Back to School

It was wonderful to have so many families at our Friday school sing today. I do wish that the gym were large enough to comfortably hold all of the grades and their families. For those of you new to HSS, we do host a holiday sing for families and all grades in December. It's tight, but still a highlight for many families and students.
A few people mentioned that they appreciated the article that I summarized in the last newsletter. Here is the second article in the series on how to raise resilient children from the Atlantic magazine written by Russell Shaw. It discusses how to use your child's strengths as a way to motivate them when they hit a roadblock or are struggling with something.
The following two sentences resonated with me both as a parent of three children and as an educator. "Raising humans is an imperfect, iterative process. The current parenting landscape—which for many families is defined by an ever-present worry over achievement—can lead moms and dads to focus on what children lack rather than on where they excel." The article then explains a five step process of using strength based motivation.
As educators, we try to find, name, and use the strengths of each student to help them build confidence. I hope that this emphasis comes across during your parent teacher conferences held the end of October.

K-2nd School Sing - October 23rd
If you have a kindergartener, 1st, or 2nd grader in your family, you are invited to join us for the second school sing of the year. It will be on Friday, October 23rd, at 2:10.
Fun Fridays
On Fridays when we don't use the gym for K-2 Sing, we occasionally host Fun Fridays. The third and fourth graders attended the first one of the year. Here are some of the games that they play:
Tic-Tac-Toe Race - Students run down and place a flag in a tic-tac Toe board.
Animal Balance - Put an animal on your head and walk down and back without animal falling off
Ping Pong Air Race - Blow A Ping Pong across the gym
Cone Flip - Who can flip all the cones first
Team Sprint and toss - A student runs out and passes a ball back to their line, then repeat.
Cup Stacking relay - Shuffle through the cups to get back to the first cup
Sword Fight - While holding a frisbee, try to knock everyone else's frisbees off their hands.
Out and Backs - Race to see who can pick up your cones, but you can only grab one at a time.
Counselor Curriculum
We decided that it might be useful for our families to know what is taught during guidance specials in Kinder, 1st, and 2nd grade. Please see the flyer below for details and here is a link to the higher resolution flyer.
Spirit Days
In addition to the two days listed below, students can always wear HSS spirit wear on Fridays.

News from the Nurse
Does my child have a cold or is it allergies?
People can be allergic to animals, insects, foods, or components of the outdoors. Some allergies cause people to sneeze, have itchy eyes and a runny nose while other allergies can be life threatening. While it may not always be easy to determine if your child is suffering from a viral illness that is causing cold symptoms or experiencing allergies, there are some distinct differences between the common cold and allergies.
Important details to remember:
Allergies are not contagious while the common cold can be spread to others. Either way . . . it is still important to wash hands after blowing your nose or sneeze!
There are some medications that may help alleviate allergy symptoms, but antibiotics or other medications do not cure a common cold.
If your child develops a fever, he or she should remain home until being fever free for 24 hours without using any medications.
Check out this helpful chart from healthychildren.org:
Always consult your medical provider with questions or concerns you may have about your child’s health.
