Red Ribbon Week
Rett Syndrome Awareness Month
October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month. Rett Syndrome is a rare neurological and developmental disorder that primarily affects girls and typically becomes noticeable as a child grows and develops.
Rett Syndrome is especially meaningful to our Chaparral community because one of our very own Hawks lives with Rett Syndrome. We would love for our entire Hawk community to come together to show our love and support for her while also helping raise awareness.
Please join us by WEARING PURPLE on Tuesday, October 27!
Let’s fill Chaparral with purple and show what it means to be a community that supports, celebrates, and cares for every Hawk!
Halloween Parade Information
Parents we ask that you stand in the grassy area marked for you. Grade levels, starting with 5th grade, will begin to march the track around 9am. See you there!
Halloween Costume Guidelines
Hawks,
Halloween is almost here, and we’re excited to see our Hawks have some fun and show off their creativity! Students are welcome to wear costumes to school this coming Friday (10/30), but please help us keep the day safe, comfortable, and appropriate for all of our students.
When choosing a costume, please follow these guidelines:
• No masks, full face paint or costumes that cover a student’s face.
• No weapons of any kind, including toy or pretend weapons such as guns, knives, swords, axes, or similar items.
• No blood, gore, or costumes that may be frightening or inappropriate for an elementary school setting.
• Costumes should allow students to safely participate in their normal school day, including walking around campus, sitting in class, and using the restroom.
• Please remember that we have students as young as four years old on our campus. Costumes should be fun and school-appropriate for Hawks of all ages.
We love the creativity and excitement that Halloween brings to Chaparral and appreciate your help in making it a fun and safe day for everyone.
Happy Halloween, Hawks!
Honoring our Veterans with Field of Flags
We want to invite our community members to join the Chaparral Staff in honoring our American Veterans by donating and participating in the Field of Flags program.
This Veterans Day, Chaparral is proud to honor the brave men and women who have served our country by participating in DAV’s Field of Flags.
Each flag represents one veteran and symbolizes our gratitude for their sacrifice and service. ❤️🤍💙
Our goal is to fill our field with American flags in honor of local veterans! Every donation helps support DAV’s life-changing services for ill and injured veterans and their families.
Let’s come together as a Chaparral community to show our veterans just how much we appreciate them.
For every $250 raised, we will receive 24 flags to put on display on our campus for our November 6th Community Gathering. Our Chaparral Staff has already raised enough for 48 flags! If you would like to donate and help us fill our gates and fields with American Flags we would love it!

(Donation deadline is Thursday, October 29th)

Every flag. Every veteran. Every sacrifice matters.
Green Envelope Week Results are in!
An enormous THANK YOU goes out to our families and community for supporting us through last month's Green Envelope Week! Through the generosity of our community, we were able to raise over $90,000!!!!!!
Every penny of that money will go directly to Chaparral and our students through the funding of our PE, Garden and Impact teachers. It will also go toward fun activities like our recent Boogie Bash, movie nights and more! This incredible amount of generosity is why our students are able to receive the top notch education that they deserve!
Incredible Academic Achievements are Happening at Chaparral
Earlier this month, the California Department of Education released last year’s California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results for schools across the state. We are incredibly proud to share that Chaparral students earned the highest performance level—Blue—in all three core academic areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science!
This achievement reflects the hard work of our students, the dedication of our teachers and staff, and the continued support of our Chaparral families. Way to go, Hawks!

Parking Lot Safety
Parents and Families,
We need everyone’s help keeping our students, families, and staff safe as you travel to and from school and through our parking lots. With more than 800 children arriving and leaving school each day, please anticipate that drop-off and pick-up will take some time. A little patience goes a long way toward keeping everyone safe.
Please remember:
Staff parking lots are for staff only. Please do not park in these lots, even for drop off and pick up.
Use designated drop-off and pick-up areas only. Students should always be dropped off and picked up safely along designated curbs.
Extensive Supports curb spaces are reserved for those students and families. If your child is not part of our Extensive Supports program, please do not pull into, stop, or park in these designated spaces.
Please follow all traffic laws and directions. Rushing through lines, illegally passing other vehicles, or dropping students off away from a curb creates unsafe situations and increases the chance that someone could get hurt.
Slow down, slow down, and slow down! Saving a minute or two is never worth putting a child, family member, or staff member at risk.
We know arrival and dismissal can be busy, and we truly appreciate everyone planning ahead, being patient, and doing their part to keep Chaparral safe.
Thank you for putting safety first!
Melody Makers - No Parking Lot Parking
Families who are dropping off for Melody Makers before school, please remember there is no parking in our staff parking lot. Thank you for your support.

Visitor Passes Ending - Volunteer Information
At the beginning of each school year, while parents and family members are completing their volunteer clearance, we allow individuals to sign in as visitors when helping on campus. However, visitor status is intended for occasional or one-time volunteer situations.
If you plan to volunteer regularly on campus, whether in a classroom, the garden, at school events, or in any other capacity, we ask that you complete at least your Level 1 Volunteer Clearance as soon as possible.
Thank you for helping us keep our campus safe and for all you do to support Chaparral!

Parent Resource Guide
We understand that being a parent comes with a lot of information to navigate — and too often, schools and districts fall short in providing it all in one convenient place.
At Chaparral, we’re working to change that. We've created a Parent Resource Guide designed to consolidate essential information and make it easier for you to stay informed and engaged.
You can access the guide here: PARENT RESOURCE GUIDE

Important Resources & Reminders
School Breakfast and Lunch
PUSD provides breakfast and lunch to all students free of charge pursuant to the California Universal Meals Program. Free meals are available to all families, regardless of their free or reduced-price meal eligibility status. Breakfast service will begin at 8:25 am and end at 8:40 am. Students will report directly to the playground after eating breakfast. Students not eating breakfast need to arrive when the playground opens at 8:25 am.
Meal program details are provided on the Food and Nutrition Department website at PUSD Food and Nutrition. Families are still encouraged to submit a school meal application for free and reduced-priced meal benefits because this information may be used for other programs such as Federal and State funding for your school, reduced registration fees for academic tests, free or discounted fees for bus passes, ESS childcare, and athletic programs, discounted rates for internet service and many more! The application can be found online at https://www.myschoolapps.com/ . Applications must be submitted on an annual basis.
Off Campus Independent Study
Obviously, the best environment for any student to learn is the school environment. Whenever possible, families are strongly encouraged to avoid taking vacations and other trips that results in their students missing extended periods of time from school.
However, when these trips are unavoidable, parents can request an OCIS contract. Details of OCIS contracts can be found below.
Off Campus Independent Study (OCIS) Contracts
This contract allows the student to complete work that he/she would be doing if they were in class and helps the school to continue to receive funding from the state. The student needs to work with his/her teachers closely to submit the assignments.
The threshold for implementing an OCIS contract is limited to a minimum of 3 days through a maximum of 14 school days. The 14-school day limit for OCIS contracts is cumulative for the entire school year.
At least 5 school days of notice is required to set up an OCIS Contract.
*A family who plans to keep their student out of school beyond the 20 days must enroll their child in Poway Home Education Program (PHEP: TK through 8th grade)
Please refer to the PUSD website for more information and contact the student’s counselor.
