Student Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures
We would like to take a moment to remind everyone of the proper drop-off/ pick-up procedures for your students at the High School. First thing, we want to make sure your students are safe. This will always be our #1 priority! This includes our security staff who our out directing traffic, rain or shine, to ensure your students’ safety, while also attempting to keep traffic flowing through the loop.
There has been an increase in student drivers to start the year each of the last few years and the lots will fill up quickly. This means A LOT of NEW drivers who may not be familiar with the traffic volume before/after school.
Parents———PLEASE use the drop-off loop off Seventh Street. Do not use the side streets to drop-off your student to walk across Seventh Street towards the school.
#1—— It is posted NO stopping, standing or parking during drop-off and pick-up times.
#2—— It is safer to get closer to the building. As we get closer to the start of the year it will be staying darker later, which means it will be harder to see students as they cross the street.
PLEASE NOTE—— For the traffic on Seventh Street and those trying to turn left from Washington St. onto Seventh Street, PLEASE try to alternate. Unless, of course, there are cars leaving the school preventing vehicles waiting to turn left from Washington onto Seventh Street. Although there is no stop sign on Seventh Street at Washington, the traffic on Seventh usually stops to let someone in. This keeps things from backing up too much on any one street at any point in time.
Please do NOT use the rear of the school or the BCPA Lot to drop-off —— This area will be blocked off with cones preventing cars from entering the drop-off line. Also, there is NOT a turnaround option in this lot. There are so many students and staff coming into and leaving the lot it creates an added hazard to all. The goal is to maintain ONE direction traffic into these lots as much as possible in an attempt to avoid any traffic collisions.
Every year, we hear about the traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon. PLEASE understand with 2000 plus students and staff packed into this building there is a lot of traffic around the school. We do the best we can to keep things moving as quickly as possible while still keeping all of our students and staff as safe as possible. If you are looking to avoid the congestion, here are a few things to look at:
#1—— Have your students ride the bus or car pool
#2—— Pull all the way up to the end of the sidewalk in front of BHS. This will maximize the amount of cars that can drop-off at one time (especially since all three doors on the front side of BHS are open for student entry each morning).
#3—— Plan to get to the high school before 7:10 am. If you get your student up and are arriving at BHS before 7:10 am, you can usually just drop-off and continue on your way without getting caught in a long line up.
For Pick-Up——— Make sure when you are lining up waiting to ONLY utilize the lane CLOSEST to BHS. The LEFT lane MUST be left OPEN for drive -thru traffic! Also, as the pick-up gets longer out to the road and down Seventh Street, you can park in the front parking lot and wait for your student there as well.
Morning Building Entrance Information
We have been receiving a few questions about building access and when students are able to enter the building in the morning and through which doors. As a result, we wanted to share the following information with you:
- BHS doors unlock at 6 am. Students are able to enter the building at that point in time.
- Students riding the bus will arrive at approximately 7 am over by the Athletic Department/Pool Doors.
- Students entering the building in the morning (prior to 7:30 am) can enter through any of the three sets of doors on the front side of the building, through the BHS Cafeteria doors, the Athletic Department and Pool Doors, behind the building by Leith Lake, and by the Pooh's Corner loop. All other doors to BHS will remain shut and locked.
- For safety and security reasons, students arriving after 7:30 am must enter the building through the Main Office doors. They should NOT be asking peers to let them in through any other doors when arriving late.
Morning Breakfast Information
As in the past, school breakfast will once again be free as long as students are taking a complete school breakfast as identified by food service guidelines and staff. A la carte items are still available for purchase at the student's expense. School breakfast items are available beginning at 7 am each day. The cafeteria space will be open for students prior to 7 am, but food/drink items will not be available for purchase prior to that point in time.
Class Supply Lists
In terms of a class supply list for students, it really depends on the classes a student elects to take. We recommend notebooks and folders for each class, an agenda/planner to help with organization unless they plan to do so digitally, preferred writing utensils (both pens and pencils), and a TI-84 calculator for math if they don't have one already (this will work for any classes they will take at BHS). From there, it is really just personal student preference. A teacher would let them know if there is anything specific they need the first week of school, but these items are generally few and far between.
As with any situation, if assistance is needed to obtain any supplies identified by your student's classroom teacher, please don't hesitate to reach out to their Grade Level Principal.
7th St. Construction Project - Currently in Progress
In case you were not aware, while 7th St. is now open to through traffic, the 1st (northernmost) entrance to the BHS drop off/pick up loop and the Main Office parking lot is currently closed for repair. Due to an issue with water accumulation, the road work could not be delayed. While we are hopeful it will be completed prior to school starting on Tuesday, there is no guarantee given the weather we have had the last few days.
We will let you know if it looks like everything will be fully open by Tuesday morning or not as it becomes more clear. If it will not be open, we will complete an alternate plan for entrance into the drop off/pick up loop at that point in time.
1st Day of School Schedule - New Schedule this Year
This year, we have adjusted our schedules for both the 1st day of school and the last day of school. The new 1st day of school bell schedule can be found here. Highlights of the changes to the 1st day of school schedule can be found below:
- 9th grade students need to be in their 1st hour class at the normal start time (7:30 am). Students in grades 10 through 12 will start at 11:19 am.
- All students will have the same amount of time in each class on the 1st day (26 minutes).
- 9th graders will all have lunch together on the 1st day of school at 10:48 am. Their regular lunch schedule will start on the second day of school.
1st Day of School Transportation Schedule
There is no change to the bus schedule for 9th grade students on the first day of school. We WILL have transportation for our students with a late start on the first day of school (incoming 10th through 12th graders). Pick up times are currently visible in StudentConnect/ParentConnect online. Per the Transportation Department, on the first day of school only, students in grades 10 through 12 should plan on bus pick up 4 hours later than usual to accommodate their late start. Pick up at the normal indicated time will resume on the second day of school.
Last Day for Schedule Changes - Friday, September 11th
As a reminder, the last day for schedule changes will be Friday, September 11th unless the schedule change is a result of being misplaced in a class. Schedule change request information can be found within the BHS Counseling Office. Please keep in mind that schedule changes for specific teacher requests, or having class/lunch with friends, are not schedule change requests that will be honored.
Vacancy at BHS - Health Care Professional Position
BHS is currently looking for an outstanding medical professional to join our team! A copy of the job posting can be found here, while a job summary can be found below.
Health Care Professionals will primarily assist students with medical & physical needs in our buildings. As part of our District medical team, Health Care Professionals’ duties include some of the following tasks: monitoring ill students, providing direct medical care to students, monitoring vital signs, keeping charts & records up to date, assisting in the school and clinic areas as needed, stocking medical areas, communicating with families via phone & computer, and other duties as assigned.
Fueling Kids Futures Program
Considering the tough economic times facing our area, we are attempting to help Brighton School families by making sure all our children have enough food. “Fueling Kids’ Futures One Meal at a Time” is a program designed to provide students on the free and reduced lunch program with enough food for three meals a day during the weekends. This program is a community-based program sponsored by Fueling Kids’ Futures, Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, Our Food Partner, and the Brighton Community.
If you agree to take part in this program, during the school year, your child will receive a bag filled with purchased food for the weekend. Bags will be dispensed in a discreet and caring manner. The simple meals may include food like mac and cheese, canned chicken, canned tuna, granola bars, peanut butter, soups, cereal, fruit cups, and other items. For you, there is no cost associated with this program.
To ensure, as to the best of our ability, to provide for a safe packing environment all volunteers will follow the guidelines established by the Brighton School District. All food will be sent home in disposable plastic bags.
If you would like to have your child participate in this program, please reach out to BHS Grade Level Principal Tracie Richards (richardst@brightonk12.com). If you have more than one child attending the school, share the names of all children in this school. Please be sure to indicate on the form if there are any food allergies. If your child has a food allergy, you as the parent are responsible for checking all food labels when the food arrives home. Brighton Area Schools as well as Fueling Kids’ Futures, Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, and the Food Partner will not be held responsible for any accidental food allergen exposure.
Building and District Calendars for the Year
School Breakfast/Lunch Information for 2026/27 School Year
We have been getting a handful of questions on if breakfast and lunch will be free again for the 2026/27 school year. At this point in time, we are anticipating the following (although it is always subject to change). We will let you know if any changes to the follow information take place.
For the 2026–2027 school year, Michigan's universal free school meals program is continuing, so students can continue to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day if they so choose. The program is funded through a combination of federal reimbursements and state funding.
An important note:
- À la carte items, second meals, and some extra snacks or beverages are not included and would still require payment
Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy (Recent Legislation)
Background:
On February 10, 2026, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bipartisan legislative package, consisting of Senate Bill 495 and House Bill 4141, designed to minimize classroom distractions and improve student focus across Michigan schools. This new law mandates that all public school districts implement a formal policy prohibiting the use of personal wireless communication devices during instructional time, effective for the 2026-27 school year.
Luckily, Brighton High School put a cell phone policy into place several years ago, putting us ahead of the curve and setting us up for success in meeting this new legislation. Our policy is outlined in our BHS Student Handbook on page 50. Below is a summary of our policy and procedures.
Brighton High School Personal Device Policy and Procedures:
Brighton High School prioritizes a focused learning environment by having students "Pouch" their personal devices as they enter the classroom and during instructional time. This ensures consistency within all classrooms while maintaining student agency during specific and flexible times (before school, after school, during passing times, and during lunch). Every student will be provided with a school-issued device to ensure equitable access to digital curricular resources during instructional time.
Definitions:
Personal Electronic Devices: Includes, but is not limited to, internet-capable cellular phones, personal computers, iPads or tablets, smart watches, earbuds, headphones, and smart glasses.
“Pouch” your phone: At BHS, “pouching” your phone means to put it in the phone pocket on the wall as the student enters the classroom.
1. Classroom Expectations (The "Pouch" Standard):
Immediate Pouching: Upon entering any classroom, students are required to place their phones in the designated classroom pouch.
Wearables & Accessories: Smart watches must be stored in the student's backpack/bookbag or pouched, and earbuds must be removed from ears entirely and also must be stored or pouched.
Duration: Devices must remain in the pouch for the duration of the period. To ensure instructional consistency, mid-class "phone breaks" are not permitted.
2. Device Usage:
School-Issued Devices: BHS is equipped with student chromebooks in the classrooms to ensure equitable access to the digital curricular resources during instructional time.
Instructional Exceptions: Advisory and/or courses requiring specialized technology (e.g., Video Production, Yearbook, etc) may allow personal electronic device use to complete projects only with explicit principal/teacher approval.
3. BHS Student Handbook:
Discipline / Expectations Development: With this plan, students are required to follow the school policy and procedures. Progressive discipline will be utilized for infractions based on the steps outlined in the student handbook.
BHS Attendance Policy
As always, we will work with you/your student if there are extenuating circumstances, but our goal is to have students in front of their teachers as much as possible as we know it increases the likelihood of their success. The full BHS Attendance Policy is outlined below:
Absences:
Each semester, students will be allowed 9 absences. When the absence is excused, the student will be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests without penalty. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests. Once a student reaches 10 absences (excused or unexcused), he/she may enter into a “loss of credit” status. The student will continue to attend class and work towards academic success. If there are no additional absences, the “loss of credit” status may revert back into course credit with the earned grade. In cases of continued but limited excused absences, the student will have the opportunity to appeal the “loss of credit” status, presenting evidence of extenuating circumstances, and possibly have credit reinstated to their grade level principal.
Please note: Excused absences that WILL NOT count in the (9) day limitation are those for documented medical and court appointments, religious observances, funerals, and those for school business and suspensions.
Per Board Policy 5301, the Building Principal or designee may impose additional consequences for excessive absenteeism, consistent with the student handbook or published grading procedures.
Absentee reports will be run by Administration at progress reports and marking periods throughout the school year. Based on those reports, the following will take place.
*Note: 10 or more absences per semester, student enters a loss of credit status (NC). Every 5 tardies = 1 absence.
** Appeal process goes to the Grade Level Principal for potential credit reinstatement.
Tardies:
Students are allowed 3 tardies per semester without a disciplinary referral. Once a student hits the 4th tardy, they will be sent to their Grade Level Principal for a student conference. The next offense will result in making up time during an after school detention. Multiple offenses will escalate the student discipline. A parent phone call does NOT excuse a tardy.

Ruck to Live Event - Saturday, September 19th
Please see the message below from Veterans Connected:
On Saturday, September 19, Veterans Connected will host our 6th Annual Ruck to Live at the Brighton Veterans Memorial.
The event began within the veteran community, but its purpose reaches far beyond it.
Suicide doesn't discriminate. Our own communities have experienced the devastating loss of young people to suicide. Those losses affect classmates, teachers, coaches, friends, families, and entire schools. We believe our young people need opportunities to talk about mental health, learn to look out for one another, and understand that asking for help is a sign of strength.
That is why we are especially inviting our local schools to walk with us. Students, families, and staff can participate in either the 8-Mile Ruck or the Patriotic 1-Mile Walk. Throughout the 8-mile route, we will pause at each mile to honor the life of a veteran or civilian who died by suicide.
We are currently seeking eight veterans and eight civilians whose lives can be honored during this year's Ruck. If your school community or one of your families has lost someone to suicide and would like them remembered, we would be honored to walk in their memory.
Our intention isn't to define someone by how they died. We want to honor how they lived, walk alongside the people who loved them, and remind families and friends that they don't have to carry that grief alone. And as we walk, we want to start conversations about PTSD, mental health and suicide prevention that may help someone who is struggling today. That's what Together We Heal has always meant to Ruck to Live. Healing happens when we stop carrying difficult things alone.
We would greatly appreciate your help sharing this opportunity with your students, parents, teachers, counselors, coaches, teams, clubs and other school organizations. Walk as a team. Walk as a family. Walk in someone's memory. Or simply walk because you believe no one should struggle alone.

Homecoming season is right around the corner, and LACASA is once again opening the doors to Cinderella’s Closet, a pop-up boutique where local high school students can find stylish, gently loved formalwear at prices families can afford.
From September 17–20, students can shop $25 gowns, dresses, and suits, along with deeply discounted shoes and accessories to complete their Homecoming look. Every purchase also supports LACASA’s vital services for survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual violence.
More than a shopping event, Cinderella’s Closet creates a welcoming and uplifting experience where students are surrounded by encouraging messages, guidance for making healthy choices, and supportive adults who want every student to feel confident and celebrated.
“In a time when families continue to feel the strain of rising costs, Cinderella’s Closet helps ensure that Homecoming can be a special experience without becoming a financial burden,” said LACASA President and CEO Bobette Schrandt. “Every student deserves the opportunity to feel confident and celebrated. When students shop at Cinderella’s Closet, they’re not only finding something they love to wear - they’re also helping support hope and healing for children and families in our community.”
Donations are still needed to help stock Cinderella’s Closet. LACASA is especially in need of short dresses suitable for Homecoming, as well as other gently loved formalwear, shoes, and accessories. Community members can drop off donations at LACASA Collection’s Donation Station Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or contact Snedicor’s Green Earth Cleaners for pickup and cleaning services. Donated formalwear is given a second life, helping make Homecoming more affordable for local students while reducing textile waste.
Cinderella’s Closet is open to high school students only, and a valid student ID is required. A limited number of formalwear scholarships are available; students may inquire with staff or volunteers on site.
This year’s Homecoming pop-up boutique will be located at Kensington Valley Outlets, in a storefront just down from LACASA Collection, next to the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Outlet. As an added bonus, shoppers will receive a 25% off coupon for shoes and accessories at LACASA Collection to complete their look.
Volunteers are still needed to help set up, staff, and take down the boutique. Those interested can email Volunteering@lacasacenter.org.
