Important Resources for Families Important Resources for Families

Supporting Our Families: Food Resources and Schoolwide Food Drive

Dear OVMS Family,

I want to share important information that affects many of our families. As Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding is scheduled to end on November 1, food benefits will be reduced for thousands of families across Los Angeles and may leave many facing difficult circumstances.

Please know that this change DOES NOT IMPACT school meals.

Our school will CONTINUE to serve three nutritious meals each day — breakfast, lunch, and supper — to all students, at NO cost.

In addition, Los Angeles Unified’s Supper Program is available for all children ages 1–18, including community members who are not enrolled in our schools. The program operates at school dismissal, Monday through Friday at most schools, INCLUDING OLIVE VISTA MS ensuring that every child has access to a healthy meal. Visit lausd.org/foodhelp for Supper locations. The meal is served at dismissal for 30 minutes and must be eaten on campus.

To support our community during this challenging time, we are also launching a schoolwide Food Drive to help replenish supplies at our local food banks and community pantries. Together, we can make a real difference for families right here in our neighborhood.

We are collecting non-perishable food items such as:

● Canned fruits, vegetables, and soups

● Rice, beans, and pasta

● Peanut butter, cereal, and shelf-stable milk

Donations can be dropped off in the collection bins located at the attendance office all day, or at the Borden Street gate at drop off and pick up each day.

Every item you give will help a family facing food insecurity this season.

If your family could use additional assistance, please visit these community resources for free food and support:

● YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles: https://ymcala.org/foodprograms

● Los Angeles Regional Food Bank: https://lafoodbank.org/find-food/pantry-locator/

● LA County Parks and Recreation – Parks After Dark Meal Program: https://parks.lacounty.gov/parks-after-dark/

Our school community is strongest when we care for one another. If you or someone you know needs help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office at 818-833-3923 or visit lausd.org/foodhelp for more information. We’re here to support you.

Thank you, as always, for your kindness, generosity, and partnership. When we come together, we show our students what compassion and community truly mean.

Updated: We Are One

The safety and wellbeing of every student remains our highest priority. In light of the recent Supreme Court decision lifting restrictions on immigration enforcement actions in the Los Angeles area, we want to reaffirm: every student is welcome and safe in our schools, regardless of immigration status.

District policy is clear – immigration enforcement agents are not allowed on our campus without proper legal authorization. All staff are trained to follow strict protocols to protect student privacy and maintain safe learning environments.

We are also working closely with city leaders and community partners to strengthen safety measures, ensure clear communication, and respond quickly if enforcement activity occurs near schools.

Resources are available at www.lausd.org/weareone, including Know Your Rights materials, legal referrals, and mental health resources. Families with any concerns are encouraged to contact their school administrator or call our Family Hotline directly at (213) 443-1300.

Los Angeles Unified stands united in protecting our students and families. Together, we will continue to uphold the values of equity, inclusion, and respect that define our school communities.

Students will be issued a pouch to store their phones starting on the first day of school. All families have the option of leaving the phone at home. GETTING TO SCHOOL SAFELY!

As we kick off the new school year, I want to take a moment to encourage everyone to stay mindful of traffic safety whether walking, biking, or driving to campus. Please take a moment to review the attached August Traffic Safety Tips, which offer helpful reminders to ensure everyone gets to and from school safely.

In particular, I urge extra caution when traveling through the area near {Insert Intersection Cross Streets}. This intersection tends to be especially busy during drop-off and pick-up times, so let’s stay alert and considerate of one another.

Wishing you all a safe and successful start to the school year!
