February at Whitwell Middle School: A Season of Growth, Pride, and Purpose

February is one of those special months at Whitwell Middle School — a time when energy, tradition, and opportunity all come together. Our gyms are full, our fields are waking back up, and our students are stepping into moments they’ll remember for a lifetime.

This month brings volleyball season, the start of baseball, the close of another basketball journey, and something truly historic for our school — our first-ever regional basketball game. That moment isn’t just about sports. It represents belief, work ethic, commitment, and the power of a community that supports its children.

But February isn’t only about athletics. It’s about growth.
It’s about discipline.
It’s about effort.
It’s about learning who we are becoming.

At WMS, we believe in compassion — and we also believe in standards. We believe in grace — and we believe in responsibility. We believe in encouragement — and we believe in accountability. We believe in loving our students — and preparing them for a world that requires resilience, work ethic, and integrity.

Our message is simple:
👉 Be Better.

Not better than someone else —
better than yesterday.

No laziness in our thinking.
No shortcuts in our effort.
No settling in our mindset.

We push because we care.
We expect because we believe.
We challenge because our students are capable of more than they realize.

To our students:
You are supported. You are loved. And you are capable of greatness when you choose effort over excuses and growth over comfort.

To our families and community:
Thank you for standing with us, believing in our kids, filling our stands, supporting our teams, and trusting us with what matters most — your children.

February is a reminder that momentum matters, culture matters, and community matters.

Let’s celebrate our athletes.
Let’s honor our traditions.
Let’s protect our culture.
And let’s continue building a school where excellence is normal, growth is expected, and “Be Better” is not a slogan — it’s a way of life.

Proud to serve this community.
Proud of our students.
Proud to be Whitwell. ❤️🖤🐯

Celebrating Valentine's Day

Question:Holidays can sometimes be a mixed blessing in schools. For example, students love to exchange cards on Valentine's Day but every year there are problems. Sometimes the exchange seems too competitive and often there are students who feel left out.

Courtly Love
The more modern celebration of Valentine's Day grew out of the medieval traditions of courtly love. If you're teaching a HS History, ELA, or Drama class, you might enjoy this lesson from the Kennedy Center.

Love Lessons

Valentine's Day is a great time to get students thinking critically about a complex human emotion. © Shutterstock.com/TFPhoto I have to admit that my reaction to Valentine's Day is often expressed in one word: ugh. But completely ignoring a holiday that is clearly here to stay isn't much of an option.
