We’re looking forward to cheering on our Chess team tomorrow at the Auckland Central Regionals, which is always an intense but enjoyable learning experience for the participants. This is an opportunity for the children to put their skills to the test in a highly strategic battle against skilled players, which I know will be a great day for them all.

Looking ahead, our performances this term are also starting to take shape, with excitement building for the Junior Showcase (always a highlight!), which will be followed by a no doubt equally fabulous Y3/4 Production later in the term.

To a totally different area of the curriculum, Y6 parents should have received information regarding our upcoming Puberty Talks, which is an area parents are often interested to learn more about in terms of content and what is actually covered.

Put simply, Puberty Talks fit into the Health strand of the Curriculum (which schools are required to cover), although there is a specific opt-out for parents who do not wish their child to take part.

The focus of the actual talks in Year 6 is on age-appropriate personal care, hygiene, physical changes, emotional development, respect for others and personal safety. We employ a highly experienced external provider for these talks, who has in-depth knowledge and experience of working with students at Primary year levels in this area.

Just to be clear, while the children are given an opportunity to raise questions, which are always treated with sensitivity, sexuality and complex issues such as gender identity are not covered as part of the programme, so any questions touching on these topics would usually be acknowledged and gently referred back as things to ask mum and/or dad about.

As you'd expect, it takes a fine balance to ensure that children feel confident, comfortable and equipped with the age-appropriate knowledge they need during a time of significant personal and physical change, so this is an area of the children's learning that we always approach with appropriate care and sensitivity.

Cultural Festival Thank You – What a Success!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make our Cultural Festival such a vibrant and memorable event! It was a wonderful celebration of the rich diversity in our school and wider community, and we’re thrilled to share that together we raised an incredible $7,000!

We are deeply grateful to our generous sponsors, Henderson Reeves and Harcourts Mt Eden, whose support made this event possible.

A huge thank you also goes out to the amazing volunteers — parents, whānau, teachers, the skids team and community members — who gave their time, energy, and talents so generously. Whether you helped with food stalls, performances, decorations, set-up, clean-up, or anything in between, you were an essential part of the day’s success.

It truly was a case of he waka eke noa – we’re all in this together. Thank you for being part of such a special day!

A very special thank you to Melanie Woollard and her wonderful whānau for organising the Clothing Sale at the Cultural Festival. Through her initiative, energy, and care, Mel raised an incredible $950 for the PTA — an amazing effort! Mel truly encapsulated the spirit of manaakitanga — showing generosity, hospitality, and kindness to our school community. Her mahi made a real difference, and we’re so grateful for her contribution. Thank you, Mel, for going above and beyond!

Upcoming planned rail closures

Getting ready for CRL’s opening in 2026 requires a complete upgrade of Auckland’s rail network, in addition to fitting out the new stations, and testing and commissioning of new systems.

Throughout late-July and August, there will be some weekend closures that will impact the Southern Line and the Western Line.

Following this closure, during the September school holidays there will be temporary changes to the timetables on most lines and on the Southern Line, buses will replace trains between Puhinui and Pukekohe Stations.

Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July

Western Line: full closure

Southern Line: partially closed between Waitemata (Britomart) and Newmarket

Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August

Western Line: partially closed between Waitemata (Britomart) and Newmarket and New Lynn and Swanson

Southern Line: partially closed between Waitemata (Britomart) and Newmarket

Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August

Western Line: partially closed between Waitemata (Britomart) and Newmarket and New Lynn and Swanson

Southern Line: partially closed between Waitemata (Britomart) and Newmarket

Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August

Western Line: trains are running at a reduced frequency between Swanson and Henderson station.

Thank you for your patience as we get ready for the faster, more frequent trains the City Rail Link will bring.
