WMS Newsletter
May 1, 2026
Dear WMS Families,
As we turn the calendar to May, we are entering one of the busiest and most rewarding stretches of the school year. Our focus remains on strong teaching and learning, supporting students through MCAS, and continuing to meet students where they are through targeted instruction.
This is also a time to celebrate our community, spring concerts, performances, and end-of-year events are right around the corner and highlight the incredible talents of our students. We are proud of the way our students continue to demonstrate our core values each day.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership. Consistent attendance and daily engagement remain critical as we head into the final weeks of the school year.
Warm regards,
Carrie Ruggiero, Principal
Calendar Change: Early Release Day on Tuesday, June 16, 2026
Due to significant and unusual traffic congestion experienced during a recent World Cup Event that delayed school dismissal and transportation, Tuesday, June 16 has been designated as an Early Release Day for all Students.
Tuesday, June 16 will now be observed as an Early Release Day
All schools will dismiss at their regular early dismissal time
This adjustment reflects the unique scale of this international event and is not reflective of typical stadium-related activities. The Walpole Police Department plans to increase patrols and monitor areas where students may typically gather, and principals will communicate with families to discourage students from congregating in already congested areas throughout town.

Exciting News for Student Absences, Dismissals and Tardies!
Instead of sending a handwritten note to the WMS Main office you can now use the WMS Notification Form.
- For Absences and Tardies, we ask that parents do their best to complete this form within 24 hours of the missed instructional time in order to communicate with the Main Office.
- For Dismissals, we ask that parents do their best to complete this form at least two hours prior to dismissal, so our staff can be prepared and teaching and learning is not disrupted by phone calls from the Main Office.
- It is important for you to complete this form so a digital pass can be created for your student which will minimize classroom interruption.
- If parents are dismissing multiple students at the same time, please complete the form for each student.

There are approximately 7,995 books in the physical library collection with over 2,478 books checked out this school year.
Students and staff have access to eBooks and audiobooks in SORA through the Massachusetts Library System Commonwealth eBook Collection.
Encyclopedia Britannica and some of the Gale Databases are provided to the school for free through the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and a grant from the Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS) because the school has a licensed librarian on staff.
The school librarian provides information & digital literacy instruction, collaborates with classroom teachers, and curates resources.
Students can come to the school library for book suggestions and research help during homeroom, Flex Block, and most days during lunch block.

National Junior Honors Society (NJHS)
National Junior Honors Society (NJHS) Application Emailed to Eligible Students
For the 2026-2027 school year, we are planning for Walpole Middle School to be a member school for the National Junior Honor Society. At the 7th Grade Award Ceremony, we spoke to the 7th Grade students about their opportunity to apply to be in NJHS for next year.
At this time, our current 7th grade is the only grade eligible to become members of this group. On Friday, May 1, eligible students received an email to their school accounts from Ms. Elwell to invite them to apply. In order to be eligible to apply, students had to academically qualify with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher through their time at WMS.
NJHS is based on five pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. In order to complete the application, students should complete the form in Ms. Elwell's email and outline their specific community service before the stated deadline of Friday, June 5.
For any students who were not eligible at this time, or for any students who miss the deadline, be aware that you will be able to apply next year as well. If families have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Elwell, Ms. Naismith, or your student's assistant principal.

WMS Math Website
This Math site for parents is designed specifically for parents and families. It offers a breakdown of the topics in each of the 8 units covered throughout the course of the year. Most of the topics have a video link built in that will offer support for students and/or parents/families when working on math at home. There is a section for each grade level course, as well as math connections. In addition, there is a section that breaks down the prerequisite skills that play a big role for each grade level. We hope this serves as a valuable resource for parents and families throughout the year.
WMS Humanities Website
This Humanities site for parents serves as an informational hub for curriculum topics in ELA, Social Studies and Reading.
