Superior Middle School Continuous Improvement Plan
Before the school year starts, each school assembles a Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) Team to assess their school's data. This includes reviewing attendance, grade performance, behavior, and student and family perception surveys. The team then sets two main goals to focus on for the upcoming school year, and creates an action plan. Superior Middle School's two CIP goals for the 2023/24 school year are:
- Bring our truancy rate from over 41% down to 25% by increasing student connections and engagement. Currently, we are doing well with attendance at SMS, and have truancy rates at 10.83%. What can you do at home to help support this goal is to review the district's attendance policy linked below. Reach out to Ms. Charity for assistance or to report absences.
- 90% of SMS students will make modest, typical, or aggressive growth on ELA FastBridge. FastBridge is a Literacy centered standardized test. Students took the test this Fall, we will have results in January. What can you do at home to help support this goal is encourage your child to read at home. Utilize our library at SMS or visit the public library.
Attendance Matters!
Contact Ms. Charity at charity.gurovitsch@superior.k12.wi.us with any questions or assistance with attendance needs.

The holiday season can be a stressful time for many. Mindfulness can help decrease stress by promoting awareness, allowing you to savor joyful moments rather than rushing through them.
Mindfulness is an essential skill that involves being in control of your mind rather than letting your mind be in control of you - to live our lives mindfully rather than mindlessly. Being mindful helps us cope with life difficulties in a healthy way. Mindfulness allows us to pay attention to our feelings without acting on them or allow them to control our actions and words.
Mindfulness requires two things: to be aware of the present moment without judgment and without trying to change it and staying focused on one thing at a time.
There are many benefits of mindfulness, such as, increasing self-esteem, improving interpersonal relationships, decreasing stress and anxiety and decreasing symptoms of depression.
In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), there is a concept called Three States of Mind: Emotion Mind, Reasonable Mind, and Wise Mind. Each of these impact our thoughts and behaviors in different ways. Therefore, it is important to practice mindfulness to help yourself find Wise Mind.
Emotion Mind is mood dependent, urge-based and reactive. Feelings control our thoughts and behaviors.
Reasonable Mind is when our logical self is in control. You approach a situation intellectually and make decisions based on facts.
Wise Mind is the blend of our emotional mind and our reasonable mind. In Wise Mind, we recognize our feelings, while responding to them rationally.

Healthy Minute
Cutting Back on Sugar Consumption
Tis’ the season... sugar is EVERYWHERE! From Halloween to Valentine’s Day and every holiday in between, it is a season for added sugar intake. Candy, pies, cookies, and holiday treats are all in surplus this time of year. Sugar in the body creates a cascade of negative effects, including: lack of concentration, energy crashes, food cravings, mood swings, anxiety, irritability, and many other feelings/symptoms. This is not unique to students though; children and adults experience such presentations when they are consuming too many sugary foods or drinks. It is very important to have an awareness of the alarming amount of added sugars that are in many foods such as holiday cookies, coffee/energy beverages, yogurts, cereals/granola, protein bars or shakes, condiments, salad dressings, spaghetti sauce, pop, and so many more. It is recommended that children consume no more than 3-6 teaspoons (or 12-24 grams) of sugar per day. Today, children are consuming up to 16 teaspoons of sugar per day (up to 64 grams!!!) which can lead to many serious health conditions. (Not to mention- excess sugar diminishes our immune system; ever wonder why illnesses increase so much in the winter months?)
The health office recommends focusing especially on reducing sugary drinks and encourages zero sugar added water flavorings instead of pop or juice. Making small changes may help improve your childs’ moods, behaviors, and concentration. Give it a try and see if you notice a difference! Happy Holidays 🙂
