Calendar Options for 2022-23
The MSD Calendar Committee has proposed a school calendar option that includes a fall break for the 2022-23 school year. The fall break would extend the Thanksgiving break to a full week.
The proposed fall break would move the start of the school year to the last week of August and incorporate a four-day weekend for Labor Day.
Please share your thoughts about this option by participating in a ThoughtExchange. Additional details on the calendar options are included with the exchange.
The calendar option drafts are attached below.
TikTok Challenge
I want to let you know about another TikTok challenge that has come to our attention. The challenge involves loading Orbeez gel balls into an airsoft gun or other toy blasters.
The colorful beads are marketed as sensory toys and the manufacturer encourages users to find new, fun ways to use them as the “Orbeez Challenge.”
The challenge has evolved into using the balls as ammunition and filming their use for TikTok videos. There have been news reports from other states about minor injuries and other issues.
The McMinnville Police Department has informed us that they received a report of some local teens driving around the community and using the blasters. Officers stopped the kids and strongly advised them about the dangers of using toys that might be mistaken for real guns.
Please talk to your students about this challenge and the potential danger to others and themselves.
Parent Roundtables
The Tuesday after Spring Break, March 29, will be the next round of parent roundtables.
Join me via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. for an open conversation on whole group issues and solutions. You can join at any time during the hour and you don’t have to stay the entire time.
Out and About in Our Schools
In honor of National School Breakfast Week, elementary students received a special pencil in their meal bags, and secondary students who ate breakfast were entered into a drawing for a pair of Beats Wireless Headphones.
Why do we want to encourage students to eat breakfast? Because research shows that kids who eat a complete breakfast show improved concentration, alertness, comprehension, memory and learning.
