Welcome to our libraries!

Each library in our district is a warm and welcoming space. Each is staffed with a Library Paraprofessional and managed by our District Library Media Specialist, Kathy Retzke.

Cooperative Opportunity to Bring More Books to our Students! Cooperative Opportunity to Bring More Books to our Students!

If you had the chance to join us for our International Children’s Day celebration on Saturday, April 18th, you likely saw tables overflowing with books for our students to take home. We believe that access to books builds readers, and helping our students grow their personal libraries at home is a vital part of our mission. But where did all these books come from? The answer is a beautiful combination of community generosity and state-wide support.

1. From Our Community

For the past six months, our dedicated volunteers have been working closely with the Whitewater Community Space. They have hand-selected treasures from community donations, ensuring these books find a second life in the hands of our students. It is a true cycle of neighbors helping neighbors.

2. From Our School Libraries

It might surprise you to learn that some of these books come directly from our school shelves! Every year, we "weed" our collection—much like a garden—to ensure we are providing students with the most current and engaging materials. Because library space is limited, we carefully review our collections to see which books haven't been checked out recently. If a book is still in great condition but hasn't found an audience lately, we send it to a new home during events like this to make room for fresh arrivals.

3. The Common School Fund: A Wisconsin Legacy

We are incredibly fortunate to live in a state that prioritizes literacy through the Common School Fund. Established in 1848, this fund was created from state land sales and continues to grow through various state fees and unclaimed property. The sole purpose of this fund is to provide school libraries with the resources they need. Every district in Wisconsin receives an annual distribution based on its population of residents aged 4 to 20. This funding allows Mrs. Retzke and our "Library Squad" to fill our shelves with the very best new titles, ensuring our collection stays modern, relevant, and exciting for all students.

  • The Reese Brantmeier Project, supported by the Patrick Ryan Memorial Tennis Foundation of Janesville, is thrilled to announce a new partnership with Whitewater area libraries. This initiative aims to make the sport of tennis accessible to everyone by offering complete tennis kits available for public checkout.
  • A Vision for the Community The project is the fulfillment of a long-held childhood goal for 20-year-old Reese Brantmeier (picture #1). Reese’s mission is to create opportunities for the Whitewater community to engage with the sport she loves. Her journey began with a successful fundraising campaign that secured $160,000 to reconstruct the unplayable courts at her alma mater, Washington Elementary (picture #2). Following the grand opening celebration this past July, Reese pledged to launch a second phase: providing everyone the chance to try tennis at no cost.
  • Combining Passions: Tennis and Literacy By combining her own personal funds with donor contributions, Reese has made tennis equipment available for free checkout at all Whitewater Unified School District (WWUSD) libraries and the Whitewater Public Library. This partnership perfectly bridges Reese’s two greatest passions—tennis and reading.
  • What’s in the Bag? Beginning this May, students and community members can check out a customized tennis kit (picture #3), which includes:
Two high-quality rackets
New tennis balls
A laminated “Tennis Basics” guide covering rules and scoring
  • A Lifelong Sport for Everyone Through this initiative, Reese hopes to spark a lifelong interest in tennis for both children and adults. Whether you are a total beginner or looking to get back on the court, the Reese Brantmeier Project ensures that financial barriers won't stand in the way of a game.

Meeting the Needs of our Community! Meeting the Needs of our Community!

Table full of books, some are in Spanish and some are bilingual in both Spanish and English

As our district evolves, so does our commitment to providing an inclusive and effective learning environment for all 1,800+ of our students. With approximately 40% of our population now identifying as Spanish-speaking, we are intentionally diversifying our library resources. Thanks to Melania Argueta Borchert, our district's Multilingual Service Coordinator each library received a bundle of beautiful new books to add to our library collections. By integrating Spanish and bilingual titles, we are ensuring our newcomers have the comfort and tools they need to achieve English proficiency. Simultaneously, we are opening doors for our English-speaking students to develop bilingual literacy—a skill that will serve them for a lifetime. We believe that when every student sees themselves reflected on our shelves, our entire community grows stronger together, "All Means All."
