Mrs. Michels Weekly Updates
Let's make it a great week!
Weekly Updates! October 19-30th
Hello Hamilton Families,
This fall weather just keeps getting more beautiful! It is definitely my favorite time of year! Thank you to all the families who donated to the Tat The Teacher day! We had a lot of fun with it and the students loved seeing us wear the tattoos they picked out for us.
Halloween Parade
We are still in need of candy for our Halloween parade. If you are able to donate some we would really appreciate it!
Toys at School
Please help your child to remember to leave toys and pokemon cards at home. We cannot be responsible for lost or damaged items or when students give away or trade items.
Cell Phone/Electronics Policy
Michigan law and Wayne-Westland Community Schools Board Policy now require students to keep personal wireless devices put away during instructional time. This change aims to reduce distractions, increase learning, and create a classroom environment where students can focus on their education and connect with their teachers and classmates.
What Devices Are Covered? The policy applies to personal electronic devices, including:
● Cell phones and smartphones
● Smartwatches
● Smart glasses
● Tablets and personal computers
● Earbuds and headphones
● Other internet-capable wireless devices All students must keep these devices out of sight and put away during class.
Devices may not be used or visible in classrooms, restrooms, or locker rooms.
If a student has their device out at school we may require a parent pick up if it happens more than once.
Birthday treats at school
Please remember if you are bringing a birthday treat for your child to share at school to reach out to the teacher ahead of time to ensure there are no other students celebrating that day. We also ask that treats be individually wrapped just in case a student prefers to take it home to eat or there are leftovers that have to be taken back home. You can also send in non-edible items like pencils, erasers, tattoos or small items if you want to avoid a food item.
Safety Protocols
We continue to have a number of people ignoring traffic rules and signs and putting students at risk.
You may not park or stop in the bus loop or next to the bus in the street. You may not park your car in front of the school along the curb and get out of your car, you must pull into a parking space if you are getting out of your car. Students may not walk between the buses to get to your car, this is simply too dangerous. You may not pick. your child up out of the bus line as we are walking they to the bus. If you do not want your child on the bus, call the office and we will bring the student to the main office for pick up.
Please understand that these rules are in place for the safety of our students and I thank you in advance for your support with this.
Positive Behavior Interventions & Support -P.B.I.S
Last week we had our STAR assembly where we recognized students for their positive behavior choices. I am happy to share that we had 114 students with perfect attendance! Those students were given a certificate and a charm for their PBIS necklaces. Students were also recognized for having the highest number of spotlight behavior points in their class and for getting Positive Office Referrals.
We introduced our next spotlight behavior which is "Self Direct". Students who are self-directed set goals for who they want to be and what they want to do, then they take the action steps to achieve that goal. What we are looking for at school is students who do their personal best, complete work and tasks without reminders, take responsibility for their own actions and do the right thing even when others around them do not. When teachers notice this behavior students earn spotlight behavior points! Keep an eye on Dojo for your child’s points!

Volunteers
Chaperone and Volunteer Background (ICHAT) Request- Allow 2 weeks for processing
The Board encourages the use of volunteers to support the School District. Because the safety of the School District´s students is of paramount importance, every individual volunteer is required to undergo a criminal background check through the Michigan State Police Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT) before they are permitted to volunteer, regardless of whether or not the volunteer will work directly with students. ICHAT criminal background checks will be performed annually for each volunteer.
When the background check is complete, a list of approved chaperones and volunteers will be shared with our school secretaries / principals / assistant principals on a "need to know" basis. The ICHATS will be kept on file for the current school year.
Parents may elect not to be screened. Please note that if you are not screened you will not be able to chaperone or drive any children other than your own on field trips.
Depending on the volume of ICHAT requests, it may take up to 10 days to screen the requests.
If you have any questions, please contact Human Resource at 734-419-2025.
Thank you for your continued support of our children here at Wayne-Westland Community Schools.

Transportation
For students who ride the bus, please make sure they are at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to the assigned time as the routes can run early from time to time. The same is true at the end of the day, please be at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to drop off just incase they are early. Keep in mind the first month of school the route times vary quite a bit. Having the Here comes the bus app helps you to know exactly where the bus is.
All Young 5's and Kindergarten students must be met by an adult at the bus before they will be let off the bus. If you want your child to be released to an older sibling or family member you can fill out a form in the office to give to the driver.
Wayne-Westland Community Schools has partnered with Here Comes the Bus to offer families an app that will help avoid students and parents from waiting too long for the bus. Here Comes the Bus allows parents to see where their child’s bus is along the route and when it will be at their bus stop.
Wondering where the bus is? Now you’ll know.

Corewell Clinic at Adams Middle School
The Corewell School Based Health Clinic at Adams Middle School is a great resource available to children ages 3 to 21 that live or attend school in Wayne/Westland. They provide medical services including: sports physicals, well child exams, school and childhood vaccines, hearing and vision screenings, sick visits, as well as mental health counseling. The clinic accepts all insurances, but no one is ever turned away for the inability to pay. They also have staff trained to assist families apply for medicaid. They are a great option if your student needs back to school vaccines or sports physicals and can't get into their PCP office, have no insurance, or can't pay a copayment. Appointments are highly recommended. They are open 5 days a week and hours vary. Call 734-728-2423 to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions.
