A Message From Superintendent Saxe

Dear Families and Staff,
I am writing to update you on the threat received at Musselman Middle School today. First and foremost, I am deeply grateful that today’s situation turned out to be a false report. However, I also recognize the fear and anxiety that comes with hearing the words bomb threat, and I want to share additional details with you directly.
At approximately 11:00 AM this morning, Musselman Middle School received a live phone call from an out-of-state number, claiming there was an explosive device located near the administrative offices. Law enforcement responded immediately and with urgency. K-9 units from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department, West Virginia State Police, FEMA, and Loudoun County conducted a comprehensive search of the entire building. By approximately 1:00 PM, the search was completed with no positive indications, and the building was declared All Clear.
In addition, a physical and visual sweep was carried out by the Berkeley County Schools' safety and resource team in partnership with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department to ensure full assurance of safety.
This incident remains under investigation as the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department works to identify the source of the call. I want to be clear: this type of threat is extremely serious, disruptive, and unlawful. Those responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent permitted by law.
I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the administrators, faculty, and staff of Musselman Middle and Musselman High Schools. Their professionalism, preparedness, and calm coordination in relocating, feeding, and supporting students today were truly exceptional. I am especially proud of how our district leaders, school administrators, teachers, counselors, cooks, bus drivers, and support staff came together seamlessly to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. I also want to commend our students for their courtesy and maturity throughout the entire event. Our students handled the situation with admirable composure and respect.
Thank you once again to our law enforcement partners who were on site, as well as the first responders who remained on standby. Your swift response and clear communication provided reassurance to our students, staff, and families during a critical time.
Finally, I want to express my gratitude to our community and our families for your patience, trust, and continued support as we work together to ensure the safety and well-being of every student in our care.
Yours in Education,
Ryan S. Saxe, Ed.D
Superintendent
