Message from Principal Eschels...
Dear HCA Families,
I am reflecting on October and thinking about how much change we have already seen at our school. The new faces are now new friends. The wide-eyed and sometimes bashful students are now confident and engaged learners. Outside, the long sunny days are making way for changing leaf colors and cooler temperatures. As I write this, I’m hoping the wet weather holds off for the rest of the day so our “Trunk or Treat” event tonight (10/29) stays dry for HCA and Burton students.
I am so proud of the growth our students have already shown. It is important to celebrate the daily accomplishments while being aware of the long term goals for both this academic year and beyond. You should be getting your October progress report from your teacher this week. Please look it over and dialog with your son or daughter with how they are doing. Celebrate their successes, and remind them that as the learning coach, you are there to support them with areas of growth as well. If a student’s progress is marked ‘unsatisfactory,’ the teacher will work with the student and family on a plan for support. The teacher, learning coach, student team are capable of great things with regular, focused actions! Our goal is “satisfactory” progress for every student!
In November, students in grades 3–8 will take short English and math assessments called Focused Interim Assessment Blocks (FIABs). Each assessment has 5–9 questions similar to those on the spring state assessment. Teachers will choose question sets that connect to what students have learned, helping students feel prepared. The results will help teachers see what students understand, identify where they may need support, and make sure each student can use the tools they need during testing.
Finally, a reminder that Trimester 1 ends on Nov 20th, just before the full week off for Thanksgiving. Report cards will go out a couple weeks after that, but I wanted to make sure our community was aware of that calendar milestone coming up. I hope all of you feel supported during your first two months of the school year. I’ve enjoyed leading this incredible group of staff, students and families. Thank you for your continued feedback, thoughts, and support. We couldn’t do this without ALL of you!
