Message from Nicole Pease Principal
DCS families, I hope you have had a wonderful week! Much of our time this week has been about the Children and the Arts festival this weekend! Our amazing Art Teacher Justin Bentley-Melle supported the DCS students in creating sculptures to be carried in the parade. We are excited to have a Very Hungry Caterpillar puppet to carry in the parade.
The first ever STEM night was held Wednesday and it did not disappoint! It was lovely to see so many families enjoy time together exploring the different stations. Thanks to our PTO for funding this wonderful experience!
The third, fourth, and fifth graders have started their spring MAP testing and are working so hard to do their best. Their teachers and I are so very proud of them! The testing will continue next week with New Hampshire State Assessments. Kindergarten through grade 2 will begin their MAP testing next week. It's an exciting time to see what growth the students have achieved throughout the year!
I hope to see many of you tomorrow at the Children and the Arts Festival. We line up at PES at 11:45 for the parade, don't forget to stop by the DCS PTO food tent! Nicole

Thank you for sharing another creative year at DCS. Our students continue to expand their imagination, skills, and friendships as they make wonderful original works. I am excited to see their parade puppets come to life this week. I hope they can join our very hungry caterpillar at the Children and the Arts parade this Saturday. If so, I look forward to celebrating our artists with you!
3/4/5 Team - Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland
The 3/4/5 classrooms are super busy this week! Both classes worked hard on their NWEA Reading and Math portions of the testing. When not testing, the students enjoyed practicing on stage for their plays. The 4/5 students have created their beautiful costumes, and the 3rd graders continue to bring in ideas for their play props. Next week, both classes will paint and prepare their backdrops and any other necessary props.
Thank you, parents and guardians, for your continued support in helping your child get to sleep early so they are rested and ready for testing, and for assisting your child with learning their play lines.
Both classes are also working on academics. The third-grade students are excited about our CKLA literacy unit, which is reading Charlotte’s Web, focusing on story elements and character traits. The students will be writing individual narratives using the writing process. The 4th/5th graders are continuing their studies in poetry and mythology.
For Math, third graders are working on their geometry unit, focusing on quadrilaterals and solving problems involving the perimeter and area of shapes. Across the hall, the fourth-grade students are continuing to multiply and divide large numbers. The fifth-grade students have started a new Unit focused on Multiplying Fractions.
Please note that we will continue SAS testing next week, so attendance is crucial. Also, mark your calendars for Friday, May 29th, at 2:00 pm for our class plays!
First and Second Grade with Mrs. Fletcher
During our habitat study, we learned about a rat named Rattenborough who lives in an urban habitat. He went on our journey to all the habitats we studied, the desert, arctic tundra, etc. We wrapped up our habitat study by collaboratively writing informational paragraphs about the seven different habitats, and of course, Rattenborough became the cover of our book! The students loved seeing their writing "in print" as well as seeing pictures of the posters they designed for each habitat.
Since this is the 250th anniversary of our country, I chose the unit, "A New Nation: American Independence," as our next unit to study in CKLA. Much of this is brand new to the students, but it is so fun to study something that happened in our neighboring state. The students were intrigued by the Boston Tea Party, and they enjoyed learning about the "shot heard round the world!" We made the Old North Church and memorized a portion of the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow...."One if by land, and two if by sea..." Ask a first or second grader to recite this for you! Side note...it would be fun to visit some of these places as a summer family field trip!
We are learning all things dandelions this week! Jaime from the Harris Center has been with us to talk about the life cycle, count seeds, and talk about seed dispersal. The students love learning about nature.
First graders are just finishing up adding numbers to 100 in math! Our next unit is all about measuring. Second graders have worked on adding and subtracting numbers to 1000 and are moving into a focus upon equal groups including odd and even numbers.
Kindergarten with Mrs. Lang
What a busy, busy couple of weeks! Kindergarteners have officially reached the finish line of our digraph unit! They are superheroes at reading and writing words using -th, -sh,-ch, -wh, -ph, -ng, and -nk. We're begun our culminating math unit reviewing counting to 100 and recognizing teen numbers, solving word problems using "math fingers" and counters, identifying 2D and 3D shapes, and comparing heights, weights, and lengths. We've been working hard painting the massive caterpillar puppet for the Children in the Arts parade and made some beautiful artwork that will be displayed in the windows at Roy's Market as part of the celebration. Click here for pics of the many goings-on!
