BHS Homecoming 2026
Homecoming Spirit Week Days!
Our Homecoming Week spirit days have been announced. We are encouraging out students to participate and enjoy what will be a positive week for our students. The week's spirit days are provided below:
Tuesday: Superhero Day
Wednesday: Surfer vs. Biker Day
Thursday: Space Out Day (this year's Homecoming Dance theme is "Out of This World")
Friday: Black and Orange Day
Homecoming Tickets
Homecoming will be here before we know it! This year's Homecoming Parade will be on Friday, October 16th starting at 6 pm with the game to follow. The Homecoming Dance will take place at BHS on Saturday, October 17th from 7 pm to 10 pm. Tickets will be available for purchase for 2 weeks prior to the dance (October 5th - 16th) both online (in SBA) and in-person. The ticket price is $35/student this year.
Updated Student Safety/Security Procedure at BHS
Starting this year, if you or your student enters the building after 7:30, you will notice a few minor updates to our building entry procedures designed to keep our students safe and our buildings secure. The process for entry is outlined below.
- Anyone looking to enter the building after 7:30 will be required to use the buzzer and be buzzed into the vestibule area. This is no different than past practice. Students should have their Student ID out and visible in order to gain entry into the vestibule area. They may notice building security staff present to check their ID and greet them upon arrival. While this presence may be a change for the high school, it should be a familiar process for anyone who has entered one of our buildings serving younger grades during the school day.
- Historically, once in the vestibule area, students/adults were able to immediately enter the office area as well as the building through the Main Office since the office door was open/unlocked. This door will now remain locked at all times. As a result, students/parents will need to be buzzed into the Main Office and then will have the ability to enter the building once checked in from there.
- As a reminder, students should have their Student ID out ad visible in order to gain access to the building. Guests looking to enter the actual building via the Main Office should plan to bring their ID as well so that we can use it to check them in/out.
New Work Permit Process
For our students under 18 years of age, the state of Michigan is changing their work permit process and they will no longer be accepting paper copies of work permits. Work permits will now only be accepted via Michigan's online Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP). An informational flyer with a QR code for accessing the portal can be found below.
BHS Tutor List
Each year, the Counseling Department puts together a Tutor List to help our BHS students who may be struggling with their academic course work.
The individuals on this tutoring list have reached out and asked to be included as a resource for our BHS students and their families. Qualifications have been self-reported and it is up to the student/family to find the tutor that makes the most sense for them, arrange any meetings, and manage any necessary payments independent of the school.
A copy of the Tutor List for the 2026-27 school year can be found here.
You will note on the BHS Tutor List, there is also information about free peer tutoring that takes place two days a week each week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have at this point in time.
College App Help Session with Mrs. Caverly - Tuesday, 10/13
Attention Seniors! If you need help with your college applications, Mrs. Caverly is hosting a College App Help Session on Tuesday 10/13 during all lunches in the Collab Lab (D32/34). Stop by during your lunch and come prepared to ask your college app questions!
2026-27 Public University Guide
The 2026–27 Michigan Public Universities Guide to Admissions is now available and is a valuable resource for students and families navigating the college search and application process! This comprehensive guide provides an easy way to compare Michigan's 15 public universities, including admissions requirements, average GPAs and test scores, tuition and housing costs, scholarship opportunities, application deadlines, and campus visit information. Whether your student is actively applying to colleges or just beginning to explore their options, we encourage families to review this resource together and begin conversations about finding the right fit for their future.
Colleges with No/Waived Application Fees this Month!
October is Michigan College Month, and it is a great time for seniors to submit college applications! Many Michigan colleges and universities do not charge an application fee, while several others are waiving their fees for all or part of October. The attached resource includes participating schools, waiver dates, and any required application codes, including opportunities at CMU, EMU, MSU, Wayne State, and others.
Michigan College Month 2026 Fee Waivers Document
Families of college-bound seniors are encouraged to review the list and take advantage of these opportunities to apply while fees are waived!
Make Up PSAT 11/NMSQT Information - Wednesday, October 21st
If a student missed the 11th grade PSAT/NMSQT, we are offering one makeup opportunity on Wednesday, October 21st. If this is something that a student interested in, please have them report to the Media Center no later than 7:30am on that day with their ID, #2 pencil, and a calculator.
College and Career Month at BHS
October is College and Career Month at BHS! This is a great opportunity to let our students know about many of the options that will be available to them after completing their high school experience at BHS. We will also have a number of different things going on over the course of the month. A copy of the College Month Initiatives Calendar can be found here.
BHS Attendance Policy
As always, we will work with you/your student if there are extenuating circumstances, but our goal is to have students in front of their teachers as much as possible as we know it increases the likelihood of their success. The full BHS Attendance Policy is outlined below:
Absences:
Each semester, students will be allowed 9 absences. When the absence is excused, the student will be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests without penalty. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests. Once a student reaches 10 absences (excused or unexcused), he/she may enter into a “loss of credit” status. The student will continue to attend class and work towards academic success. If there are no additional absences, the “loss of credit” status may revert back into course credit with the earned grade. In cases of continued but limited excused absences, the student will have the opportunity to appeal the “loss of credit” status, presenting evidence of extenuating circumstances, and possibly have credit reinstated to their grade level principal.
Please note: Excused absences that WILL NOT count in the (9) day limitation are those for documented medical and court appointments, religious observances, funerals, and those for school business and suspensions.
Per Board Policy 5301, the Building Principal or designee may impose additional consequences for excessive absenteeism, consistent with the student handbook or published grading procedures.
Absentee reports will be run by Administration at progress reports and marking periods throughout the school year. Based on those reports, the following will take place.
*Note: 10 or more absences per semester, student enters a loss of credit status (NC). Every 5 tardies = 1 absence.
** Appeal process goes to the Grade Level Principal for potential credit reinstatement.
Tardies:
Students are allowed 3 tardies per semester without a disciplinary referral. Once a student hits the 4th tardy, they will be sent to their Grade Level Principal for a student conference. The next offense will result in making up time during an after school detention. Multiple offenses will escalate the student discipline. A parent phone call does NOT excuse a tardy.
Career Chats at BHS are Back!
Career Chats give students the opportunity during Advisory to explore different career pathways and hear directly from professionals about their careers, experiences, and advice. These conversations provide students with a chance to learn about a variety of careers and begin thinking about possible pathways for their future.
Please see the Career Chat Calendar 26-27 for scheduled presenters. We are still looking for additional professionals who would be willing to share their career journey with our students. If you know someone who may be interested, please share the opportunity and have them sign up here.
Thank you for your continued support in encouraging students to attend Career Chats and take advantage of these valuable learning opportunities!
For more information, please contact Tanya Clark at clarkt@brightonk12.com.

Upcoming Community Events and Opportunities for Students/Parents
Upcoming Unified Robotics Opportunity
LESA and The STEAM Syndicate (a local educational non-profit organization) are once again
partnering to offer Unified Robotics in Livingston County. Last year’s program was so much fun and we can’t wait to share the program with more Livingston County students. This fantastic program brings together teams of up to six (6) students who are generally approximately 50% students receiving special education services and 50% students not receiving special education services to learn and interact through robotics. The students will work together to build and code a Lego robot to complete a specific task.
Teams will meet one (1) to two (2) times per week for six (6) to eight (8) weeks to complete their build. There will be a single tournament at the end of the season. Last year we ran the first Livingston County Unified Robotics tournament and had an absolute blast! We’ll be playing this game with our neighbors in the county, learning together, and having fun together right here at home!
This program is being offered to Livingston County students free of charge but does require
volunteers to be successful. We are looking for parents, teachers, and community members to
participate with this program as coaches and mentors in addition to interested students. No
experience is necessary to fill this role! We will train everyone who volunteers to help to be
successful in this role.
Please see the flyer below which explains how to register for the program (go to the ‘registration’ tab at www.steamsyndicate.org).
If you have questions, please reach out to info@steamsyndicate.org.
Thank you,
LESA & The STEAM Syndicate

Livingston County Job Shadow Days
The Liv Co FALL Job Shadow Day is coming up November 4–6, 2026. We now have more than 215 job-shadow opportunities—and that number is still growing! We continue to hear great stories from students who have used Job Shadow Day to confirm a career pathway, make a meaningful connection with an employer, or even land a job.
Registration opens October 14 at 6:00 p.m. As you know, opportunities are available on a first-come, first-served basis across the county, so early communication is important. We want students to have the best possible chance of securing the experience they are hoping for!
Job Shadow Day Description:
BHS, in partnership with Livingston ESA’s Career Development Department, has planned a countywide, bi-annual event, Liv Co Job Shadow Day, on Wednesday, November 4 - Friday, November 6, 2026. This is a one day activity designed to show Juniors and Seniors a bit about what a day in the life of different careers is like. There are many diverse opportunities for students to shadow, ranging from aircraft mechanics to veterinarians to HVAC technicians.
Sign up for students opens on October 14th at 6pm. Students can register and sign up on the same day! Registration involves a parent signature to confirm students' permission to participate. Students can preview the website ahead of time to see what Job Shadow Opportunities are available at the Livingston Career Hub.
Please note that career availability is on a first come, first served basis, so it would be a good idea to have a list of top five choices. Some careers require extra paperwork, so please check that out ahead of time. Extra forms are attached to the Job Shadow Profile. All extra forms are due to the employer via email by October 26th, or the job shadow will be canceled. The last day to sign up for Job Shadows for students is October 26th, 2026.
How Students & Families Can Prepare:
Discuss Options: Have a conversation this weekend about career fields, industries, or job roles that spark your interest.
Register Early: Registration opens Wednesday, Oct. 14th on the Livingston Career Hub. Popular placements fill up quickly, so don't wait!
Complete Prerequisites: Make sure all required permission slips and documentation are submitted by the posted deadlines.
Registration & Support:
Need help signing up? Check out the Student Registration and Sign up for step-by-step instructions.

Shadow Day gives students in grades 9–12 a firsthand look at college life at U-M. Throughout the day, participants will:
Attend a sample class and experience a college classroom
Shadow a current U-M student during lunch, study time, and campus activities
Ask questions about academics, student life, and the transition to college
Learn about extracurricular activities and student organizations at U-M
It’s a personalized and interactive way for students to explore college life, learn more about U-M, and meet current students and fellow participants.
