Classroom innovation
Red Wing High School special education teacher Darcy Bock and student complete a job chart in the River Bluff Education Center PAES lab, which has five simulated workplace settings.
PAES lab pays off for students
Every afternoon several Red Wing students report to the Practical Assessment Exploration System or PAES lab at River Bluff Education Center. The classroom comprises five workstations where students learn skills they will need in the workplace.
Work begins by students pulling a job card, heading to the designated workstation, gathering any necessary materials and then reading step-by-step instructions. Before tackling the job, students must explain how they must complete the job.
“Sometimes they don’t always do the job that way,” teacher Liz Diggins said. “Maybe they were supposed to measure in inches and did it in centimeters. If that’s the case, I do a corrective teaching and have them do it a second time.”
Special Education Assistant Director Nicole Bolduan said students learn about soft skills, too, such as arriving on time, wearing appropriate clothing for the job and being prepared to work.
Photo: PAES lab job cards provide step-by-step instructions, sometimes starting with proper attire such as putting on a protective apron.
Jobs are rated 1 to 6. Throughout the semester, students encounter up to 264 job activities or tasks in five general career fields. Those fields and a sampling of tasks under each are:
- Business/marketing: Making change, collating, and working a cash register.
- Computer/technology: Entering data, creating PowerPoint presentations, working with digital photos.
- Consumer/service: Preparing food, measuring cloth, and using a sewing machine.
- Construction/industrial: Using wrenches and bolts, making metal projects, and completing electrical projects.
- Processing/production: Assembling with bolts, using thread design and creating peg design.
“Do they do all the jobs correctly? No,” she said. But the data collected over the semester – the number of attempts that it takes, independence level, and time or completion – shows that students are gaining and growing.
“Sometimes a student’s aptitude is awesome in one area, but they don’t like it. Sometimes what they love is something they’re not fantastic at, and sometimes those things come together,” Diggins said. “That’s really the end game: Giving them jobs along with problem-solving skills, and then working through the tasks without me holding the hand the whole way through.”
Trial and error can be a new form of learning for these students who might have a paraprofessional sitting right next to them in a traditional classroom. The PAES lab provides valuable experience in being unsuccessful.
“That’s life. We all have failed,” Diggins said. “But working through that and learning what tools we have, we can problem solve.”
Flight Path 2030
Wingers headed to Milwaukee School of Engineering for summer learning through Flight Path 2030 are (front row, from left) Alyssa Rice, Beatrix Lahammer, Piper Ryan, Kamari Williams, (back row) Clare Guse, Bentley Ricks, Marek Sparby, Sterling Gadient and Gavin Plath.
Students awarded summer STEM scholarships
EARLY MOMENTUM TOWARD FLIGHT PATH 2030
Nine Wingers will board Amtrak for Milwaukee School of Engineering this summer where they will attend academic camps that delve into STEM careers.
Sterling Gadient, Clare Guse, Beatrix Lahammer, Gavin Plath, Alyssa Rice, Bentley Ricks, Piper Ryan, Marek Sparby and Kamari Williams will each spend an all-expenses paid week at MSOE. The camps include Explore, Women in Technology, Focus on Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Focus on Computer Engineering and Focus on Electrical Engineering.
Dwight Diercks, a Red Wing High School and Milwaukee School of Engineering graduate, and his wife Dian, are providing the scholarships. The camps are part of their long-term commitment to help transform his hometown district into a center of excellence in computer science, data science, and artificial intelligence.
Students in their applications had to outline career goals and describe how their preferred camp fits into future plans. Diercks reviewed the applications and awarded the scholarships, creating a connection between the high school and the college he views as instrumental to his successful career with Nvidia.
The Flight Path 2030 initiative began in August 2025. That pledge came on the heels of a major donation that has made MSOE an AI education leader.
