrs. Boettcher's Photography 1 art class.
