Cougar News - Week of 8/14/23
Letter from Ms. Bedford
Hello Smallville,
Are you ready….the time has come, it is the start of the new school year! I am thrilled to see all of our Cougars bright and early Monday morning. I extend warm greetings as we prepare to embark on another exciting journey of learning and growth. This year will be filled with amazing opportunities and achievements for our students.
We understand that the beginning of a new school year can be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, especially for parents of students new to campus and are transitioning to a new environment. Please rest assured that your children are in safe and caring hands with our dedicated staff members. As a mom to an incoming 6th grader here at Small, I understand the feelings some of you may be experiencing, so feel free to bring me some of your tissues for my own tears as my daughter starts her middle school adventure. As always we will have all hands on deck to welcome our Cougars to campus. We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for every student and providing a nurturing and enriching experience.
While we appreciate and understand the natural apprehension that comes with sending your child off to middle school and maybe even a new campus, we kindly request your cooperation in adhering to our school's policy regarding drop-off procedures. In order to maintain a secure and focused learning environment, parents are not permitted to take their students to their respective classrooms or enter the building beyond the designated drop-off points. This policy helps us uphold the safety of all students and staff members, as well as the efficient flow of activities throughout the school day. We are also asking that you take a look at our car drop off procedures to ensure that we have a safe process for our students to arrive on campus.
I promise you, all staff members here at Small are ready, excited, and prepared to welcome all of our students into a safe and loving environment. We will be stationed in the hallways to guide students to their classrooms, answer any questions they may have, and provide the reassurance they need to start the day with confidence.
We are genuinely excited to partner with you in shaping a successful and rewarding school year for your child. Throughout the year, we will keep you informed about various school events, important dates, and educational initiatives that will contribute to your child's growth and development. We value your involvement in your child's education and look forward to working together to create a supportive and enriching learning community.
Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of educating your child. We are committed to fostering a safe, fun, and inclusive, environment where each student can flourish and reach their fullest potential. Here's to an exceptional school year filled with growth, discovery, and achievement!

First Day of School Schedule
- The kids only need to bring their water bottles and lunch. Each teacher will communicate with their students what supplies they will need for that class and when they need to bring them.
- Parents will not be able to walk students to class, we recommend dropping them off in the car lane or putting them on the bus.
- Once on campus there will be many helpful adults guiding the kids to the right locations.
- First stop cafeteria at the windows, where a list posted on campus. There they will see their Pride classroom.
- If they get to school before 8:15 they make a mental note of their pride class, then head to either the Gym (6th and 7th graders) or Cafeteria (8th Graders). At 8:15 they will be released to go to Pride.
- Once in pride they will get their paper schedules and are instructed on what to do the rest of the day. At 8:35 they will be released to go to their 1st period.
- After that they will follow their A day Schedule. (see bell schedule)
- Day 2, they will just follow their B day schedule (No Pride first thing that is just a first day of school thing)
We have been doing this for many years and we know they will do great. We will all be on hand to help.

Updated AB Calendar
A Message from the nurse
Hello Parents,
All medications require a signed medical permission form along with the parent signing the permission form. Only epipens, inhalers, and diabetic meds/supplies can be carried with a valid order, all other medications must be kept in the nurses office. Immunizations will be worked on over the next few weeks, and we will let you know if your student needs any vaccinations. There is a 30 day grace period for any necessary shots before the student cannot attend class. Health screenings to include vision/hearing/scoliosis will be conducted throughout the year. Please email alana.bejarano@austinisd.org if you do not want your student screened. Per Texas law, you must provide the screenings to the school from your pediatrician should you not want them screened on campus. Please feel free to stop by the nurses office for any questions.
Thank you,
Alana Bejarano RN

You can also find this form on our website under hotlinks in the bottom left corner on the main page year round.

House Bill 114
The Austin ISD Student Success Guide (Student Code of Conduct) is now available on the Austin ISD District website for students, parents, and guardians to review. One important legislative update is that ALL e-cigarettes (THC and Tobacco) are prohibited. House Bill 114 requires a student to be placed in the District Alternative Education Program (DAEP) if the student possesses, uses, is under the influence, sells, gives, or delivers marijuana, THC, or an e-cigarette (new) while on campus, within 300 feet of school property, or at a school-related event. Under Austin ISD guidelines, this is a 20-day DAEP placement. Parents and guardians are strongly urged to talk to their students about this new policy and review the Student Success Guide to help keep our schools safe for students and staff. For resources to use when talking with your student about the harmful effects of e-cigarettes visit https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/.
