From the Principal

Happy New Year, Skyline families!

I hope your winter break was filled with rest, joy, and time with the people who matter most. As we welcome 2026, our halls are buzzing with energy, curiosity, and that fresh-start feeling that January always brings. This is one of my favorite times of the year—students return ready to learn, ready to lead, and ready to take on new challenges with confidence.

This month, we will continue to build on our Leader in Me focus as students practice Habit 4: Think Win-Win—learning how to work with others in ways that allow everyone to succeed. You may hear your child talking about sharing ideas, taking turns, listening to others’ perspectives, or solving problems in a fair and respectful way. These skills support strong relationships and positive teamwork at school and translate beautifully to home. We are grateful for the ways you reinforce cooperation, empathy, and problem-solving with your children.

January also brings opportunities to reset routines, reestablish expectations, and reconnect as a community. Thank you for partnering with us, encouraging your child, and working side-by-side with Skyline staff to make this school such a special place for students to grow, learn, and lead.

Here’s to a wonderful month of learning, leadership, and fresh beginnings. I look forward to all we will accomplish together in 2026!

Warmly,
Erik Olson, Principal

Habit 4 teaches students that everyone can succeed. Think Win-Win means finding solutions that work for all people, not just one. At school, students practice this habit by sharing, taking turns, listening to others’ ideas, and working through conflicts respectfully. When children learn to think Win-Win, they build empathy, strengthen relationships, and develop problem-solving skills that help them collaborate and lead with kindness—both in the classroom and beyond.

Try It at Home: Think Win-Win

When a disagreement comes up at home, pause and ask: “How can we solve this so everyone feels good about the outcome?” Encourage your child to share their ideas, listen to others, and work together to find a solution. Practicing Win-Win thinking at home helps children build empathy, communication skills, and confidence in solving problems respectfully.

Facts About Bullying for Elementary Students

What is Bullying?

· Bullying is when someone is being mean or hurtful to another person who has a hard time defending him/herself.

· Bullying usually happens over and over

· Bullying can be:

1. Physical acts that hurt people such as hitting, kicking, punching or shoving.

2. Verbal acts that hurt people such as calling people names.

3. Acts that are indirect but still hurt people. Examples are ganging up on someone, excluding, spreading rumors or gossiping.

4. Cyberbullying (using computers or cell phones to post pictures or rumors to cause harm)

· Bullying is NOT where two people have a disagreement or misunderstanding. It is different from playful teasing where both people see it as fun.

What Do Bullies Do?

· They may say mean things such as calling others a wimp or loser.

· They may lack empathy for others.

· They may have a strong need to get their own way.

· They are easily angered and use their power to hurt others.

· They may refuse to admit that they bullied or blame others.

What about Children who are Bullied?

· Children can be bullied for anything that makes them see as different or easily hurt. They may be different in how they look or think. They may be different in how they act or practice their religion.

· Children who are bullied are more likely to become sad and nervous.

· They may think that they are different, powerless or alone.

· They may not want to go to school or be around other children.

· They may have headaches or stomach problems.

· Sometimes students who are bullied will bully others.

How to Prevent it from Happening

· Treat others with respect – use kind words.

· Think before you speak, type or text.

· If you are feeling angry and want to be mean, think about something else, talk to a friend or adult, write down how you feel.

· If you have hurt someone else, be responsible and try to make up for it.

Help yourself if it is happening to YOU

· Report it to a trusted adult

· Refuse it; stand up straight, look the person in the eye and say in a strong and respectful voice “stop it, that’s bullying”

· Stay close to adults and trusted friends

Help Others if it is Happening to Them – Be a Upstander!

· Don’t join in….speak up if it is safe to do so.

· Report the bullying to an adult

· Include the person being bullied into your group--
