Google Takeout
With the end of the year right around the corner, it’s never a bad time to start thinking about your student creating a backup of their Google data for their 24-25 Google files . Seniors graduating, students moving to tech school, etc. happen every year. Students can go to takeout.google.com to create a personal backup of files that they want in an easy, clickable fashion.
Once you open Takeout.google.com you can choose the data you want to backup to a personal computer, google drive, or other external storage device.
Click the deselect all option in the top right corner and then choose any piece of data that you want to back up. Typical student backups consist of items such as assignments, classroom, chrome bookmarks, drive and mail.
We do not keep student access open to Google past the start of the new school year for those students who are graduating or moving to another school system, so we highly recommend backing up in this manner or any other manner to keep any files of work you want to keep if you are graduating and or moving to another school system or if you just want to keep an organized backup system of your many years in New Milford Public Schools.
Food & Nutrition News
Did you know that Connecticut has over 5500 farms and several of the farms are in our backyard? The Food & Nutrition Department has been supporting local farms and providing farm fresh produce on the school lunch line for over 15 years. One of our missions is to provide a variety of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis and to expose students to a wide range of vegetables/fruits grown in our state.
On May 12th we had a “Sample Day” and “Make Today a Try Day” in the SNIS cafeteria. A Strawberry & Spinach Salad was sampled by approximately 253 students. The spinach was from a local farm (Earth Palate) in Warren. The students were excited and willing to participate. 92% of the students either loved it or liked it, which was wonderful. Due to such a positive response, students will see the Spinach & Strawberry Salad on future menus
We are also getting fresh lettuce from Barkley’s Backyard Garden (Hill & Plain Garden). The students recently harvested some greens and provided the cafeteria with some beautiful lettuce that the kitchen staff used in a salad to serve with the meals. Spring is here and the department is always happy to incorporate fresh, local produce into the school meals.

SMS Music Department Year in Review 🎵🎶
SMS Music Department!
What a year it’s been for our SMS musicians! Congratulations to Mrs. Beddows, Mr. Polhemus, and Mr. Mason for another extraordinary year in the SMS Music Department. Here is a year in review from the SMS Music Department!
SMS Chorus Groups and SMS Voices
Mrs. Beddows, SMS 6th, 7th, and 8th grade choruses and Voices were busy to say the least! In addition to their Winter and Spring concerns, our choral students also performed at the Veterans Day assembly, and throughout the greater New Milford community! Below are pictures and a list of choral performances!
November: Veterans Day Assembly and Northern Regionals Audition
December: Winter chorus concerts, SMS Voices perform at Mayor Bass’s Annual Holiday Christmas Party and members of 7th grade chorus spent an afternoon at Chestnut Grove Senior Living
February: Joint Concert with New Milford High School
March: Northern Regionals Music Festival where Jackson Borges, Jaxson Gissen, Melyna Van Dyke-Overthrow, Rebecca Kachonik, and Rowan Cotter gain acceptance into the festival.
April: Another visit to Chestnut Grove and 6th grade chorus mentoring visit to Northville
May: Spring Concerts for chorus groups with special SNIS collaboration with our 6th grade chorus, and a culminating chorus concert for 7th and 8th grade choruses at NMHS!
SMS Bands and SMS Orchestra
Mr. Polhemus and Mr. Mason and the SMS Bands and SMS Orchestra have put their talent on display throughout the year at our annual concerts and other venues across CT! Here are some of the highlights:
Regionals
In March, seven of our students were accepted into the Northern Region Middle School Music Festival! They prepared music by themselves and got together on a Friday afternoon and Saturday morning with some of the most talented musicians in CT! We even had THREE students chosen for jazz band, which has never happened before! The students are:
Band: Madison Bloom, Kayleigh Krasselt, Mason Bernardi
Orchestra: Logan Fraczek
Jazz Band: Jay Karkhanis, Neil Karkhanis, Rowan Cotter
Spring Concerts
At the end of March, our 6th graders were joined by fifth graders from SNIS in our joint concert! The 7th and 8th grade bands as well as the Jazz Club also had their concerts the next day!
Jazz Fest
On April 22nd, members of the SMS Jazz Band and Jazz Club met at the high school for NMPS Jazz Fest 2025! Students had a masterclass with a professional jazz musician, Albert Rivera (https://albertriverajazz.com/biography/), were mentored by the high school jazz band members and put on a fantastic performance with all of the jazz bands in New Milford!
Jazz/Voices Cabaret
On May 6th, the Jazz Band and Advanced Chorus (Voices) put on a cabaret style concert in the MPR.
Great East Music Festival
On May 16th, members of the 8th grade band went to the Great East Music Festival. Here they played for a panel of judges (one of whom is the Assistant Band Director for the Coast Guard Band!) who critiqued them and worked with them on their musicianship. The 8th Grade Band was awarded a Silver Medal! Students then celebrated their hard work by spending the rest of the day at Six Flags New England!
Jazz and Voices Tour of NES, HPS and SNIS
For over 30 years, the jazz band and voices have gone on tour to the elementary schools to spread the joy of music! On May 19th we continued the tradition by performing for the students at Northville, Hill and Plain and Sarah Noble. Not only does Mr. Polhemus remember doing it when he was in 6th grade, he remembers when he was an audience member in third grade!
Color Guard Clinic
On Tuesday, May 20th, members of the NMHS Color Guard came to SMS to work with students in hopes of building a color guard community here at SMS. These SMS students were so great, some of them may be joining the high school color guard as 8th graders!
Annual Egg Drop
Students in Mrs. Foss and Mrs. Gall’s 8th grade science classes competed in their annual egg drop challenge! During the forces unit, students were tasked to create a contraption that will allow their egg to stay in one piece. The competition began at the classroom level and started in the SMS stairwell. Student contraptions that survived the egg drop in the stairwell advanced to the Egg Drop Finale! SMS was lucky enough to host Chief: Sean Delaney, Bucket Operator: Colton Cherney, and Chaffeur: David Golembeski from Water Witch Hose Company #2 to assist with “elevating” the drop as evidenced by pictures below. Through applying principles of Physics; particularly forces, these students worked together to thoughtfully craft their contraptions with the hopes to survive the 80 foot fall from the top of the Water Witch Hose # 2 Truck ladder!

Walking Project Family Night
This past month we hosted our Walking Project Family Night, more than 200 families attended! Families had a chance to see what the students are learning throughout the Walking Project and to experience a little bit of it for themselves. Activities included vendor tables, a family walk, and many demonstrations and activities, including healthy food samples and recipes, yoga, dance, karate, and boot-camp exercise sessions. It was a great evening!
Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk’s Traveling Teacher Program
Our students participated in a new enrichment experience sponsored by a very generous grant from the PTO and coordinated by the NMPS Talented and Gifted Enrichment Program teacher Dan Delia. Each class participated in a learning experience facilitated by The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk’s Traveling Teacher Program. Third graders learned about Life Between the Tides, Fourth Grader learned about Stream Tables, and 5th Graders learned about The Power of Plankton. Students had a wonderful time learning about the world around them.
It’s Concert Season at SNIS!
At SNIS, our music programs are a source of great pride as students share their talents in chorus and/or instrumental performing groups. Our students, under the direction of Mrs. Anderson and Miss White work all year and their efforts are most evident in our Spring Concerts. These performances are truly joyful noise!!

Yay, it's MAY!
The Bike Rodeo (organized by the PTO) and the Art Walk (through the school - organized by Art Teacher Extraordinaire Mrs. Doreen Cherniske) were two fun events held on the same night, Friday May 2nd! The children enjoyed riding their bikes, a food truck, games and other activities as they interacted with classmates, and their school community on a beautiful, warm evening. Students and parents were encouraged to walk the halls of the school to look at all the artwork on display.
Congratulations to Mrs. Dietz, Substitute of the Year!🤩
Congratulations to Mrs. Samantha Deitz, the Substitute of the Year for our District and a strong member of the Northville School Community! Thank you Mrs. Deitz for being reliable, kind and ready for any assignment we give you, whether it's a long term position, or something different each day! You are an asset here at NES and a big part of why our school thrives. HR Director Terri Kavanagh, Principal Gwen Gallagher, Samantha Deitz, Beatriz Andrade and Beth Solaris (of ESS) were on hand for a group photo.
What a busy month May is for our students and staff! The PTO fundraising efforts bring a lot of wonderful programs, assemblies and field trips for our students, many of which happen in the month of May toward the end of the school year.
On May 7th, the second graders were treated to a Kindness Assembly by "Kind Works." Students learned.... and then painted kindness charms.
On May 8th, the Kindergarteners went on a field trip to The Ridgefield Playhouse to see Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.
On May 13th, the Frogtown Puppets came to NES for a puppet show. The whole school attended and it was fun and funny! On May 16th, the Critter Caravan came to NES to visit our littlest learners, the Excel classes. Children enjoyed learning about small animals and seeing them up close!
On May 19th SMS treated NES to a Jazz Concert, which was a nice assembly for the whole school.
On May 23rd, The Animal Embassy came to give a presentation to our Kindergarten and 1st grades. Similar to Critter Caravan, the children enjoyed learning about and meeting the animals!
On May 27th and 28th - the second graders took a short trip to SNIS to visit the school and become acclimated for their big jump to 3rd grade next year! This is an annual trip to help students get ready for change.
On May 29, the First graders visited the Pratt Center for a day of learning and exploring their natural surroundings. Also on May 29, we had the 2nd Grade Send off - a yearly day of fun for our second graders moving on to SNIS next year!
On May 30, the PTO put together the Touch a Truck (Family Event) for our school community. The PTO provides so much to enhance and supplement your child's school experience. Cheers to our stellar PTO!
Thanks to LHTC, we are well on our way to getting our upcycled bench! We've been collecting plastic and we are getting really close to our goal.
