Welcome to Mrs. Torres' Business Boardroom

Hello! I have put together this newsletter as we are halfway through the 2nd semester of the 2022-2023 school year.

I'm always happy to answer questions from parents via email. If the email warrants a phone conference we can move to that option as well. My hopes are that this newsletter answers questions about the business class your student is enrolled in.

I want you all to know I truly love what I do, and I love having your student in my class. My theme in the classroom follows a boardroom atmosphere. We speak on so many different topics and it helps students understand that behind every business there are leaders, employees, and money-making decisions that must be made.

I believe that grades reflect a student's work ethic. So I work diligently with students one on one to make sure they understand their grades. I encourage all to read the comments under grades listed in both Canvas & Skyward.

Review this newsletter to have a full idea of the business classroom and what your student is learning. You'll have a good understanding of the opportunities your student has through the School of Business.

I love business and I share this with my students daily! In the business boardroom, we speak about topics in business that are happening today. Here are my favorite websites to find news that I believe pertains to our youth/young adults;

HHS BPA Takes 5th Place at State Competition!

Business Professionals of America traveled to Indianapolis for the 3 day State Leadership Conference. Members Bojana Kolundzija and Annabelle Mauries (10th) competed in the category of Small Business Management. In December, they took 1st place for their event at the Regional level. At the state level, the members took 5th place overall! They were to problem-solve specific situations in small businesses and come up with solutions. We are super proud of their efforts and recognition at the state level!

Business Professionals of America

Finally! I must put in a plug for the club I sponsor Business Professionals of America.

Business Professionals of America (BPA) is a national, co-curricular, career/technical organization for students in middle school, high school, and college business and technology programs

Students compete at the regional, state, and national levels in more than 50 Workplace Skills Assessment Program events, engage in community and leadership service activities and meet business students across the state and country through participation in our programs.

Our alumni go on to do great things: leading their industry, advocating for others, and achieving educational success. In conjunction with K-12 schools, colleges, and universities across the state, we help prepare today’s students to become tomorrow’s business professionals.”

Who can join? Any Hobart High School student. Many members have been in a business class or are interested in learning more about business.

Deadline to join? We take members all school year, there is no deadline to join.

Are there activities? Yes! We have attended the Hobart Business Expo and participated in Small Business Saturday with the Hobart Chamber of Commerce. We took a trip to the United Center to meet the Business and Marketing Team for the Chicago Bulls. We even stayed for the basketball game and ate deep-dish pizza and Garretts popcorn! We also encourage community service. We also host additional events like Dodgeball Tournaments and donate our proceeds to charity.

Here are some links to view if your student is interested;

BPA Members & the Chicago Bulls

February 13, 2023, Business Professionals of America members traveled to the United Center to meet the Marketing and Business team behind the Chicago Bulls. Members could hear about careers in Sports Marketing and so much more! They then attended a private practice, watching the NBA players warm up while witnessing how the United Center put together a professional basketball event. Afterward, all members were able to watch the Chicago Bulls game! This event takes place every year and members always have a great learning experience.

A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight: Valentine Torres

Imagine dropping out of college not just once, but two times. That's how Valentine Torres' story begins. Her decision to go to school only when she was ready may not be the typical journey, but it changed her life for the better. Torres grew up in South Haven and graduated from Portage High School.
