Opportunity Scholarships of Nebraska
Last year, Nebraska passed LB753, paving the way for school choice in our state. This bill created a nonrefundable tax credit for qualifying taxpayers who contribute to organizations that award educational scholarships. The Diocese of Lincoln has partnered with Opportunity Scholarships of Nebraska (OSN). OSN will help implement LB753, the Opportunity Scholarship Act.
OSN helps implement LB753 by empowering parents to choose the best educational setting for their children, by awarding private school tuition scholarships and providing access to school options.
Please check out their website, www.nebraskaopportunity.org to see if you qualify for a scholarship.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will students currently attending a private school qualify for a scholarship?
While many students already enrolled in private school might not qualify, siblings of eligible students may qualify for an opportunity scholarship. An eligible student must be entering kindergarten or ninth grade in a qualified school or transferring from a Nebraska public school at which the student was enrolled for at least one semester immediately preceding the enrollment in a qualified school.
When will scholarships be available for families?
The Opportunity Scholarships Act (LB753) goes into effect January 1, 2024. OSN will be able to receive tax credit donations for scholarship funds then. Scholarship applications for the 2024-2025 school year will be available for families in January.
Will every student participating in the Opportunity Scholarships Program get a full tuition scholarship?
The amount of every awarded scholarship will be determined by OSN based on each family’s need and available funds. Tuition cannot exceed the full cost of educating an eligible student at your school. It will be important for OSN to know your school’s tuition costs as well as the cost to educate students.
My family participates in a Rule 13 “micro school”, homeschool, or co-op. Can students attending this school qualify for a scholarship through this program?
Scholarships will be awarded to students admitted to qualified schools following the requirements listed above. The Opportunity Scholarships Program does not currently extend to students wishing to attend a Rule 13 school, however, there are other school choice policies that could benefit these families if passed in Nebraska.
