Pi Day is sweet as 3.14159265359

Students around the district celebrated Pi (π) Day last week with a variety of activities including, yes, pie.

Pi Day is observed on March 14 to honor the irrational number 3.14, a mathematical constant representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It's an irrational number, meaning its decimal representation goes on forever without repeating. Pi Day was founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw, who was on staff at the Exploratorium, a science museum in San Francisco.

Each year in Mr. James Wilcox's math classes at Davison High School, students celebrate by participating in a Pi memorization challenge and with baked goods. Lots of baked goods. The top two memorizers were:

  • Madelyn Anderson - 372 digits (4th all-time)
  • Jaxson Kaszyca - 305 digits (6th all-time)

Sixth graders in Mrs. Ami Unger's classroom at Hahn Intermediate celebrated with a lot of fun activities, including making Pi Day bracelets, solving puzzles, playing Pi-themed games and enjoying an apple pie from the local bakery. Just down the hallway, students in Mrs. Katie Gist's classroom spent the morning measuring the diameter and circumferences of paper pies and taste-testing oatmeal cream pies.

And don't think Pi Day is just for the math lovers. Davison Middle School Teacher Mrs. Tammy Fellows teaches English Language Arts but that didn't stop her from coming up with some ways to celebrate the day.

"I wanted to show students that math and English Language Arts are not always independent of the other," she said. "So, for my 8th Grade English Language Arts class, I created a Pi game relating Pi, the calculations and the definitions, figurative language and comprehension. I hope my 8th graders liked it."

We put together a short video (link below) showcasing some of the events that took place as part of the celebration of Pi Day.

Davison students on championship girls hockey team

Four students from Davison Middle School and one from Hahn Intermediate belong to the championship 12/14U division Michigan Girl's Hockey League team.

Last fall, the first girls' hockey team out of Crystal Fieldhouse in Burton was formed, according to Rachele Hazel, a Davison High School Class of 2003 graduate) and Girls Director for the Greater Flint Hockey Association (GFHA). Included on that team are: Ellison Hazel (7th grade), Lexxi Boros (7th grade), Rylee McKerracher (7th grade), Myla Ojeda (6th grade) and Madelyn Gebhardt (8th grade). Nine other girls from several local districts completed the team, under the direction of Head Coach Keith Hazel (also a DHS alum - Class of 2000).

"This last season was over half of the girls' first time ever playing hockey," Rachele Hazel said. "These girls put in an extraordinary amount of work to not only learn to skate and learn the game of hockey but also to come together as a team and grow together as sisters. Week in and week out they showed a tremendous amount of grit and persistence.'

Hazel said the accomplishment of securing the championship means so much more than just a trophy and a banner.

"It represents the growth of girls' hockey in Flint, the resilience of our team, and the opportunities we are creating for young female athletes in the area," Mrs. Hazel said. "Our Lady Cardinals are part of a pivotal moment in history in Genesee County and the surrounding areas. They didn't just work hard to build a team-- they've built a legacy."

Spring season sign-ups are now open for 10u, 12u and 14u and an additional sign up will be open mid-summer for the upcoming fall/winter season.

Art students view exhibitions and create their own masterpieces at FIA

Davison High School art students recently visited the Flint Institute of Arts to view the current exhibitions of two preeminent African American collage artists and then had the opportunity to create a little art of their own.

Art teachers Mr. Ryan Kelsey, Mrs. Bobbie McAllister and Mrs. Erin Sanderson accompanied 70 students to check out the exhibitions featuring Romare Bearden and Judy Bowman.

Afterward, students split into groups and collaborated on original collages of their own. Influenced by the work of Bowman, students created pieces based on the theme “musician.” As a special surprise, Judy Bowman - who lives and works in Detroit - saw their creations and commented to our art students, “This is a beautiful collaboration!”

Students also had the opportunity to view the rest of the museum collection, and were even able to watch Los Angeles-based artist Cedric Mitchell creating some of his original glass art in the hot shop.

Mrs. Sanderson said the Davison Art Department would like to thank the FIA Director of Education Matthew Osmon and Janice McCoy from the FIA Art School for allowing them to work toward their goal of increasing opportunities for students to engage in art outside of the classroom, as well as for giving studio spaces to use on this trip.

Reading Month Reading Month

Hahn/DMS name Bookmark contest winners

Each year during Reading Month, the Hahn/Davison Middle School Library staff organizes a bookmark contest for students. This year's theme was "Ride the wave to the Book Fair."

In the past, library paraprofessionals judged contest entries but this year Food Services staff were asked to take on the job.

"They really took the job seriously and after a long debate came out with our winners," said Mrs. Lisa Johnson, Library Paraprofessional. "The Kitchen staff from the Middle School judged Hahn's entries and Hahn's Kitchen staff judged the entries from the Middle School."

And the winners are:

  • Fifth Grade: Adilynn Green, first place; Raelyn Simpson, second place; Wren Miller, third place
  • Sixth grade: Avery Johnson, first place; Ellie Beckner, second place; Mackenzie Riley, third place
  • Seventh grade: Khloie Beasley, first place; Ruby Hollenback, second place; Peyton Van Jeune, third place
  • Eighth grade: Sophie Leach, first place; Audriana Turner, second place; Cadence Chambers, third place

DHS, DAE name March Students of the Month

The following students have been selected as Students of the Month for March at Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education.

9th Grade - William Rice

Nominated by: Ms. Amanda Bailey

Will is a kind and considerate young man. He is a focused and goal-oriented student who is able to contribute in class in many positive ways. I've seen him be helpful to others as well as push himself to stay focused and achieve academic success. Will is such a great leader and is a proud worthwhile representative of DHS.

10th Grade - Sofia Kennedy

Nominated by: Mrs. Kristin Baker

Sofia is truly a student that you can rely on and will support others in the classroom. I nominate Sofia because she truly demonstrates all the aspects of the Cardinal Code and does it with a smile.

11th Grade - Gage McCann

Nominated by: Mr. James Wilcox

Mr. McCann is a standout student. He is one of the very few students who transitioned from the "regular track" of the math curriculum to the Honors track. He doubled up math his sophomore year, to make himself eligible to take HonorsPreCalc as a junior and APCalculus as a senior. Not many students do this, but he wanted to further himself. He is a stellar worker who prioritizes his studies, and tries very hard. He is committed to excellence, respect and kindness, and will do whatever it takes to succeed. He is an accomplished musician, and continues to lead by example in the band as well.

12th Grade - Brenda Reece

Nominated by: Ms. Jodi Aboneaaj

I cannot say enough amazing things about Brenda and the hard work and dedication she shows toward her school work. I have had the pleasure of teaching Brenda in Accounting and Criminal Law. Her excitement for each subject is contagious and she approaches each assignment/lecture with enthusiasm and vigor. She holds herself to a high standard academically and she can often be found helping other students, always using encouraging words and lending a helping hand. I do not think Brenda understands how much I have enjoyed teaching her this year, and how excited I am to watch her succeed past high school. The sky is the limit for her!!! Keep up the good work Brenda!!

DAE: Ian Locklear

Nominated by: Mrs. Amanda Mobley & Mrs. Nicole Powers

Mrs. Mobley wrote, Ian is an active participant in Biology and is always kind, attentive and helpful. He has helped with labs by bringing in supplies needed - like pond water so we could look at live organisms. He continues to be a responsible and respectful student. He has a strong work ethic and completes quality work. I can count on him to participate in all activities of the class and he is a positive benefit/addition to Davison Alternative. As he continues to grow he will no doubt be a leader by the time he is a senior. I notice that students already listen to what he is saying - whether in class/group/partner discussions. Ian seems to be well-respected by his peers.

Mrs. Powers wrote, Ian is new to DAE this year, and since 1st trimester, Ian has proven to be respectful, hardworking and courteous to everyone around him. Ian has conveyed interest in an automotive career and has the goal of obtaining his credits to attend GCI. Ian's motivation and perseverance to be successful is an example of the qualities we look for at DAE. I believe Ian is the student that will achieve his goals
