THE GRANTONIAN
February 6th 2026
In celebration of Black History Month at Grant, we honor the achievements, history, and culture of Portland’s Black community and the Black community across our country. This month is an opportunity to recognize the lasting contributions of Black leaders, artists, scholars, and activists, while also reflecting on the ongoing work of equity and justice. At Grant, our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging extends well beyond February and is woven into our school culture year-round.
We are proud to highlight student-led groups that help bring this commitment to life, including our Black Student Union (BSU) and Brothers of Color. The BSU provides a space for Black students and allies to build community, celebrate Black identity, and engage in advocacy, leadership, and cultural awareness. Brothers of Color focuses on supporting, empowering, and uplifting students through mentorship, connection, and personal growth. Together, these groups play an essential role in fostering belonging, amplifying student voice, and strengthening our Grant community.
Forecasting Fair
This week at Grant High School was full of meaningful connection and planning for the year ahead. Our Forecasting Fair was a great success, giving students the opportunity to meet teachers, explore course options, and hear directly from peers currently enrolled in the classes they’re considering. Forecasting is an important part of the high school experience—it helps students take ownership of their learning, align courses with their interests and goals, and plan thoughtfully for graduation and post-secondary pathways. It was wonderful to see students asking questions, building confidence, and making informed choices about their academic future here at Grant.

📊SPORTS MARKETING
🏆 CHAMPIONS! 🏆
What an incredible achievement! Our Sports Marketing class has won Sports Career Consulting’s National Sports Marketing Challenge, and it truly came down to the final moments.
Students in Mr. Kabza’s class rose to the occasion in the SCC Fantasy Football Franchise Challenge, tackling six intense challenges to design, brand, and launch a fictional NFL expansion team. Through creativity, strategy, and outstanding teamwork, their team, the OKC Shock, pulled off a thrilling final-round victory over Blacksburg, Virginia, bringing the national championship trophy home to Grant High School.
This win is a powerful reflection of our students’ innovation, collaboration, and commitment to excellence. We couldn’t be more proud. Way to make Grant shine!
The Business Department is thrilled to celebrate sophomore Rona Steelman and freshman Ethan Kelty from the Marketing Department, both were selected as winners of ODOT's Work Zone Safety Billboard Competition!
With over 200 entries statewide, it's a huge honor that two Grant High School designs were chosen, and even cooler that their work will be displayed on billboards across Multnomah County. Their creative messages will be up on real billboards to encourage drivers to slow down and stay alert, helping keep road workers and communities safe. They also will earn a scholarship and be recognized at the Oregon Safety Symposium scheduled for February 18 in Salem.
Rona Steelman
Ethan Kelty
To end the semester, all marketing students pitched marketing plans to launch original footwear concepts, with a complete marketing mix strategy. The presentations were creative, polished, and impressive, and set students up perfectly for their upcoming work in the entrepreneurship class next semester.

STUDENT STORE
Energy Drink Sells - Discontinued
Starting this month, our Grant High School Student Store will no longer be selling energy drinks. High-caffeine beverages can be especially harmful for teenagers, leading to increased heart rate, high blood pressure, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. Studies also show that excessive caffeine can interfere with healthy growth and development in adolescents. By removing these drinks from our school, we are promoting a safer, healthier environment and supporting students in making choices that protect their long-term well-being.

Should any concerns arise, please seek out event workers, administration, or security personnel for help. We appreciate your support in advance.
Attendance and Game Day Eligibility: Important Information for Students
This is a reminder that skipping class or missing assigned detention—especially due to tardies—can affect your ability to attend after-school activities and events.
Any student who skips class or has an unexcused absence on a Game Day will not be allowed to attend athletic contests or games taking place that day. Students must scan their student ID at the entrance to verify eligibility for entry.
Additionally, students who fail to follow school rules or OSAA spectator guidelines at home or away games may lose the privilege of attending future athletic events for the remainder of the school year.
We expect all students to represent Grant High School with pride, respect, and integrity. Your behavior reflects on our entire school community.
We cheer for our athletes, support our coaches, stay off the referees, and respect our opponents. Anyone unable to follow these guidelines may be asked to leave the gym or field.
Light Installation Delayed
We want to update our community that the installation of stadium lights at Grant High School has been delayed and is now expected to occur later this year rather than the originally planned winter/spring timeline. We understand this is disappointing for our student‑athletes and families, and we share that frustration, especially knowing how much evening practices and home games mean to our community. Local news reports note that permitting, contractor availability, and other scheduling challenges have contributed to the delay, and while the project continues to move forward, there isn’t a firm date yet for completion — we will share more information in the coming weeks as we learn more.
As of Fall 2025, Grant's PTA program has ended. If your Fred Meyer Rewards account is linked to support the PTA then it will no longer be active - including any donations. GrantGives has stepped in to help you continue supporting Grant High School through your Fred Meyers Rewards! Visit www.grantgives.com/fredmeyerrewards for a step-by-step guide! And thank you!
